Halloween Games—Mr. Bones

I can not believe that Halloween is right around the corner.  If you are a mom with kids in elementary school then you are probably scrambling trying to figure out something to do for the classroom party…am I right?  Last year we played this cute version of Halloween Bingo from my friends over at The Crafting Chicks.  This year my daughter is a “grown-up” 5th grader and requested a different game.  So I decided to come up with a new game.

And thus we have one of our newest Halloween games…Mr. Bones.

Skeletons:

I used my Silhouette Cameo machine and purchased one of their position-able skeleton images from their online shop for $1.  Then I cut several of them out on white cardstock.  Then took each one and glued them onto black cardstock and Mod Podged them up real good (nice grammar).  After they dried, I cut them out into individual skeleton parts. You will need one whole skeleton per person playing the game.

Game Dice:

To make the dice, I just got two wooden blocks (1 inch in size) and painted them white, Mod Podged on some fun gray polka dot scrapbook paper an then added some really small skeleton parts that I cut out in black cardstock.  Re-coat the entire dice with Mod Podge and let dry.  Important: You will need a different skeleton part represented on at least one side of the dice.  For example: you will need a skull, rib cage, clavicle, upper arm, lower arm, hand, pelvis, upper leg, lower leg, and a foot.  That is 10 body parts and my skeleton had 10 body parts.  That meant that I had two open spots on my dice.  So I added a skull and crossbones.  The skull and crossbones then become a fun twist to the game, which I will share in the rules of the game below.

Game Box:

For the game box I used a simple brown craft box which can be found at most craft stores.  I painted it white and then added some gray striped scrapbook paper.  Then I made the name out of some Iron-On Fuzzy Transfer from Silhouette.

How to Play Mr. Bones:

The general goal of this game is to see who can build their skeleton first.

Set out the pile of bones in the center of the table.

Each player will take a turn rolling both dice.

The skeleton parts on the dice are the parts you will be able to grab from the pile to build your Mr. Bones.

halloween-game 4

If you roll one skull and crossbones this allowed you to take a bone from an opposing player.

If you roll two skull and crossbones, you had to return ALL of your bones to the pile in the middle and start over.

The first player to build their entire Mr. Bones wins.

That’s all there is to it.  It is pretty simple and you can change it up too depending on the age of kids you are going to be using it for.  As a science teacher you could also add the scientific names to the dice rather than the picture to help your students learn the names of the bones.

If your kids are younger and need help knowing where the skeleton bones need to go, you can print out a full skeleton on a sheet so the kids can look and see just where each bone needs to go.  I did this for my two younger kids when we played this for Family Night the other day.

My kids LOVED this game and my daughter is excited for me to bring it to her class party next week!

What do you think? As always, I would love to see if any of you end up making your own Mr. Bones game.

Severed Witch Finger Pens

We just got back from a family vacation where I ate WAY too much and went unplugged for a week.  It was awesome!  And now I am having a horrible time re-entering my regular schedule.  The vacation was just what we needed…and unfortunately had to come to an end at some point.  Now I am knee deep in laundry and all the mess that goes along with a family trip.

But I wanted to hurry up and get these Halloween Crafts up so that some of you might have a chance to make it before Halloween this year if it is something you are interested in…Halloween Severed Witch Finger Pens.

My son came home with one of these from a Halloween Classroom Party last year.  It was a huge hit at our house.  So, of course, I had to make some this year.  All you need are a few simple items.

You will need:

Model Magic (we used white)

Fake Fingernails

Pen

Simply grab a small bit of model magic.  A little bit will really go a long way.  You need just enough to cover the pen.  Then simply roll the clay between your fingers and a table top so that you have a long “snake” like roll that is just a bit longer than your pen.

Place your pen on top of the roll making sure to leave the writing end of the pen uncovered.  Carefully pinch and roll the clay around the pen so that the pen is completely covered.  Gently roll the pen and the clay now between your fingers and the table again so that you get a nice smooth edge where the clay comes together along the seam.  Make sure the end of the pen is covered completely.  This is going to be the tip of the finger.

Then gently press in areas on the finger that would coincide with the knuckles and natural bends in a finger.  I then took a knife and gently made some marks to look like the wrinkles over the knuckles on the skin of the finger.

Push the fake fingernail into the top of the pen so that it looks like a natural fingernail.  I pushed it in a bit more at the base of the fingernail so that it gives it a more natural fingernail.  You can leave the fingernail natural or you can paint the nail.  I chose to paint ours red.  I simply took the nail off the clay before it dried and painted it.  When the paint was dry, I glued the nail onto the finger with some hot glue.  Then you can let the fingers air dry for a couple of days or bake them in a very low oven (100 degrees).  Be sure your fingernails can handle the heat before you go that route though…

These are so easy to make and would be the perfect party craft for kids to make on their own.  What do you think?

Halloween Pop Box Gift

So excited to welcome Kristyn today as part of our Fall Festival!  Kristyn is sharing an awesome tutorial for these DIY Halloween Candy Bottles and gift box.

Hi there Idea Room readers!! It’s Kristyn from Lil’ Luna! I’m so thrilled to be here today. I admire Amy so much, and look up to her not only as a blogger, but also as a friend and mother. The girl is amazing and so talented, so was I ecstatic when she asked for me to guest post today.

As I think about cooler weather and Fall, I can’t help but think of Halloween. It’s one of my favorite holidays, and our family has made some super fun traditions for that holiday. Although gift giving is associated more with Christmas, our family has actually tried serving and doing nice things for others all year round, and even around Halloween. People can always use a pick me up, right? So, this year I decided to come up with a super cute Halloween Pop Box Gift. I’ve made them in the past for Valentines, Christmas and Birthday, and they’ve alwas been a hit. Why not a Halloween version?! It can be given to your child’s teacher or just to a family who needs some extra cheer. It’s even great for the hubby!! This gift is easy and perfect for anyone.
