MARGHERITA PIZZA
Have you guys ever tried Margherita Pizza? It is my husbands favorite pizza…and my oldest son loves it too! When we make homemade pizza at our house for dinner, those two will always request this kind of pizza. It is so simple and easy to make and it’s pretty to look at too! Make some tonight with our Margherita Pizza Recipe.
HOMEMADE PIZZA
When we make homemade pizza, we usually whip up our favorite Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe. It’s so easy to make and tastes so much better than store bought pizza crusts…and we know exactly what we are putting into it. Then we roll out the dough into smaller individual pizzas for each member of the family. This way each person can customize their own pizza and add their own favorite toppings.
Sometimes…if we are in a rush because of a busy after school schedule, I will use flat bread for the pizza crust instead of our homemade pizza dough. I usually use this (Tandori Naan Flatbread by Stonefire) because it tastes so good and makes a great pizza crust when you are in a hurry. It is pretty pricey on Amazon…but I can always find it at SuperTarget and most grocery stores. You can get it in original or garlic.
PIZZA DOUGH RECIPE
If you haven’t ever made pizza dough from scratch, you won’t believe how easy it is. This pizza dough can be made in your mixer or by hand. We usually just mix it up by hand so that I don’t have to clean the mixer…is that lazy? haha!
Homemade Pizza Dough
Do you love pizza? All of my kids LOVE it when we make homemade pizza. We even make our pizza dough from scratch most of the time. If you haven’t ever made pizza dough from scratch, you won’t believe how easy it is.
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 tsp yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 1/4 cups cold water
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 5 1/2 cups unbleached bread flour divided
Instructions
-
Dissolve yeast in 1 cup warm water in a small bowl; let stand 5 minutes.
-
Combine 1 1/4 cups cold water, oil, sugar, and salt in a small bowl and stir together.
-
Combine 5 cups of the flour, yeast mixture, and cold water mixture in bowl and mix together until fully incorporated.
-
Turn dough out onto a floured surface from the left over flour. Knead until smooth and elastic (about 2 minutes). Add the rest of the flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, to prevent dough from sticking to hands (dough will feel sticky).
-
Set dough aside while finishing your dinner prep if you are using the dough within the next hour to bake.
-
Divide dough into two large balls and roll out into two pizza crusts. Roll them thin as they will rise and thicken while baking. (or break into several small pizza dough balls for individual pizzas).
-
Top the pizza crusts with your favorite toppings and Bake at 400 fro 18-25 minutes depending on how thick the pizza crust is.
-
If you are making the dough to use later, simply divide the dough in half (or more individual pieces), and place in a ziploc bag coated with cooking spray. Seal and chill in the fridge overnight or up to 2 days. Let stand at room temperature for 1 hour before using.
-
You can freeze the dough in heavy-duty, freezer-safe zip-top plastic bags for up to 2 months; thaw dough overnight in the refrigerator.
MARGHERITA PIZZA RECIPE
Simple is best with a Margherita Pizza. I have heard that the authentic Margherita Pizza in Europe don’t come with sliced tomatoes on them…and that is an Americanized version…but since I am not Italian…I am not sure if true or not. Does anyone know? Anyways…my guys love it with the fresh tomatoes so that is how we make it at our house.

Ingredients
- 12 inch pizza crust
- 3 Tbsp tomato sauce
- 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
- 2-3 oz fresh mozzarella sliced
- 1 Tbsp parmesan cheese grated
- 4-5 each basil leaves
Instructions
-
Place a pizza stone on the middle rack of your oven and turn heat to its highest setting (not to broil…my oven heats up to 550 degrees F). Let it heat for at least 30 minutes. If you don’t have a pizza stone, you can use a regular baking sheet.
-
Put the sauce in the center of the pizza dough and use the back of a spoon to spread evenly over the surface, stopping approximately 1/4 inch from the edges.
-
Drizzle a little olive oil over the pizza.
-
Break or slice the cheese into large pieces and place these on top of the sauce.
-
Scatter the basil leaves over the top.
-
Pick up the pie and slide it onto the heated pizza stone that is already in the oven.
-
Bake until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling, approximately 4 to 8 minutes (or until a little brown and crispy around the edges and the cheese are all melted.

Amy, my mother–law also has an intolerance to tomatoes, however yellow tomatoes. Have you tried them? I can’t imagine living without tomatoes!

How many minutes for pizza stone to heat up? There is no number in your recipe
The Idea Room Assistant says
I heat mine for 30 minutes. THanks and Enjoy!
We make similar pizzas using a whole wheat homemade pizza crust recipe. Soooo much better than absolutely any store bought pizza and I like it better than any pizzeria pizza. Plus you can customize your toppings anyway you like! Lately, we’ve been eating mushrooms with caramelized onions on our pizza. Yum!
That sounds delicious! I will have o try caramelized onions and mushrooms next time.
