I have always wanted to try making Homemade Bath bombs because they can be so expensive to buy them. They were easier to make than I thought. I am sharing my step-by-step tutorial for making homemade bath bombs. Give them a try!
DIY BATH BOMBS
There are so many different ways to make them and a lot of recipes out there, that I felt a little bit overwhelmed. Some recipes were really complicated, so I played around and finally settled on this one. They turned out pretty good. I chose to make mine smaller so that I could share them with my three girls (heaven knows they would have just used them all up anyways…haha)! I really like adding the citric acid, but you have to be really careful when you mix the liquid to the dry ingredients. If you add a little bit of liquid and mix together (and repeat the process over and over) you will have much better results and won’t accidentally activate the citric acid. Be sure to follow the directions and it should work out well. I have heard that it might be more difficult to make them if you are in a really humid environment…so you might want to keep that in mind.TIPS FOR MAKING HOMEMADE BATH BOMBS
- Keep ratios in mind. In general a bath bomb is created by combining 2 parts baking soda to 1 part citric acid. Keep this 2:1 ratio in mind as you make your bath bombs and if you are thinking of experimenting and adding other dry ingredients.
- Be conscious of wet ingredients. Any additional wet ingredients can change the final product so be careful when adding a wet ingredient.
- Use witch hazel instead of water. Water will activate the fizziness and a reaction more than witch hazel will and you don’t want the reaction to occur until you are ready to use your bath bomb in your bath water. Use your spray bottle to spritz with witch hazel.
- Stir constantly while you add liquid ingredients. After your dry ingredients are thoroughly mixed add your wet ingredients slowly but stir constantly to keep the mixture moist so it doesn’t dry out and will stick together in the mold.
- Avoid food coloring. Food coloring can stain your tub. Use Mica Powder instead.
- Kaolin clay helps harden bath bombs. If your bath bombs come out to soft and crumbly try adding a small amount of Kaolin clay to your dry ingredients. Add about 1 tsp to a cup of dry ingredients.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE BATH BOMBS
- Place the dry ingredients in a bowl and then whisk ingredients until mixed thoroughly.
- In a separate container, mix the liquid ingredients together. If adding mica powder (colorant), or essential oils be sure to add them here and mix well.
- Slowly add the liquid mixture to the dry mix, one small spoonful at a time. Do not add too much liquid at once or the citric acid will be activated.
- Add the liquid until it is all mixed together. It should be a consistency that can pack well together.
- You can use a spray bottle filled with witch hazel if you need a little extra moisture…but not too much at once.
- Pack the mixture into a bath bomb mold and pack tightly, then let it dry overnight (or longer if needed or you are in a humid area). You will need to work quickly so that they do not start to dry out before they are packed into the molds.

HOW TO STORE HOMEMADE BATH BOMBS
Bath bombs should be stored in cool and dry places like cupboards or basements. Always store them in an air-tight container and keep them out of humidity or moisture. Storing them in a bathroom may not be the best idea due to the high humidity. Premature fizzing of bath bombs is mainly due to the moisture in the air.WHAT ARE THE BEST ESSENTIAL OILS TO USE IN BATH BOMBS?
I love using DOTERRA Essential oils. In my opinion, they are one of the highest quality oils you can find and are food grade safe. They are definitely my favorite essential oils. In this recipe I used olive oil, but any of the following oils work great.- sweet almond oil
- coconut oil (this oil solidifies at room temperature and will soften when you use it with warm water)
- grapeseed oil
- avocado oil
- nut oils (be careful if gifting this because many people have nut allergies)
- olive oil
- jojoba oil
