Boo!

I was browsing my local Thrift Store recently and found some plates and a serving platter that was perfect for what I had in mind.

Photobucket

So I took three plates at $.50 a pop and turned them into a fun Halloween display in my kitchen and temporarily replaced them in my plate rack.

Photobucket

As for the platter I found, I decided to transform it into something similar to use for my Halloween decor in our living room. (I shared this project over at Mary Janes & Galoshes last week).

Photobucket

However, the platter was not really my “style”. So, thinking I could remove the decorations fairly easy I snatched this white platter up for a total of .75 cents…Yep…pretty cheap right?

Photobucket

Then I took some 150 grit sand paper and lightly sanded the images off of the platter. I was so pleased with how easily the images came right off.

Photobucket

I was worried that the finish of the platter would be scratched, but to my suprise there was very little roughness.

Photobucket

If you turned the platter to a certain angle you could see that the sheen was a bit duller, but a little glaze or varnish dabbed onto the platter cleared that right up. Yay!

Photobucket

Then I simply took my Silhouette machine and cut out some BOO letters in black vinyl. Super easy! If you don’t have acces to vinyl you could simply cut out some black letters on paper and then Mod Podge them right onto the plate. If you go the Mod Podge route, I would strictly use the platter for decoration. With the vinyl lettering you can even serve Halloween treats out of your platter when company comes over.

Photobucket

The fun thing is that it would be so easy to customize this platter for each new Holiday using the words…JOY, XOX, etc. This is a super easy and inexpensive way to decorate for any holiday!

    Amy, I can't wait to read you every day on my Google Reader; today, I just had to tell you how much you inspire me. Thanks for the creative (and inexpensive) ideas! You are one of my absolute favorite bloggers!

    I am considering purchasing either a Silhouette or a Cricut–I'd love to know how you chose! (I really value your opinion because I know you use the heck out of yours!).

    Thanks,
    Kristi :)

    I am really going to have to save up for on of those Silhouettes. I LOVE all the things you can do with them. I just wish they were a tiny bit less expensive…

    Great ideas. Thanks for sharing. My question is … how do you live w/ jars of M&M's on your counter!!! Those would be gone in an instant at my house.

    Uh oh. You're going to give me an inferiority complex again… :) :) Cute ideas!!!

    Simple and very cute. Dang it, another project I don't have a handy machine to help me create!

    That is so cute! Great idea of changing out letters for the holidays too.

    Now you need to scout out some red plates so you can do "JOY" for Christmas! Maybe brown ones that you could do "We Give Thanks" for Thanksgiving (cut vinyl with your silhouette machine…so many options! Thanks for sharing!

    cute stuff. I agree with the other comments – our thrift stores are quite expensive compared to DI and a jar of M&M's wouldn't last an hour in my house.

    I love that you used sand paper to get those snowmen off! I have never tried that before. What a great idea. I've seen stuff like that at GW that I usually pass up. Not any more! :0) Thanks!

    @Beth–Thanks!

    @Lynn–Oh! You are so sweet! That really made my day to hear that. Love your blog too!

    @MommyGirl–I love my Silhouette. I have never had a cricut so I can't really compare the two. I do like that I don't have to buy separate cartridges for the Silhouette like the Cricut. I understand they are pretty expensive. Any one else have any input?

    @Suzanne–I hear you! Maybe a Christmas present for yourself?!

    @KristenDuke–That is too bad! Ours is usually priced fairly well. But it gets pretty picked over fast.

    @3includingme–Thanks!

    @Jocelyn–Thanks so much!

    @TheExhaustedRuler–HaHa! They are very tempting. They are my daughter's big girl treats for potty training. So the kids know not to touch them. Although I have been known to sneak one or two on occasion :). She rarely asks for one anymore so they just sit there.

    @Heather–No! I hope not! Not my intention at all. :)

    @Sandra–Just cut out some paper and Mod Podge it on there. No one will be the wiser!

    @Flamenco–Thanks! I know…fun to switch out!

    @Kate–I know! Fun! I have that written on my thrift store shopping list.

    @Liesel–That too bad. Garage and yard sales are usually inexpensive to find things like plates and platters at. Maybe you could find some there.

    @Cara–Yeah for mom's who share!

    @Megan–Me too!

    @Teresa–Thanks so much!

    @Traci–I was surprised it worked so well too! Thanks for your sweet comment!

    Hi, recently found your blog and I love it! So creative! I have a silhouette too and I'm starting to experiment with it. Did you use the vinyl from Silhouette or from somewhere else? Can you wash the platter and the vinyl won't come off?

    I was looking into buying some vinyl from Expressions Vinyl (Oracle 631) but it does say it is not permanent and will come off if you wash it.
