summer oasis

Summer is a time for me to escape. Escape the everyday demands and pressures that come along with having the kids in school. Dealing with deadlines, homework, projects and kids sporting activities and schedules.

My backyard is a place that we enjoy escaping to. It is not perfect by any means…but there are a few fun areas in my yard that I enjoy relaxing in. We recently had to rebuild our entire deck because it was literally falling apart. Now I am able to sit down with a good book or work on my laptop while enjoying the summertime weather.

We also recently tore out some bushes in our front yard and made a nice sitting area on our front porch. So it is nice to be able to enjoy a summer afternoon thundershower while watching the kids play in the gutter and rain puddles.

Arm and Hammer Spinbrush Challenge

Today I want to share with you one last Arm and Hammer #switchandsave challenge that I am testing out…the Arm and Hammer Spinbrush ProClean.

image

I shared with you how much I really liked the Arm and Hammer Advance White Toothpaste with Stain Defense here. Today I am going to get rid of my old manual toothbrush and use my new Spinbrush exclusively. I am hoping that it makes my teeth feel extra clean.

Since the spinbrush can spin faster and in a circular motion, I am sure that it will definitely be able to remove more plaque and give me an overall cleaner smile. I will be sure to let you know how I feel about the Arm and Hammer Spinbrush ProClean when I have given a good couple of weeks testing.

The maker of ARM & HAMMER® products challenged me to switch to ARM & HAMMER Spinbrush ProClean and this summer, they are giving away $12,000 in the ARM & HAMMER Switch & Save Challenge Sweepstakes. To be entered to win one (1) of twelve (12) $1,000 prizes, simply reply to the question below!

Arm & Hammer Household solution

image

Last month I shared with you an annoying household challenge that I struggle with…hard water stains in my Master Bath. I was given a challenge to use Arm & Hammer Baking Soda to help take care of this little nuisance. I used a recipe found in this Arm and Hammer book that has over 100 tips and hints.

armandhammer

I whipped up this simple recipe above and then let it sit for an hour or so in the bottom of my bathtub with the drain pulled up.  Then I simply scrubbed all the soap scum out of the tub.  I had to work a little bit to get it off the really hard stains, but it came out nice and clean!

armandhammer 1

The ammonia I added has a strong smell so be sure to do this in a well ventilated area.  Other than that I was really happy with how clean my tub was!

The Charge: Brendan Burchard

I LOVE a good book. I have always been a reader and I usually do the most of my reading during the summer. So when I was asked to do a review of the book,  The Charge by Brendan Burchard, I was happy to accept.  I usually don’t read a lot of self-help or motivational books, but after doing a little more research about Brendan and The Charge, I decided to give it a try.

The Charge

Brendon introduces us to the concept of the 10 Human Drives and gives “Charge Points” at the end of chapters. “Charge Points” are sentence completion activities. They encourage you to think about the points discussed in the chapter and to set personal goals after learning about each of the Human Drives.There were several thoughts and concepts in the book that actually really made me think and gave me some motivation for some areas in my life that I felt I could actually make some changes too. The Human Drive that resonated the most with me was The Drive for Control. One of my favorite quotes from The Charge is this: “The in-box is nothing but a convenient organizing system for other people’s agendas”. Then Brendan shares some great tips and advice for how to tackle your day so that YOUR priorities and needs are not relinquished to the agenda of another.

Need a good summer read? You can get your own free copy of The Charge.  Order your free copy of The Charge today!

Share with us what makes you feel most alive for a chance to win a High Performance Academy Online Seminar with Brendon Burchard, author of The Charge (valued at $1,000).

PVC Sprinkler: Lowe’s outdoor challenge

The last week here has been H.O.T…HOT!!  With temps in the high 90’s and low 100’s we have been feeling the heat.  So when Lowe’s challenged their Creative Network to create something to make the outdoors more fun and memorable, I knew this PVC sprinkler would be a perfect fit and would cool us off.

pvc sprinkler 2

I have seen a few of these around, but the first one I saw was in the Family Fun magazine a couple of years ago.  I have always wanted to make one.

pvc sprinkler 6

I decided to come up with my own design and drew it out before we even got started. My husband and I made a few changes to the design when we actually put it together.

pvc sprinkler 4

I was really happy with how it turned out.  The kids LOVE it.  We even had the neighborhood kids and some cousins over to play in it with us.  The kids rode their scooters through it and we have plans to put it over the slip and slide.  Doesn’t that sound like a ton of fun?!

pvc sprinkler 3

PVC is really inexpensive and we were able to put this whole thing together for $25.  That is a pretty great price for something that entertained the kids for a couple hours every day and cooled them off during the hottest part of the day.

pvc sprinkler 5

I will be back to share with you the specific details for how we build this in case you would like to make something similar at your house.

What are some fun ways you are making memories outside this summer? We could always use some fun ideas around here!

Next month I will be back with another outside idea, courtesy of Lowes and I’ll be giving away another Lowes Gift Card!  So be sure to keep checking back!

Lowe’s “curb appeal” challenge & giveaway

This Giveaway is now CLOSED!!

This month, as one of Lowe’s Creative Bloggers, I was given the challenge of spicing up the “curb appeal” of my home.  I was a little bit more excited about this challenge than I should have been.

front curb appeal

{after}

The front of my house needed some serious attention.  It is not that I didn’t want to work on making it nicer…it just that it was a fairly big undertaking and we always had more pressing items on the to do list.

front curb appeal after

{after}

The bushes in the front of our house and the sides of the front porch were overgrown and needed to be removed.  In December, we had a huge windstorm with winds over 100 mph.  The wind blew from the East and both of these bushes sustained permanent damage on the East sides.  All the vegetation had been completely stripped from them.  It was time for them to go for good.

front curb appeal before 1

{before}

And those decorative trees?  Well they both were also pretty badly beat up.  One was completely broken in half…which is why it is leaning up on the brick wall.  The potted plants?  Well…both of those got blown right out of the pots.  We had replanted them hoping they would survive…but as you can see…they didn’t fare too well.  And…how do you manage to have a plant that is dead on one side and not the other?  Ha!

front curb appeal before

{before}

So this “curb appeal” was JUST the motivation I needed to get this area fancied up.  We got to work ripping out the two main bushes and a couple of smaller ones as well.  Then we bought some plants and flowers to add some much needed color and texture to the front of our home.

And…I FINALLY got the nerve up to paint my front door black!  Can I get a holler?  I have always LOVED black front doors.  We bought some new door hardware from Lowe’s which made a huge difference in the overall look of the finished front porch area.  I will be sure to share some things I learned and the products I used for painting the front door.

{mid project}

We also picked up these nice chairs from Lowe’s so we can sit on our front porch at night and enjoy the nice Summer Evenings we get here.  This is also where we come and enjoy a good summer afternoon rainstorm.

I am really happy with how the whole look of the front of my home has changed.  It was quite a bit of work…but it really needed to be done.  And guess what?  Lowe’s want to help one of you update your curb appeal.

Arm and Hammer Toothpaste Challenge

As you may know, I have been taking the challenge to try out some of Arm and Hammer’s products. This month I am going to be trying out the Arm & Hammer Advance White Toothpaste with Stain Defense.

arm and hammer toothpaste 1

I am kind of obsessed with white teeth. I really like white teeth…nothing quite like Willie Wonka’s (Johnny Depp) teeth…but nice, natural white teeth. I have used teeth whiteners in the past but worry about the harsh chemicals. And if I use it for more than a couple of days, my teeth start to feel sensitive to hot and cold items, which I do not enjoy.

So, for the next few weeks I will be brushing my teeth solely with Arm & Hammer Advance White Toothpaste with Stain Defense. Which claims to provide the following:

Extreme Whitening
Stain Prevention
Deep Cleaning
Breath Freshening
Fluoride Cavity Protection
Tartar Control

I am also hoping that it works great for keeping your breath fresh…because who doesn’t love fresh breath? Oh yeah…flouride cavity protection would be another awesome bonus…cause who really likes to get their teeth drilled at the Dentist?

I can’t believe I am actually posting a picture of my teeth on the internet…haha! Apparently I have no shame.  But…I am really curious to see a before and after picture to see if I can really tell a difference in my teeth.

I will for sure let you know when it is time to share the after pictures.

I was able to make a super simple and easy sign to go in my new laundry room with my Silhouette CAMEO.  I quickly whipped up this fun ‘herbs” sign.  I feel like it needs a little something more and thought a nice phrase in cursive under the HERB word would be nice.  Anyone have any brilliant thoughts about what that could be?
