I am really excited about today’s post! Still working with bad cell phone pictures…bear with me. My camera finally arrived and I am excited to start learning it. The bad pictures are killing me! First world problems. Anyways…winters are really dry here and I am loving this amazing Whipped Body Butter recipe I have been playing around with.
I finally got the right combination to make this smooth and creamy body butter. It was a lot of fun experimenting and was definitely out of my comfort zone. I did a bit of research first and found a lot of the same basic recipes but wanted to incorporate coconut oil. Coconut oil is such a great oil for your skin and is the main oil I have to use due to my food allergies.
Coconut and Vanilla Whipped Body Butter Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup Cocoa Butter, grated
1/4 cup Coconut Oil
1/4 tsp. Vanilla
1/2 Cup Almond Oil
Instructions:
1. Melt the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a double boiler or in bowl placed in a saucepan of boiling water.
2. When melted completely, add almond oil and vanilla.
3. Chill in the refrigerator or freezer until slightly hardened (about 20-30 minutes)
4. Whip with your hand mixer until smooth and creamy
5. Place into a container.
6. Makes about 1 cup
7. It will harden a bit more due to the coconut oil. Simply scoop some out and it will melt in your hand so that you can rub it into your skin.
It makes your skin feel so smooth and soft and it smells so yummy! My husband who usually has nothing to do with my sugar scrubs uses this now on his hands at night! But let’s just keep that between us…mmmkay?!

Thank you Jen! xo
Hey,i was wondering when to add vanilla…is it important? Becouse you have it in ingredients but can’t find it in instructions. :) Anyway i can’t wait to give this a try :) Thanks :)
Oh! I left that out. I just added it to the instructions. You simply add it in with the almond oil.
Is it just regular cooking vanilla?
Yes.
What a great idea Amy! This sounds wonderful!
Thank you so much Debra! I hope you enjoy it if your try it.
Where do you get your jars and labels from?
I made the labels and shared them with you. The containers are from the craft store just round plastic containers.
Wow – look at that huge scrub list! Can’t wait to try out this body butter.
ha! Yes…I have a problem!
I bet this smells crazy good! Pinning :)
I make my own too! I live in this stuff and I can’t imagine how badly you all need it in Utah!
I am LOVING it! And yes…we do need it badly!
Do you have to use the solid cocoa butter and grate it or can you use the cocoa butter lotion base?
You know…I am not sure. I used the solid cocoa butter. I imagine it would work but you might have to play with the ration of coconut oil and almond oil to make sure it comes out with a good consistency. You can always try a really small batch by cutting everything in half.
Thank you! where is the best place to get the butter? How about Shea butter, will it work the same
Try a baking or candy making supply store or online through Amazon. I am not sure about Shea butter, honestly. You could try it. If it has the same consistency it could work.
Are these the Avery 2.5″ labels? I’m trying to purchase some labels so I can start printing :)
No. I just print them on white paper (or card stock) and then punch them out and glue them on with a glue stick. They are 3 inch labels.
This is a very good site for labels, they are very nice and the cost is great compaed to avery. http://www.sheet-labels.com/labels/SL228
Do you have a scrub in this same scent? My son tried my scrub & thinks it will help his hands & I think this would be a better smell for a guy. lol Thanks, love all of your idea’s you are very talented & thanks for sharing with us.
I don’t…but all you need to do to create your own is to follow another scrub recipe (like the one your son tried if you used one of my recipes) and substitute the different ingredients. Use a coconut oil and then add some vanilla instead of the other essential oil. Should work like a charm.
Where do you find the cocoa butter. I remember using it as a teenager but that was years ago.
Try a baking or candy making supply store or online through Amazon.
Where do you purchase your cocoa butter?
I bought mine from Orson Gygi, but have also seen it online at Amazon. You could also find it in a specialty baking or candy making store.
I love this site and this recipe! This will be my first try at making something like this and I am also wondering if you recommend a certain cocoa butter and where you get it and the coconut oil too. Thanks!
This was my first time using cocoa butter so I just picked some up at a local store that was recommended by one of the employees. The coconut oil is a large bottle that I buy from COSTCO.
what happened to your camera? what is your new one??
It died. It won’t focus very well. It has been used and abused for several years ;(
This looks like a great recipe to try – thanks! Would love to know what fonts you used on the label (or if you have a post that has your fav fonts). Love how it looks!
I love the idea of making gifts instead of buying them. I used you candy cane sugar scrub last week for a friends birthday gift and it worked out great. I can’t wait to try this idea. I can already feel how good it will make my hands feel. I was looking for a small gift for the nurses I work with and dry hands are a big problem when you wash your hands or use hand sanitizer as often as we do. they will think I am a great manager when they get this. Thanks for the great idea.
Is the vanilla, vanilla extract or essential oil?
Ah ha!! I was wondering what type of vanilla to use too? Seemed a daft question but I’m a beginner!!
I wondered as well!
Vanilla? extract, oil? Inquiring minds want to know!
I used extract!
So I made this yesterday and while I love the consistency and feel of it, it just smells weird! Ever since I bought my Cocoa Butter from online, it’s just smelled weird to me. Did I get a bad batch or does it normally have a funky scent to it? I added many drops of different oils and they are completely masked by the weird cocoa butter smell. Any tips or recommendations on where to get normal smelling cocoa butter? =)
I should add that my cocoa butter is hard….very hard. Not sure if that’s how it’s supposed to be. Kind of like a big wax chunk that I had to grate. It melted fine, just smelled weird!
Mine is hard but not terribly hard. It has a definite smell to it but not a weird smell. I wonder if the one you got was a bit spoiled or rancid. It should have a cocoa smell. The essential oils should blend with the cocoa smell…think mint chocolate or orange chocolate… I buy mine from a baking supply store. Maybe you could check there and compare to see if yours was bad. Sorry to hear that. You can switch to a shea butter or a mango butter if you can find them and like that smell better.
I made this today and it looks oily vs white and whipped. What did I do wrong? I followed the directions and used exact amounts?
Hi there. Simply needed to request a quick dilemma. I am just putting together my very own blog site and
would want to learn exactly where you have the theme?
Was the idea cost-free? Or maybe has been the item paid out?
I cannot appear to come across anything as well
as that one, so with luck , you are able to let me understand.
Cheers. PS, my personal apologies. The english language isn’t my very first language.
This sounds sinfully wonderful ;-) Now, to find out where I can get the cocoa butter and oils here in the Netherlands…
Wow!!! Can’t wait to try this recipe.
It makes one cup? But we add a cup of cocoa butter plus other ingredients…
You will melt it down so yes…it makes about a cup.
will this lotion leave a residue? because i have used coconut oil on my hair and skin and i always have to wash it out or off so i want have that oil feeling on my skin. is it like regular lotion?
Hi, I was wondering can you use extra virgine olive oil instead of the almond oil?
Yes…it should work fine. It does have a darker yellow color and a stronger smell so it may be a little overpowering of the scent.
Howdy!
I just wanted to stop by and say THANK YOU! I used this recipe for Christmas as gifts to my kids teachers. I got a personal phone call as well as a message on Facebook telling me how much they loved this!
I love it myself! When I made it I noticed it didn’t have a strong enough coconut smell for me so I added in 1/4 tsp of coconut extract and wow did it make it pop! Smells so good together! I’ll be making this again and varying it up to use with different scents.
Thank you again! Have a wonderful New Year!
I made this last week and it’s amazing! Mine made a lot and used jojoba oil. I smell like a chocolate bar! Was wondering what the shelf life is too as I think most home made lotions go bad after awhile. About how long does this one last?
Mine lasted about 3 months. Be sure to use clean hands when scooping it out as it does not have preservatives. I bet it smells amazing!!
Can I use kokum butter in place of cocoa butter?
I am not sure! I have not heard of kokum butter before! Sorry!
can I add vanilla essential oil instead of the typical cooking vanilla?
Yes! That would be a great addition!
As I was making this body butter I noticed that it didn’t really smell like yummy vanilla. So, I added about half of my bottle of cooking vanilla. But, once I was finished and put on the butter it still smelled like nothing, more like the natural Shea butter. How do I get the butter to smell yummy? Do I need different vanilla? Can you recommend one that will smell delicious when I apply it ? Also, is it ok that I apply this amount of cooking vanilla to my skin. Thank you for all your help.
Hi, I made this body butter exactly as described in the directions, however mine did not come out creamy. Is it supposed to be oily? Mine craft out very oily. Did I do something wrong? Please help, would like to give this as a gift. Thank you.
I LOVE your website. I always feel inspired when I see your new creations.
My son is allergic to all nuts. What type of oil can I substitute in place of the Almond Oil?
Can you help? I was making a double batch for gifts and got some water in it from the double boiler. I’d hate to waste so much. Can I still use this or is there a way to get the water out?
Question, mine turned out completely oily…. Followed recipe to a T. Not sure what happened but can you think of anything I can addin to lessen the oiliness?
Hi Amy,
Mine turned out just fine but it doesn’t stay whipped. It turns back into a semi-hard stage. Maybe it is getting too cold? I keep it under my bathroom sink.
Hmmm…that could possibly be the problem. Not sure why it is turning back into the hard stage.
hi what size jar did you use to store your cream? 4oz?
I do not care for coconut fragrance. In fact, I really don’t care for many scents unless I put it in.
Can you please tell me which main ingredients I can use to make the main butter and then I can add my own fragrances? I am new to your site. Very impressed!
You could substitute the Cocoa Butter for Shea Butter. All ingredients are needed to make the body butter.
Whipped Body Butter Labels are no longer avail ?
i cannot find them
thanks
Why is it hardening. I can chip away at it but it’s very crumbly and hard. It melts in my hands and I can spread it that way but it’s very annoying. I thought it was supposed to be creamy not hard crumbs. Did I not whip it enough or whip it too much?
Nathalia- Not sure. Hmmm…what kind of coconut oil did you use?
Hello, you just said add vanilla,is it vanilla oil, vanilla extract or what vanilla exactly?
Debbie- Vanilla Extract is what I used. Thank You! You can find it here: http://amzn.to/1qwh5eo
