Healthy Kids with Odwalla Smoothies

If you have been following along with us here at The Idea Room, then you know how much I enjoy doing creative things with my family.  The seasons are changing and fall is quickly moving into winter at our house.  Pretty soon we will be spending a lot more time indoors due to rainy and snowy weather.  So, as a mom, I am always on the lookout for creative indoor activities for my children and I.

One of our favorite indoor activities to do together is to make and then play with the BEST Homemade Play Dough….EVER.  We use a secret ingredient to give the play dough a delicious smell and color.  Have you ever made Play Dough with your kids?  If not, you won’t believe just how easy it is…and the Play Dough is better than any you can buy in the store.  Watch the video tutorial and learn how to make play dough.

Last month I shared with you some tips for Encouraging Creativity in Your Kids.  As part of that post, I also introduced you to Odwalla Smoothies for Kids which comes in three delicious flavors.

How To Make Play Dough—Peppermint

Sorry about not getting this up sooner.  Things have been crazy around here with that wind storm.  I just finally found some time to sit down and get this typed up.  Have you ever wondered how to make Play Dough?  It could not be simpler.  I have shared how to make some fun Kool-Aid Flavored Play Dough and Pumpkin Spice Play Dough.  Well, since it is Christmas time, I decided we needed to make some Peppermint Play Dough.  So I fiddled with the recipe a bit and came up with a recipe for some yummy smelling Peppermint Play Dough.

Peppermint Play Dough Recipe

1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
2 tablespoons
cream of tartar
1 Tablespoon Peppermint Oil Extract
1 tablespoon
vegetable oil
1 cup water

1. Mix flour, salt, & cream of tartar in a medium cooking pot.
2. Add water, peppermint extract and oil.
3. Stir over medium heat 3 to 5 minutes stirring constantly.
4. When mixture forms a ball in pot, remove.
5. Knead until smooth.
6. Play and explore with this fragrant, brightly colored dough as you would any play dough.
7. Put in a plastic bag and refrigerate to store.

A great way to entertain the kids during Christmas break.  Or a great gift for a neighbor, classmates or friends.  It is so easy to make and is the softest (non sticky) Play Dough recipe I have ever used.  I like it better than the store bought stuff…plus…it smells amazing!!  And if you are feeling extra festive…throw in a handful of red glitter to give it some fun sparkle!

And, in the spirit of giving, I have provided you with a free printable Peppermint Play Dough label for the tops of your jars or Tupperware containers to label it for a gift.  The labels are 3 inch circles.  If you need them smaller you can simply print the label smaller than 100% to get the size you need.

I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.  I would love to hear from those of you who are planning on making some for yourself or who plan on gifting it.  19 more sleeps till Christmas…but who’s counting!!

Need a non-candy small gift item for your kids friends and classrooms this Halloween? Or a fun Halloween Craft?  Why not make some of these mini Halloween Play Dough Characters.

Fill them with some easy to make Play Dough. I love making this Play Dough and shared it with my readers a couple of years ago. It is so soft and smells so good. And you can customize it by just using different packs and flavors of Kool-Aid or any powdered drink mix packet.

I simply took the ball of white Play Dough and separated into four different equal pieces and then colored each section a different color with a couple of drops of food coloring. Then drop some play dough into some small containers. I found mine at my local craft store for really inexpensive, but you could also repurpose some small baby food jars if you have some of laying around too.

Then I simply decorated each little container to represent some sort of Halloween character with google eyes, pom poms and construction paper.

The possibilities are endless! And you can have a fun little take home goody for a lot of different activities.

Wouldn’t these be fun to give to your kids classrooms for the Halloween class party? Or as a small party favor? Or give to your kids in your church group? Or if you are feeling extra motivated…make them to give to the Trick-Or-Treaters?
