This recipe is one of my kids all time favorite activities. We have made this Silly Putty Recipe so many times and it never disappoints.
This recipe only has three ingredients and they are easy to find. It was so simple…anyone can make this and have it turn out! I promise!
Homemade Silly Putty Recipe
4 oz Elmer’s Glue All
2 oz Sta-Flo Liquid Starch (in laundry aisle)
food coloring
- The basic silly putty recipe is 2 parts glue and 1 part liquid starch.
- We started with 4 oz of glue and pink food coloring.
- Then we added 2 oz of the liquid starch.
- We mixed it together with a wooden spoon.
- Once it thickened we then kneaded it for 5 minutes
- Store in an air-tight container. It should last for a few weeks if stored properly.
Make sure to keep it away from the carpet! Store in a plastic baggie when not is use.
Watch this easy how to video! So easy the kids can make it themselves!
This is such a fun activity for the kids and provides hours of entertainment for them. Great rainy day activity when the kids are forced to be indoors.

You know what first made me subscribe to your blog? Your creative lightbulb flowers/plants up top. Brilliant! lol. I keep coming back because you have great crafty ideas and give excellent photography pointers that I can actually understand. Love your blog. Thanks for the recipe. We'll have to try this out tomorrow after church. :)
This is going on my list of things to do to keep my little boy entertained in order to keep him out of my grandma's pond…. thanks!
I look forward to try the recipe out! I just recently found your blog (which is ridiculous because you are fabulous and I should have known about you many moons ago). Jen (Tattertots) just let me know that you recently addressed mean comments on your blog. I posted about it today because I couldn't let it go on any longer either. Just wanted you to know you aren't alone :).
Yay! I knew you would have a great kid recipe on here to inspire me on this super hot Florida day!!! Thanks Amy!!!! :-) Going to make silly putty right now…
I love all your fabulous ideas…especially the ones that help me keep my four boys busy!! Personally, we liked the Borax recipe better, too. Thank you for taking the time to write your blog (and for being so diplomatic and gracious when hit with adversity). As my boys say, "The Idea Room Rocks!"
I am sooooo going to do this! I LOVE the chipped nail polish on your daughter's fingers. That is how my daughter looks all the time and I'm so happy my daughter is not the only one!! :)
We made this on Sunday before church — my children LOVE it! We made pink, orange, blue and green….sooo much fun! Thank-you for sharing the recipe!
oooh! Wish I had this recipe last week! We made your fantastic slime recipe. Made it over vaca last summer too… I didn't have internet access up there, and we just got back last night. Ah, well.. Silly Putty made at home can be just as fun as Silly Putty made up north! LOL!
thanks, Amy!
can't wait to let the girls try it out :)
Just pinned this! What a great idea. My girls will love it.
thanks for sharing this tutorial!
I did this when I was in school and loved it. I have been looking for the recipe for a long time. I just did it with my three kids and they loved it!!!!
I’m thinking about making this for some nieces and nephews for Christmas….do you know how long the silly putty will last (in other words, can I make it in November and send it to them and still have
Oops! Accidentally hit the “enter” button while typing. Anyway, can I make it in advance and still have it be good when they open it up at Christmas, or is this something that needs to be played with the day it is made and thrown away in a week? Thanks for the help!
I wouldn’t make it too far in advance but a couple of weeks (two) should be fine.
I must have bought the wrong liquid starch. In any case, it never came together. Just a soupy mess. Help!
I think I used too much liquid starch. It’s so runny ?
Sue- Darn it. That can definitely happen. I try to just add a little at a time until I reach the consistency that I need. Hope you try another batch. It’s so fun to play with.
