We recently remodeled our Family Room 12 years after we moved into our 35 year old home. This room had never been my favorite because it had a bricked hearthstone with a wood burning stove. We loved using the wood burning stove in the winter, but the room was hard to arrange because of the windows and the corner stove.
I had debated about painting the brick white or tearing the brick out for a long…LONG…time. But because we couldn’t really make a decision and it was a big job, the project just sat at the bottom of our “want to do” list. Over Memorial Day of this year we suddenly had an entire free weekend. We just decided to finally get rid of the fireplace and make the room exactly how we wanted it. Because we already have 3 other fireplaces (2 gas and 1 more wood fireplace) we decided to take this one out.
We put those kids of ours to work! They actually loved it because it involved hammers, crowbars and destruction! Who doesn’t love that?!
After tearing it out, we had to repair the walls by shutting off the fireplace flue, adding sheet rock, replacing the plywood on the floor. We put ship lap on the walls (I will share how we did that in an upcoming tutorial), and added a barn door!
I have been in love with Barn Doors forever and have always wanted to incorporate them into our home. But because of the windows in our home there weren’t any places where we could put one other than this Barn Door we put in our Master Bedroom. By removing the fireplace, we freed up a wall that was perfect for a barn door.
We painted this barn door a pretty blue to add some color and interest to the room. We used Glidden Diamond in Key Largo Bay in a Semi-Gloss finish. I just love the color. It is a soft gray blue and looks so fresh next to the white ship lap!

I really liked using this paint. I have had a lot of experience painting and Glidden Diamond went on the wood surface so smoothly and covered the unfinished wood very evenly in just two coats. Painting unfinished wood takes some time to get it right because you need to apply a primer first. Glidden Diamond Paint contains a primer so that cuts out that extra step which saves a lot of time and work. The finished product is a smooth and beautifully finished wood door.
