Gifts of Christmas Gift Set

Yesterday I shared with you this simple Christmas gift idea based on the First Gifts of Christmas.  Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh were given to the Jesus by the Wise men who traveled from afar to see the Christ child.

sugar-scrubThe Christmas Holiday and Season has become so commercialized and as a mom, I struggle with trying to keep the focus of Christmas on the real meaning for my children.  We try to keep our Christmas presents for the kids fairly modest and reasonable…which can be difficult.   christmas-giftEvery year I try to come up with meaningful AND practical gifts.  I think this one fits those parameters.  As promised, I will be sharing the recipes and printables so that you can re-create these and give them this year to your loved ones.

*I do ask that…as always…not to use these for sale in your own shops, etc.  Please do not share these recipes on your own sites.  I appreciate you sending people back here for the recipes and printables.  These are for your personal use only.  I would hate to have to start charging you for these, which I have had to consider in the past due to gross misuse I have unfortunately seen with some of my creations.

Where can I buy the Frankincense and Myrrh Essential Oils?

I bought my Myrrh and Frankincense Essential Oils here:  Frankincense and Myrrh DoTerra Essential Oils

What size are my bottles?  Where did I purchase them?

My Frankincense bottle was purchased at Hobby Lobby.  It is 5 inches tall and 2.5 inches in diameter.  It holds about 3/4 cup. The bottle I used for the Myrrh was also purchased at Hobby Lobby.  It is about 5.5 inches tall and about 2.75 inches in diameter at the base.  It holds about 1 cup.  Both bottles came with the cork lids.

How do I make the gift crate/box?

I made the gift crate by simply cutting some old wood scraps so that they would fit my two bottles.  You may need to adjust your lengths and widths to fit the bottles you are using.  My finished crate measures 7 and 7/8 inch height (from base of the bottle to where the top of the bottle is in photo).  From side to side it measures about 7.5 inches in width.  And the box is about 3.5 inches tall (or sits up off the table at the base).  I hope that makes sense!

gifts-of-christmas-3arrows_thumb.jpg 1.  Cut 2 sides one length and then cut the top and bottom (2 pieces) a little bit shorter.  Cut them so that they can fit on top of the other one so that your box comes out with the right dimensions.  You will have to figure this out in your head based on the width of your wood.  I just eyeball it!

gifts-of-christmas-1.jpg 2.  Cut 4 or so 1 inch slats to make your base (or make a solid base). 3.  Glue them all together with a good wood glue.  We like Gorilla Wood Glue!  Throw a couple of small staples or nails in the sides to give it some extra hold.  Let it dry for 24 hours. 4.  Stain it or paint it.  I like Early American Stain by Min-Wax.  I just rub the stain on the box with an old rag (wearing gloves…sometimes).  Wipe off any excess and let dry.

How did I decorate the crate?

1.  I filled the crate with some dry moss.  I picked it up from Michael’s originally but it was laying around in my craft supplies.  If your moss is really messy you can lay a piece of cloth at the bottom of the crate.  I just used a piece of canvas drop cloth…(that stuff has come in handy!)

2.  Lay the bottles in the moss and situate them so there is a little on the sides and tops and bottom of the jars.  They will settle in real nice like!

3.  Take a linen gift sack.  I found mine at Michael’s as well.  Fill it with some gold foil candy coins.  I purchased a large bag of Belgium chocolate from Costco as I plan to give them away to several people and wanted a nice quality chocolate.  Or you can opt for the dollar store version.  (If you can’t find those or they are too pricey…opt for some gold Rolos…or if you can afford it…real Gold coins…and then be sure to gift one to me ;)!

How do I get the labels and the printable Gifts of Christmas Parchment Scroll?

I print them on white cardstock (on a laser so they don’t run if wet; a copy center works great too) and then cut them out.  To attach the labels to the bottle, simply glue them on with a glue stick.  It works amazingly well to hold them in place and looks like they are a sticky label!

*I am happy to share these with you…but please do not sell them or use them for anything other than your own personal use.  It is so discouraging to me to see them misused and on other peoples websites and ETSY shops.  Please keep it so that I do not have to charge for them.  If you use them and/or love them…please send people to my site to get them!  I always appreciate that!  Your traffic is what allows me to keep doing what I do and sharing with you!

Where can I buy the Frankincense and Myrrh Essential Oils (and others)?

I love DoTerra’s Essential Oils.  They are food grade safe and amazing quality and I use them all of the time.  I buy my oils from Julie Crowell.  She is happy to sell them to any of you who may want to purchase some and can answer any questions you may have.  Feel free to email her at [email protected] or message her on her wall or FB Page Drops 4 Life.  I think you will love them too!

Gift Games—Tic Tac Toe

Want a really easy gift game idea for your kids friends or for your neighbors this Holiday season? How about this simple but fun Tic Tac Toe game? This portable, magnetic game is perfect for taking on road trips, restaurants or appointments to help pass the time for your restless little ones…or let’s face it…yourself.  Want to know how I made it so you can make one to?  I thought so…

As part of the Martha Stewart Holiday Paint Campaign sponsored by Plaid, I was sent an amazing collection of paints, stencils and brushes from Martha’s new paint line! It was like Christmas morning! So many great products for creating so much creative goodness.

Thanksgiving game MS suppliesgift games awm

For this project, I used a couple of the paint products—Martha Stewart’s White Satin Paint and Martha Stewart’s Magnetic Paint. I used many of the various sized paint brushes they sent me and some fun Letter Stencils.  You will also need some magnets, a wooden plaque and some round wooden 1 inch buttons which I was able to pick up at Lowe’s.

Take your wooden plaque and paint three coats of the magnetic paint onto the front of it.  I painted just up to the edge of the plaque.  I followed the directions on the back of the magnetic paint label and painted one coat at a time and let it dry for an hour before painting each additional coat.  You will want to add at least two layers of the paint so that your magnets will hold well.  Then I let it dry for 24 hours.

While the magnetic paint was drying, I painted the wooden buttons using Martha Stewart’s satin white paint.  I loved this paint.  It was so thick and smooth.  It only took a two coats and the finish was so smooth and pretty.  After they had dried completely, I stenciled the letters x and o with the Martha Stewart Letter Stencils onto the white buttons.  I made a total of 10 buttons and made 5 o’s and 5 x’s.  When they are dry glue some magnets to the bottoms using some E6000 glue.

Then I painted the edges of the plaque with a coat of black paint.  This will show up under the white when I sand and rough up the edges for a nice distressed look.  When the black paint is dry, use the white satin paint again to cover up the black and to give your plaque a nice finished look.  I only painted around the sides and edges of the black as I added some fun patterned paper on the top.

Attach the paper with some Mod Podge with a layer underneath and a layer on the top to adhere and protect the paper. I prefer the matte finish Mod Podge.

When it has dried completely you can take a piece of sand paper and rough up the edges to give it a fun, distressed look.

Pretty simple and makes for a fun, homemade inexpensive gift idea.

And…that is not all…if you want you can change it up and turn it into a fun little photo display or recipe holder…
