DIY Spring Paper Flowers

We have had so much snow this Spring that I decided to make my own flowers to help brighten up the cold and gloominess.  These are super easy and don’t take very long to make and really brighten up the room they are in.  They also can be used in a lot of different ways.  I thought they would be fun as cupcake toppers or as a decoration for a wrapped gift.  Or use the same concept of the flowers without the sticks and string them up on a string {or a string of lights} to make a fun springy garland for your mantle or in your daughter’s room!

Here is how I made them.  You will need the following supplies:

I used wooden beads that measured 12 mm.  This brand and size ended up fitting onto the end of a sucker stick PERFECTLY!  First I cut out some scrapbook paper {BoBunny Dots in various colors}, 2 flowers in each color.  Each flower has a front and a back paper to hide the stick in between them.

Cut a hole out of the middle of EACH flower {I have only shown 1 cut}.  The hold needs to be just big enough to fit around the bead…so about 12 mm.  I also made a few tiny slits around the inside circle so that it would slide over the bead and fit nicely without ripping.  Be really careful on this part as the paper rips pretty easily if pushed too hard.

Then I took this acrylic paint in the color Crocus Yellow and painted several of the beads and then let them dry.

Slide a stick into the end of the bead and then slide the paper over the flower and center it on the bead.  Use a thin line of hot glue around the back of the flower so that the flower stays in place.

Add the second flower so that both of the right ends of the scrapbook paper are facing outward and the stick is in the middle.  Use a small bit of the glue on the back of the flower to hold the two flowers together.

To prettify the sticks I cut a VERY thin straight piece of green paper and put a thin line of glue down on side of it and then twist the paper around the stick so that it is in a spiral all the way down.  Gently hold the strip in place to the glue firms up.  I just used a regular white Elmer’s School Glue.

Then I cut a chunk of grass out of my flower bed that needed to come out anyway and placed it in a cute bucket I have had laying around.  If you don’t want to cut up your grass, you can grow your own wheat grass yourself.  I have actually done that on one of my older posts which can be found here.

That’s it!  Pretty easy right?  And it was a fun and simple way to bring some spring and color inside.  It is sitting in my kitchen windowsill.  The grass should continue to grow if you are careful to keep a bit of dirt and the roots of your cut grass intact.  You will just need to add a few drops of water to keep your grass green and healthy indoors.  You may also need to trim the grass which is easy to do with a pair of scissors!  A fun activity that my kids get a kick out of doing!

What would you use these Paper Spring Flowers for?

Easter Treats–Bunny and Duck Cookie Pops

Easter is coming and I can hardly believe it!  Where does the time go?  And with each holiday I have had fun challenging myself to come up with a fun holiday related “treat on a stick”!  For Easter I created some bunny and duck pops.

They are pretty simple to make.  You will need some Oreo Cakesters and white chocolate, Almond Bark or CandiQuik.  I used Vanilla CandiQuik.

Stick a sucker stick into the bottom of the Oreo Cakester so that it goes up into the middle between the two cake layers.  Then dip the entire Oreo into the melted CandiQuik.  Cover the entire Oreo and the bottom of the stick.  This will harden and hold the Oreo firmly on the stick.

To make the bunny ears I took two swedish fish and stuck them into the top of the bunny head before the CandiQuik had hardened.  Then I drizzled the CandiQuik over the ears and covered them completely.

Then I set the cookie down on some parchment paper.  Quickly add two mini chocolate chips for the eyes and a jelly bean for the nose.  I had some heart sprinkles left over from Valentine’s day that I used for the bunny’s cheeks.

For the ears, I took some pink sugar {easy to make—take regular granulated sugar and add a drop of red food coloring and mix together} and sprinkled it on the ears.  Then I took some more CandiQuik and drizzled it on the edges of the ears to make an outline around the sugar.  This made it so the sugar was just on the “inside” of the bunny’s ear.

Then let it dry.

To make the ducks.  I dipped them the same as the bunny.  I added mini chocolate chips for the eyes.  I used some round sprinkles from Wilton for the cheeks and then some more heart shaped sprinkles on top.  To get the hearts to stick I added a little bit of melted CandiQuik and used it like a glue.  The beak is a mini Cadbury Egg.  I drew a line for the beak with an Edible Black Marker.  Then let it dry.  After it had dried, I added a bit more melted CandiQuik to make the little fluff of feathers on the top of his head.

Pretty simple to do!  Aren’t they so fun?  A simple and easy gift for kids classmates and friends or for yourself!
