DIY Whipped Body Butter Recipe

I am really excited about today’s post! Still working with bad cell phone pictures…bear with me. My camera finally arrived and I am excited to start learning it. The bad pictures are killing me! First world problems. Anyways…winters are really dry here and I am loving this amazing Whipped Body Butter recipe I have been playing around with.

body-butter

I finally got the right combination to make this smooth and creamy body butter. It was a lot of fun experimenting and was definitely out of my comfort zone. I did a bit of research first and found a lot of the same basic recipes but wanted to incorporate coconut oil. Coconut oil is such a great oil for your skin and is the main oil I have to use due to my food allergies.

whipped-body-butter-recipe Ingredients:

1 cup Cocoa Butter , grated

1/4 cup Coconut Oil

1/4 tsp. Vanilla

1/2 Cup Almond Oil

Instructions:

1.  Melt the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a double boiler or in bowl placed in a saucepan of boiling water.

2. When melted completely, add almond oil and vanilla.

3.  Chill in the refrigerator or freezer until slightly hardened (about 20-30 minutes)

4.  Whip with your hand mixer until smooth and creamy

5.  Place into a container.

6.  Makes about 1 cup

7.  It will harden a bit more due to the coconut oil.  Simply scoop some out and it will melt in your hand so that you can rub it into your skin.

It makes your skin feel so smooth and soft and it smells so yummy!  My husband who usually has nothing to do with my sugar scrubs uses this now on his hands at night!  But let’s just keep that between us…mmmkay?!

Lavender Sugar Scrub Recipe

Today I am finally sharing my newest Sugar Scrub Recipe.  I love experimenting with new Sugar Scrubs and when we use up the last one, it’s time to come up with another one.  This time I chose to make a Lavender Sugar Scrub.

Lavender-Sugar-Scrub

But I think I am finally losing it… Last night I finally sat down to edit these pictures that I had sitting on my camera for the past several days, and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get them to download.  The computer wasn’t even recognizing my camera card.  Then I searched through the house to find the download cord only to find that wouldn’t work either.

Lavender

So I gave up, ate a snack, and then went to bed.  This morning I was determined to figure out the problem…after the kids went to school of course and you know what?  The camera photo card was sitting in my other computer.  Gah!  Haha!  It’s amazing what a good night’s rest will do for your brain.

Sugar-scrub-recipe

So, my camera card is not corrupt and all is well and the bonus?  I get to share this recipe today and you get to make some!  You might want too because the Lavender smells amazing! This Lavender Sugar Scrub would also make a great Valentine’s Day gift!

Lavender-Sugar-Scrub

Lavender Sugar Scrub Recipe

1/2 cup white granulated sugar

1/2 cup raw sugar

up to 1/4 coconut oil melted (or almond oil) as needed

1 tablespoon dried Lavender (optional but recommended)

3-4 drops DoTerra Lavender Essential Oil

Directions:  Mix together the sugars and slowly add the coconut or almond oil while stirring.  Pour in as much oil as you need to get your desired consistency.  I do not like my sugar scrubs too oily so I always use less than 1/4 cup.  Stir and mix thoroughly.  Stir in the essential oil and the Lavender.  Store in an airtight container.  Lasts up to 3 months if you keep bacteria and germs out of the scrub. To use:  Rub a little bit of the scrub on your body or between your hands with a little bit of water.  Rinse with warm water to remove excess oils.  It will give your skin a nice exfoliation and leave your skin feeling soft and smooth and smelling like Lavender.  Great for use in the shower or bath and before bed time.

Frankincense Sugar Scrub Recipe

3/4 cup Raw Sugar

1/4 Granulated White Sugar

up to 1/4 Olive Oil (I like them less oily and used about 1/8 cup)

*I purposely chose Olive Oil in keeping authentic with the Christmas Story in the Middle East.

5 drops of Frankincense DoTerra Essential Oil

*optional—2 drops of Wild Orange DoTerra Essential Oil

Mix the sugars together in a bowl and then slowly add Olive Oil while mixing.  Add enough oil to get a good consistency…but not too oily.  Add your essential oil(s) drops and mix together again.  Scrub should last up to 3 months in an air tight container.  Use the scrub on skin as to exfoliate for smooth, soft skin.  Makes about 1 cup.

Chocolate Sugar Scrub Recipe

You know I had to try it….

a Chocolate Sugar Scrub!

chocolate-sugar-scrub

It’s chocolate-y…and I like it!

chocolate-sugar-scrub

I hope you are not sick of these sugar scrubs! I am having a lot of fun experimenting with some different combinations.  They make fun gifts and…well…its that time of year!

chocolate-sugar-scrub

One of the best things about this gift is the potential for cute packaging…and you KNOW how much I love gifts in a jar! Jars just make everything cute.  I get asked a lot about how I attach my bottle labels.  I simply print them out on my laser printer (or you can print them at a copy shop) onto white cardstock.  Then I cut them out and paste them onto the bottle with a simple glue stick.  This works really well and is fast an easy!  You can print them on sticker paper if you want, but I find that to be a lot more expensive.

chocolate-sugar-scrub

Many of you have asked in the past about where I find my jars.  So I thought I would share it here with all of you.  I find a lot of cute bottles at Hobby Lobby and they have them on sale for half price a lot of the time.  This particular jar was $1.50 on sale.  I also LOVE using Starbucks Frappuccino Bottles too!  Those are the ones I use most frequently and I am lucky to have a friend who gives me them when she is done with them.

Chocolate Sugar Scrub Recipe:

1/2 cup raw cane sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

1 Tbsp. cocoa baking powder

*don’t add more cocoa unless doubling…it will turn your skin brown ;)

up to 1/4 cup Almond Oil {Coconut or Olive Oil}

1/2 tsp. vanilla

chocolate shavings from bakers chocolate square (optional)

a few drops of Vitamin E oil (optional)

*If you want to spice it up you can add some peppermint oil or cinnamon oil for a fun twist.  I did not do that for this recipe.

Mix together the sugars and cocoa in a bowl.  Slowly add the oil until you have your desired consistency.  I prefer mine to be drier than oily.  But of course you can make it to your likes.  Add the vanilla and Vitamin E if desired and stir all together until combined.  Store in an airtight jar or container.  Should last for up to 3 months.

You guys know I love me a good sugar scrub.  I love to play around with some of the different DoTerra Essential Oils I have and make sugar scrubs that smell delicious but also provide the benefits of the various oils.

cinnamon-sugar-scrub

I personally love the scent of Cinnamon AND the scent of Vanilla.  They remind me of the holidays and winter time.  So I decided to make a Cinnamon Vanilla Sugar Scrub…and let me tell you…this one smells so good!  I think it is now my favorite so far.

DIY-sugar-scrub

Isn’t she pretty to look at too?  I love the texture of this one.  This sugar scrub is a little bit different than my other ones because I added some Raw Cane Sugar.  This sugar has a larger granule and I love the feeling and the exfoliation it along with the smaller granules of the white sugar.

cinnamon-vanilla-sugar-scrub

Here is the recipe:

Cinnamon Vanilla Sugar Scrub

1/2 cup White Sugar

1/2 cup Raw Cane Sugar (baking aisle)

up to 1/4 cup oil (Olive Oil, Almond Oil, or Coconut Oil)

1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract or Essential Oil

2-3 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil (I love DoTerra’s)

dash of cinnamon (optional)

cinnamon-vanilla-sugar-scrub

Simply mix all the sugars and the vanilla and the essential oils.  Then gradually add the oil base mixing while pouring.  Add the oil until you are happy with the texture and consistency of the scrub.  I like mine a little on the non-oily side.  But it is just a matter of preference really.

homemade-sugar-scrub

To use, simply gather a small amount in your fingertips or with a small spoon.  Rub together in your hands and scrub your skin with it.  Rinse off with warm water.  This will leave your skin feeling so silky soft and smelling like cinnamon and vanilla.

Gift it this year to your family and friends.  They will love it!  Or gift it to yourself!

2013 is not getting off to a very good start around here.  When it rains…it pours…right?  So not only am I in the midst of a huge elimination diet due to some newly discovered food allergies/intolerances, but my sweet Mom suffered a stroke on Tuesday morning.  She spent two days at the hospital and we found that she has had some past strokes from her MRI.  She is just fine now with just a few lingering effects and hopefully she should recover fully in time.

Unfortunately, we have been down this road before with my Dad who has also suffered several strokes.  After one particularly large stroke, we discovered my Dad had a hole in his heart.  He had heart surgery to repair the hole about 8 years ago.

Anyways, needless to say I wasn’t around much last week.  Things are getting back to normal and I am trying to get caught up with my life.  I have had this post sitting here half finished, but there were plenty of more important things I needed to attend too.

Sugar-Scrub-Cubes

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I wanted to come up with a gift idea you can give to your girlfriends or yourself.  The sugar scrubs I have shared recently have been a big hit.  So I decided to switch things up and go with a Sugar Scrub Cube.

Sugar-Scrub

Sugar Scrub Cubes are fun because they are single serving cubes that have all the same qualities of an awesome sugar scrub in a fun this square.

I looked all over to see if I could find a great recipe, but I couldn’t find anything that didn’t require some special soap base, which I didn’t have.  So I did a little experimenting and came up with a little recipe that I really like.

Here is what you will need:

Almond Oil or Coconut Oil (or oil of your choice)

White Granulated Sugar

Shredded Bar of Soap

An Essential Oil (I used DoTerra’s Citrus Bliss)

Mixing Bowl

Spoon

Microwave and possibly a double boiler

A mold or a scoop

sugar scrub cube-1  scrub 2  scrub

This recipe calls for 1 part oil, 2 parts shredded soap, and 3 parts sugar.

Sugar Scrub Cubes:

1/4 cup Almond Oil

1/2 cup Shredded Soap

3-4 drops of Essential Oil

1 cup Sugar

1.  Pour the oil into a bowl and add the shredded soap of your choice.  Microwave this on high for 10 second intervals stirring in between each.  If this does not work to slowly melt your soap into your oil you may have to melt the soap shaving in a double boiler.  (If you don’t have a double boiler like me, simply place a small bowl over a saucepan filled with boiling water).

2.  When the mixture is melted and and stirred together, add several drops of your Essential Oil.  I used DoTerra’s Citrus Bliss.  {If you have not used DoTerra’s oils, you are missing out!  I love them.  I get mine from my friend Julie Crowell.  You can find more information by clicking on the link.  I will be sharing a bit more about my love for doTerra oils in an upcoming post}.

3.  Get your mold ready to go before adding the sugar.  This is important because once the sugar is added the scrub will harden VERY quickly.

sugar cubes 5

4.  Pour in sugar and stir quickly.  Take mixture and place it into your molds with your fingers.  Or…if you don’t have a mold you can take a scoop and make rounded sugar “cubes”.

5.  Let cubes harden by popping them into the freezer for at least 30 minutes.  Then pop them out of the mold and cut them into fourths depending on the size you would like them to be.

citrus sugar scrub cubes-04

Then simply throw them into a fun air tight container and add a cute label.

Sugar scrubs smell amazing and gently exfoliate your skin for a smooth feeling.  The fun thing about these sugar scrub cubes is that they also have a fun “cleaning” element with the addition of the soap.  And the citrus bliss smells amazing and has some relaxation and calming benefits which you can learn more about here.

Guess what? I have another version of some sugar scrubs for you today.  I LOVE these!  And they make the perfect homemade gift.  Last week I shared with you a Thanksgiving version…Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub Recipe.  This time I wanted something that was Christmas in a Jar!  So what could be better than a Peppermint Candy Cane Sugar Scrub.

Sugar-Scrub-recipe

Sugar Scrubs are a great way to add some moisture and soften up winter-dry skin.  And who doesn’t need that this time of year.  It is also a great way to relax during this crazy busy season.

Candy-Cane-Sugar-Scrub-04

I simply took two cups of white granulated Sugar and mixed in a 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup Almond Oil (Coconut Oil will work too).  Add the oil slowly till you have a nice soft consistency that is soft but not too oily.  Then add a few drops of Peppermint Essential Oil.

Candy-Cane-Sugar-Scrub-08

Once you have it all mixed together you will want to divide the scrub into two equal parts and in separate containers.  You will need to add some color to one of the containers.  You can use a little bit of food coloring OR you can add some raspberry juice like I did.  I simply took a couple of drops of juice from a bag of frozen raspberries…the perfect organic red colorant.

Candy-Cane-Sugar-Scrub-10

Make a large funnel out of a piece of paper (a small one will not allow enough room for the sugar scrub to pass through it) and add a small amount into the jar.  Press the sugar down lightly so that the sugar is even.

Candy-Cane-Sugar-Scrub-12

Then add a white layer so that they are about the same height and flatten it.  Continue back and forth with as many layers and as thick or thin a layer you would like.  So pretty right?

sugar-scrubs

Print out a pretty label and add some fun scrapbook paper or bow and you have the perfect hostess or Holiday gift!

Lemon Sugar Scrub

I am still recovering from this last weekend.  My feet are killing me.  We did a lot of walking and running back and forth to make sure everything was running smoothly with  the Snap Conference.
sugar-scrub-recipe

Me feet needed a little extra love and pampering.  So I was excited to be able to use some of this amazing Lemon Sugar Scrub.  I whipped it up a couple of weeks ago and have used it a couple of times but still had some left. Perfect!

lemon-sugar-scrub

It is so easy to make. Really! I simply took two cups of white granulated Sugar and mixed in a 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup Almond Oil (Coconut Oil will work too).  Add the oil slowly till you have a nice soft consistency that is soft but not too oily.  Then add a few drops of Lemon Essential Oil.

sugar-scrub-recipe
Scoop the mixture into a pretty jar.  And keep it all to yourself.  Or…if you are the sharing type…which sometimes I am, gift it to your mom or one of your best girlfriends!  They will love you forever!
lemon-sugar-scrub wm_thumb[3]
This stuff is really so amazing and feels so decadent and expensive.  No one will be the wiser that it was so easy and inexpensive to make.  Those are the best kind of gifts to give…am I right?
sugar-scrub-recipe

This makes your feet so soft and makes them smell so good.  Perfect for those summer time feet.

I made the labels on my Silhouette CAMEO.  I made the file into a pdf so that you can print it out here.  Simply print on white card stock and cut it out and glue on the jar with a glue stick.  Works like a charm.
