I took this picture for my “selective focus” assignment. (Selective Focus-Using focus to direct attention to a certain area of a scene. Commonly used with narrow depth of field – just the subject will be in focus and areas closer to and further from the subject will be blurred).

One of the critiques I got on this photo was to have placed the tooth so it was in front of my daughter’s dark hair. This would make the tooth stand out even more! I thought it was a great tip and so will make a note to do that in the future.

I looked here to get some tips for how to take this picture of the strawberry for a “Motion” assignment.

This picture was to fill an assignment that was an “extremely shallow depth of field“.

Here are some tips for how to take pictures with a shallow depth of field.

My husband keeps trying to give me photography lessons. I say "Why, when you can just take them for me?!" But he's not always around so maybe I should learn. Thanks for the links!

Love the "Motion" assignment photo, Bravo!! I also must ask, how many times did you take that picture?

Why of course the strawberry pic only took 1 take to capture! HeHe! Yeah right! That was hard. Getting the strawberry in focus was tough! I really took about 100 shots before I got a good one of the strawberry in focus. The timing of when to drop and take the picture was difficult too. But I learned alot.

LOVE those Amy! – I have to ask – what lens did you use for these? (I love when some great photog mom's will add lens, f-stop, ISO, Shutter speed under their pics!) you say you use your 55-200 alot – I hardly ever use mine and I'm trying to figure out why? – I know part of the reason is I often feel like I'm too close to use that lens – I have to back up when I use it – I'm also thinking of getting a prime lens – do you have one? the 50mm doesn't auto focus with the D40 – the camera shop suggested the new 35mm to me, it does AF.
