I recently shared this Weathered Wood Sign that I made for The DIY Club that I am involved with once a month. I get sent a box of supplies from some great sponsors and then I get to make a fun item using as many of the supplies that I can. I haven’t shared it here on The Idea Room yet, but wanted to make sure that I was able to share it here with you as well. I really like what it adds to our family photo display that I am currently trying to put together in our basement were we just added DIY Faux Wainscoting to recently. We also made the long 8 foot shelf that we are displaying some family photos on. I will share that tutorial with you at a later date too.
Here is how I made the weathered wood sign…I took a piece of old weathered plywood that we had stored in our attic {don’t ask…LOL…my husband has a problem getting rid of some things, but this time I was happy he had saved it}. I cut it on the table saw so that it measured 11 inches by 18.5 inches. I chose that size because I wanted to have two inches of space around the vinyl lettering I was planning to place on it.
I prepped the wood by cleaning it up with a rag and sanding all the rough edges with my electric hand-held sander. Then took some Americana Gel Stain in Maple and painted it onto the wood in small sections and wiped it off with a rag. I did this over the entire surface a couple of times till the sign was stained equally in the desired darkness.
Then I let the sign dry for a full 24 hours. After the sign had dried, I took my vinyl from Ten 23 Vinyl and placed it {without removing the transfer paper} on the board and took my measuring tape and made sure it was centered on the board on the top and bottom as well as the sides. When I was sure I had it positioned correctly, I took some chalk and lightly traced the paper. This will allow me to line it up again when I am applying the vinyl to the board. This little trick has saved me some major vinyl placement headaches in the past.
After the vinyl was in place, I took my Rockler Sanding Bug and roughed up the edges of the board to add to the weathered look of the board.
Then to protect the wood and to keep the vinyl nice, I sprayed the wood with some Deft Clear Finishing Spray. I really like this product and it gave it a nice overall finish, and not too shiny or lacquered looking.
Then I couldn’t decide if I wanted to hang it on the wall with this brilliant dischanger which simply attaches to the back of the middle of the wood. Then you simply hang it on the wall from a nail. I still haven’t quite decided.
For now, I will display it on this easel till I figure out exactly how to arrange everything on the photo shelf.
Either way, I am really happy with how simple the sign is. And our couches in the basement are a nice chocolate brown and our entertainment center is black. So it fits in really nicely with the overall look and feel of the room. What do you think? Should I hang it on the wall or leave it displayed on the shelf?
And…I would love for you to check out my friend Becca from Blue Cricket Design fun new Spring bunting. I love how fun and festive it is. Perfect project for helping brighten your home just in time for Easter!
