HOW CAN I MAKE MY SHOWER MORE LUXURIOUS?
There is nothing quite like a hot shower especially after a long day for some self care or to wake you up on a freezing cold morning. I love taking a nice hot shower. Did you know you can turn your shower into a spa by adding one simple thing to it? An aromatherapy shower bomb. They can also do wonders for you if you are feeling under the weather and want to relive some congestion.
WHAT IS AN AROMATHERAPY SHOWER BOMB?
I had recently heard about using Essential Oils to make a Shower Bomb, so I did a little research and made my own.
They are so simple to make. They are made from Baking Soda, Water and Essential Oils (particularly Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Lavender).
HOW TO USE AROMATHERAPY SHOWER BOMB
When you are ready to take a hot shower, place the Aromatherapy Shower Bomb in the corner on the floor of your shower (or shower shelf) where there is little chance that a direct stream of water will splash on it, so that the shower bomb slowly breaks down. The slower it breaks down in the shower the longer you will be able to enjoy the aromas and allow the release of the oil vapors in your steamy shower.
USE AN AROMATHERAPY SHOWER WHEN SICK
A great way to relive some stress and congestion when you are feeling sick is to use one of these shower bombs in your steamy shower. You will want to use essential oils like eucalyptus oils, peppermint, mint, lavender, ginger, breathe, and chamomile to help alleviate some of your symptoms and to help clear your sinus and airways to help you breathe and sleep better.
HOMEMADE AROMATHERAPY SHOWER BOMBS
These homemade aromatherapy shower bombs worked so well! My kids are still begging to use them.
We used all the Aromatherapy Shower Bombs I made using Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Lavender Essential Oils. So I decided to experiment and make some other Shower Bombs using different oils. I now have them in my bathroom waiting to be used when I need a little pick me up when I am tired or stressed and want to take a warm and steamy aromatherapy shower!
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHOWER BOMB AND BATH BOMB?
Well, aside from the most obvious difference…shower bombs are for use in the shower and bath bombs are for use in a tub full of water, there are some key differences in the two.
Shower bombs typically contain similar ingredients to bath bombs, but the main difference is that they don’t require large quantities of moisturizing oils, since they don’t come into contact with the skin. Shower bombs also have a much higher concentration of essential oils, as they’re largely focused on aromatherapy and creating a relaxing experience through scents.
BEST ESSENTIAL OILS TO USE IN AROMATHERAPY SHOWER BOMB
There are a wide range of essential oils and aromas you can use to enjoy in your steamy shower to create a beautiful and relaxing spa experience at home. Each essential oil will smell different and each have different benefits and properties. I wanted to share with you a list of the most popular ones and what some of the benefits of each oil are!
- Chamomile: Reduce stress and anxiety.
- Clary sage: Promote relaxation, peace and tranquility.
- Eucalyptus: Clear sinuses and soothe respiratory system
- Ginger: Reduce nausea.
- Lavender: Better sleep.
- Lemon: Increase happiness, improve concentration.
- Lemongrass:
- Peppermint: is uplifting, Boosts alertness, reduce headaches.
- Rosemary: Increase focus.
- Orange: bright, uplifting aroma that cleanses and refreshes the air.

- baker’s twine or cute red and white striped ribbon

INGREDIENTS FOR AROMATHERAPY SHOWER BOMBS
- Baking Soda
- water
- high quality Essential Oils
HOW TO MAKE AROMATHERAPY SHOWER BOMBS
-
Add the baking soda to a bowl and slowly add the water while stirring constantly. Add just enough water (between 1/4 and 1/3 cup of water) to make a thick paste.
-
When you grab a handful of the paste, it should hold its shape when you squeeze it in your hand and should feel more dry than wet.
-
Do not add too much water. If you do…just add a little more baking soda to the mix.
-
Fill your molds (silicone flexible molds are the best so they can be removed easily as they can be a little crumbly) with the paste.
-
Pack them down tightly.
-
Let dry completely (this is crucial). Mine took a couple of days to get a nice solid shape. Or bake them in a low temperature oven (if your mold is oven safe) at 200 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes.
-
Let cool.
-
I used a mold similar to this one: Wilton Mini Silicone Mold
-
Carefully remove from molds and store in an air tight container. Humidity will cause them to break down.
-
Add the essential oils to the dried shower bombs right before use in the shower or bath for best results! Soak several drops of oil into each of them all around the shower bomb.
I know you are going to enjoy making them almost as much as you enjoy them in your showers! Hopefully these will become a normal part of your shower routine when you need a little stress relief and a bit more self care!

sorry, did I miss the part where you add the essential oils?
Amy says
No! I forgot to add that when I wrote it. I just added it! Thanks!
yes – how much oil & when do you add it? Does 10 peppermint (for example) mean 10 drops, parts, tsps… I’ve never done anything like this & really like the idea as well as simplicity but am just a little confused. Would you mind clarifying for me? Thanks so much!
You will add 3-4 total drops. Depending on how much of each. I did 2 Eucalyptus (since we wanted breathing relief the most) then 1 of lavender and 1 peppermint. I used high quality oils though so they are not watered down and you don’t need as much. If you use different oils you might need to add more to get the same effect. Smell the paste and you should be able to tell how strong it will be. If you make it with different oils just remember you will only need about 3-4 drops for each batch! Does that make sense? Feel free to ask any other questions you may have! :)
What brand oils do you use? Im very new to this. I heard NOW essential oils are good?
Doterra Brand is my favorite. I buy them here: http://www.mydoterra.com/theidearoom/#/
Look up the Plant Therapy website. If you have children, I would suggest purchasing from the KidSafe line. If you are new, always look into safety considerations. For example, eucalyptus and peppermint shouldn’t (or only very cautiously) be used around kids, yet lots of sites will tell you to do so. Some oils interfere with medications. Some, like lavender, are very safe but will have opposite effects in a small portion of the population (lavender is calming for most people, but for about 10% it is a stimulant – it puts me on edge and makes me really jumpy – not good for bedtime).
JC- I agree, I would definitely look into all that you mentioned above before using on children. I would always dilute with fractionated coconut oil when using on small children.
If you heat the oils, they loose their therapeutic integrity.
You are correct. But we do not heat them in any way. The shower bombs just sit in the corner of the shower and release vapors into the steam of the shower.
You mentioned baking them at 200 degrees. That would breakdown any therapeutic proprieties in the oils. I’m not sure how much it would effect it but baking, baking soda makes washing powder from what I understand.
She said “OR” bake them. Which doesn’t mean you have to.
Also, she adds the oils after baking
Yes, I was also wondering when you add the oils? Thanks
Sorry! Fixed the recipe so those instructions are included! ;)
With this sort of thing- it’s usually in drops, and I would add the essential oils as your making your paste.
Yes! Thanks for answering! I love when my readers help out when I haven’t had a chance to answer yet!! I forgot to add that in the recipe! Fixed it now! xo
Can I just put a bomb in my tub water and soak?
You could! The only difference is that you won’t get the steamy effects the shower will give you. BUT…you will get a nice soak in Baking Soda with the great aromatherapy smells of the oils and some oils in your skin! So it also has great benefits!!
I will have to try this, we have had the cold bug for weeks!
Oh no! Sometimes it can hang around forever! Hope you finally get over it!!
I am disappointed they only last a few weeks. Is there a way to store them where they will last a couple months or more? I may not get a cold within a few weeks and if I wait til I do and it takes several days for it to dry it may not be helpful.
Try freezing them and see if that prolongs them. Pull them out of the freezer when you need one.
Love, love, love this DIY. I love to take a hot shower when I’m congested as I feel the steam helps clear my sinuses so much. I will definitely be making some of these! Thanks!
You are welcome!! Thanks so much for the sweet comment! xo
I also like to take a bomb and place it in a custard cup and put it next to my bed at night when I have a bad cold. When the bomb starts to loose its effectiveness I have added a couple of drops to the bomb to refresh it. My grown kids love them also.
What?! This is brilliant!! I am going to use this idea when the kiddos are sick!! Thanks for sharing!
does anyone know how to put this great idea on my Pintrest account? I am not seeing a way to do this, and I’m sure I won’t be able to find it again!
Hover your mouse over the photo you want to pin. There should be a little red Pinterest button appear in the top left corner. Click on that. You can do this for any image on my site! Hope that helps! Thanks so much for the pin!! You can also install a pin it button on your tool bar so that you can pin any image even if the site doesn’t have pin it buttons on their images!!
I added 2 drops of on guard, I will let you know how they turn out!
That is a great idea! We love on guard!! My husband swears by it!
What about a bomb for the bath tub for sore muscles after a vigorous workout?
I make those, it’s a slightly more involved recipe with citric acid to make it fizzle.
Unfortunately nothing is said about eucalyptus being unsafe for those under ten. It can slow their respiration to dangerous levels. Thus should be mentioned in this post.
Thank you Beth! I was just about to come on and comment the same thing. Essential oils high [more than 40%] in 1,8-cineole can cause central nervous system and breathing problems in young children and should not be “applied to or near the faces of” or “otherwise inhaled by” children under 10 years of age.
Eucalyptus contains high amounts of the constituent 1,8-cineole. The exact amount depends on the species and/or chemotype of Eucalyptus.
For example, here is the upper range of 1,8-cineole content for various species of Eucalyptus and Rosemary:
Eucalyptus camaldulensis (cineole chemotype) – 83%
Eucalyptus globulus – 84%
Eucalyptus maidenii – 77%
Eucalyptus plenissima – 95%
Eucalyptus polybractea 92%
Eucalyptus radiata 65%
Eucalyptus smithii 78%
What could be used for sinus headache or a stuffed up head cold when you can’t use eucalyptus??
Peppermint, Spearmint, Oregano Oil (boosts the immune system too :*)
I’m so excited to find this! I have mine in the mold right now. Do I need to cover them while they dry? My molds are not oven safe (using silicone ice cube trays).
It may take a couple of days depending on the humidity in your home and the area you live!
Wondering the same thing about cover while drying! Just made a batch!
I will have to try these I get migraines a lot and I have only found a few things that work hot steamy showers or grapefruit oil. My grandmother uses essential oils in hers massages and told me about the grapefruit oil. I use to have this little thing I put some drops on and sniffed when I was getting a headache. I helps tremendously. So I have to try this!!!! Thank you for posting this!!
You are welcome! I hope you can find some relief for your migraines. They are miserable!
ok so I have a 15 old who is always sick with a runny nose type of virus if I make this is it safe for him to be able to use if I put one in the shower and steam the bathroom with it as we use so much sooth vapor bath with him
Um…it might be just me, but when I tried to print the recipe from the link you provided, all it gave me was the ingredients.
That’s all I get also
Actually, turpentine oil is very healing for the lungs. There is a holistic remedy that uses a special turpentine and honey to cure lung diseases. It’s not harmful at all, providing it is the “safe” turpentine.
I made this exactly as you suggest for my Sister with bronchitis and ear infections. She called and said she could not smell anything in the shower and we agreed that is because she is so sick. I threw one into my shower this morning and I agree, no smell. I also topped mine with 2 extra drops of eucalyptus. Has anyone been successful with this?
I also made these and couldn’t smell the essential oils. I used many more drops than the recipe called for. Any suggestions? Also, I used plastic trays that small store made mini cup cakes come in. They are the perfect size and shape. I am very disappointed with the lack of aroma, though.
The quality of the oils you use is probably the reason for this. Not all oils are the same. That is one of the reasons I love doTERRA’s oils. I have tried a few others and have to add a lot more of the oil to get the same effects as a couple of drops of doTERRA oils!
I am thinking this is due to the brand of oils. Some oils are not as high quality as others.
I am using dōTerra oils and threw 2 blocks in the hot shower and couldn’t smell anything.
Any suggestions, I followed your recipe exactly.
Thank you for sharing! I was wondering if you have ever used thyme oil.
I use thyme oil a lot for my thyroid…but I have not used it in the shower bombs yet. Should be just fine!
There’s nothing wrong with turpentine oil (applied to the skin for joint pain, muscle pain, nerve pain, and toothaches). You must be confusing it with gum turpentine. :-)
Has anyone tried this with a mold other than silicone? I don’t want to end up with impossible-to-remove chunks, but I’m wanting to try this recipe and I don’t have a silicone mold on hand and didn’t necessarily want to buy one if not totally required. Just curious! Thanks!
I am trying this now but used another recipe that called for far more essential oils (20-25 drops of each one I chose!). I decided to try repurposing my old kcups that I have cleaned out. Praying they work out! They have been drying out for about 8 hours now and they arent even close to being solid. Wish me luck!
Wende- I hope you enjoy them. Thanks.
I just rolled mine into a ball. No mold and it kept its shape
Mary- So happy that worked for you. I will have to try that next time I make them.
I’ve tried the mini cupcake pans with saran wrap. Pull up after a few hours and they come out very easily.
About how many bombs (approx 1- 1.5 in square) does a batch make?
Omg, I love this idea. I spend way too much money at Lush, they’ll make great gifts!!
Oh Thank you for sharing they turned out lovely and I must say white is lovely ive had plenty of questions from guests when they have seen them in there Jar ive gave a few to family and wow they have loved them so once again Thank you and yes I follow you your website is amazing keep at it regards from the UK
Do you print the stickers for the labels at home and just cut them yourself?
Love your blog! Going to use your ideas for favors and my best friend’s shower this fall!
I had bought the shower bombs at Lush and they don’t carry them anymore. So I tried your recipe…Well they all crumbled…what did I do wrong…do they come out hard like at Lush ?…I used the lotus oil from Hobby Lobbyabout 6 drops…I made them Sunday and took them out today all crumbled…what do you think I did wrong ? I sure would love to make them,as I love the smell of the bathroom when you use them..Thanks for any help you can tell me…Karen Wilf
I love live this recipe of oils! Thank you for sharing. One question, I put a bomb in my shower and it rinsed right down the drain. So I tried another on the ledge and it didn’t do anything? I couldn’t really smell the oils. Suggestions? You would think using them would be the easy part ha.
one of your readers shared the health issues for children. Are you going to research info and then repost your bath-bomb recipe. I am sure many Mom’s would appreciate the extra mile of research on what essential oils are safe for children and the right strength. Also the dollar store , plastic ice cube trays! saves time and energy over an overn
I will have to look into that. Great idea about the ice cube trays. I will have to try it out. Thanks.
I added 10 drops each peppermint and eucalyptus oil but my bombs do not smell in shower, they dissolved nicely though. Any ideas for my next batch?
You could try adding more drops of each.
mine did the same..10 drops and I put one in my shower and no smell. However I loved just wetting and putting these on my skin
You can add more oil if you need to.
I am having problems with powdery shower bombs. all summer no problems. Now they are powdery. adding more moister just make them expand. I am using essential oils, soda, citric acid and witch hazel. The room temp is about 65 now that it is colder weather.
Please any help will be appreciated. Thank you
Would you make and sell??
I this right now.
Could I use this in a humitifier? This would help when I’m on vacation or business trips and need some relief.
I don’t think they would do well in a humidifier. Sorry.
You can buy an Essential oils humidifier and add the oil directly to that instead, Everyone in my house has one we use the Eucalyptus for colds and lavender to help sleep
Great tips. Thanks.
Where can I buy the oils?
I think ice cube trays would work great (just for bombs not to be reused for ice). Anything you need for most crafts you can find in the GoodWill.
We made these this weekend and we had the same thing happen. They didn’t smell when we put them in the shower. I used about 10 drops of oil. You can smell them when they are done if you put your nose to them but when you put them in the shower, nothing. We baked ours at 200 for 30 mins because I wanted to keep reusing the pan so we could make a bunch of christmas gifts but now they don’t work. Such a bummer.. …
Sounds like a perfect way to enjoy the benefits of tea tree oil….
My bombs are stuck in the ice cube trays. Any advice? When I try to bend the trays to get them out they crumble! Thanks in advance!
PS I also tried to use a sharp knife around the edge to loosen up but they still crumbled. Yikes.
I made these today in the silicone molds. My question is how is the best way to get these out? Did you lay a flat pan on top of the mold and very carefully flip it over or use a knife and lift them out. Hoping all of these come out
Either of those ways should work great.
I tried this and it went perfectly until I tried using one–no scent at all. I used oils from doterra…live in Florida, so I baked them. Very disappointing. Any ideas?
I Love this idea! just made these and put them in silicon ice cube trays and put them in the freezer. I used lemon, tangerine, peppermint and lavender oils separately. I can’t wait to try one and they’re going to be an extra Christmas gift. I hope I can get them out of the trays without any issues.
These smell wonderful. I so have one problem. My mixture will not hold shape. Does anyone have any ideas to help me?
I made these this weekend. I learned a few things. When choosing silicone molds, avoid chocolate molds with any kind of intricate detail. They contribute to crumbling when you remove them. Plain square molds, such as a brownie snack mold , seemed to work best.
I would request you expand the comments about baking them and the possible impact that has. I did not see the review comments about that until AFTER I baked them. I was in a hurry trying to do this while my wife was out of the house. They are a stocking stuffer for her. It would have been nice to know that up front.
Made my second batch last night for Christmas gifts. I didn’t use quite as much water and they held together pretty well. I didn’t have silicone ice tray, but I did have an empty egg carton (foam kind)! I packed the mixture in pretty tight and gently dumped them out onto waxed paper right away. They held together well and I could continue making additional batches- One batch = one egg carton. I’m excited for Christmas!
BTW my first batch dried in about 24 hrs – not in a mold and not baked. I just gently put them on a cookie drying rack after an hour or so on the waxed paper.
I would try these
You should. They work great!
We NEVER add the oils until we use them. We make them using the baking soda and water, then bake them. We usually make enough to fill a gallon Ziploc and then store them in the cupboard until needed. When we do use them, we add the oil to the baking soda disk, then throw it in the shower. They last so much longer when stored that way! When we give them as gifts, we usually add a bottle of oil with it and some instructions.
Can u get the lq will it work the same an how much should I use
Not clear on what you are asking. Sorry.
Hi ..Thanks for the reciepe. The 200 is that f or c…. I use c and 200 is not a ‘low’ oven. Would ypy mind clarifying? Thanks again.
It is for Fahrenheit. The conversion would be 100 Celsius. Thank you!
I would like to know where I can buy quality oils to use?
I get mine here: http://www.mydoterra.com/theidearoom/#/
I have seen pretty much the same recipe and you can add a “Purify” blend or a citrus and use these in your refrigerator to absorb orders! How cool
I will have to try the Purify. Sounds great! Thanks.
I love this idea but I did not find the corrected instructions that told you when to put the oils in.
Thank you
Your suggestion of adding drops before putting them in the shower would make it hard to be a gift..
So my question is for 1 cup a baking soda how many drops?
To keep it potent how about individualy wrapping them?
The chart below says how many drop should be used for this recipe. Also, I am sure you could individually wrap them as long as no moisture gets in. Thanks.
For a sinus infection, use tea tree oil instead of peppermint (I don’t know why you’d use peppermint oil). Peppermint is good for upset stomachs, tea tree is an antibacterial/antiviral. Also, don’t just use anything that states “essential oil”, make sure it states that it’s 100%. You can find these at a health food store, like Akins. Rose oil is seriously expensive. Also, the image with the different blends states how many drops of which oil, because of differing herbal strengths. For the eucalyptus/tea tree, 10 drops eucalyptus, 5 drops of tea tree. You can also float these on water in an oil diffuser or a scentsy warmer. When my bf is all stopped up with sinus, he likes the eucalyptus/tea tree going while he’s sleeping, so he can breathe.
If I only have eculyptus and lavender essential oils could that work or should I just wait till I get the peppermint oil to make these
Can I just use eucalyptus and lavender essential oils I don’t have peppermint oil
Yes you can use those essential oils. They should work great.
Shower bomb – I place it in a little mesh bag and hang on any hook in the shower (not under the water), this way the bomb will not dissolve quickly.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing!
These sound soooo good. I’m certainly going to try making some of these.
I would like to make a small jar for gifts..can I put the oils in when mixing together? and if so will they still “perform” as they should??
Hi
How do i print the labels? I’ve subscribed to your page but cannot find where to print the labels from.
You had me when you correctly spelled the possessive form of it in “it should hold its shape”. (Recipe is awesome too!)
Brooke, thank you!
can these oils be used for sneezed candles as well? :)
Miriam, never tried it for that. sorry.
Hiii I was just wondering how quickly these break down? If I were to take a morning shower and the bomb wasn’t fully evaporated could I leave it in the bottom of the shower for a day or so? Thanks!
Gloria- It breaks a fairly quickly. I don’t think it would stay in the shower for a day. Great question. Thanks.
I was making a first batch was following the instructions and when I got to the water part, my mom came along and just dumped it in the mix. Saying it would react with the baking soda no matter how I put it in. So when I let them set, they started to puff out of the molds. I looked on another website and they used a mixer to mixer for there recipe. But does adding the water slowly actual help it to not activate the baking soda? Could I leave the baking soda out of the recipe or the replace the water with another liquid?
Carisa- That is what I found, adding the water slowly and not too much is the key. You need the baking soda for this recipe and I think water is your best bet for the liquid. Great questions. Thanks you.
I have a 2 ounce spray bottle and I add coconut oil to it and then I add my essential oils, 3 drops of each: peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree oil and lavender. Put the lid on and shake bottle to mix. I put this on my feet every night before bedtime. It does not stain my sheets/ if a person has silk sheets I am not sure about that. The bottle I got at our local store w/ organic supplies/ essential oil dept. I prefer it over the roll on bottle.
Linda- I love this. Trying it out tonight. Thank you!
