It’s time once again for Heather from Family Volley to share with us some Parenting Tips as part of her “Parenting Tips Series with Heather Johnson” here on The Idea Room.
Here’s Heather in her own words…

At the start of every new school year, I start to wonder, can I really do this again? Packing lunches at dawn, homework, baseball practice, teaching, nursing a new baby, piano, dance, grocery shopping, rushing home to get dinner on the table, the kids in bed, just to start it all over again the next day?
I miss the slow pace of summer and being together as a family all the time. Finding family time during the school year can be a big challenge. I am not the only parent concerned about the rush that the school year brings. Questions are always coming in from concerned moms about how to focus more on family and less on the hectic lifestyle that they are living.

Hi Heather Ann,
Love your suggestions – especially the turn off the TV and limit activities. We read together – I read individually to each child, that is my special time with them to focus on each other and the book they have chosen, and then we have a family read time – where we are all together (even the dog) on the couch, discussing a book. We have outings each week to our library (couldn’t function without it) and I put together library collections (watch/listen/cook/read) so that we can cook together using a book that they would enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, we still have a lot going on between sports, school, church activities, etc. but our family time centers on books and each other. And I heart the fall – it is my favorite time of the year – feels like a new year to me.

What a GREAT list. My son is still pretty young, but there are already things I can implement here. Any suggestions on convincing my husband to turn off the TV (especially during dinner)?

If he must, maybe suggest that he records what he wants to watch and then wait and watch it later on? I know I love the news…I am an admitted junkie, (which my husband hates) but I also hate commercials, so I am always taping it and will fly through it later on. I can get a half hour program watched in about 5-10 mins this way!

This is such a great list. We try to implement most of the ideas, even though we aren’t always successful. ;)
The one I’ve never done is cooking double. I really need to start that!
