What do you do for breakfast at your house on Christmas morning? I am still trying to find a great “traditional” breakfast at our house and haven’t found one that is our favorite…yet! So this year I tried out a recipe to see if it would be our new favorite. I tried out a recipe from my friend {L} for this Cinnamon Coffee Cake. It was so yummy! The family loved it…especially my husband! So that was a good sign. But, I am still open for another {or multiple} ideas.
What breakfast traditions do you have on Christmas morning?
Thanks in advance for sharing! I love hearing the great things you are doing too!
{Only 3 more sleeps ’till Christmas!!!}
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cups butter, softened
1 cup sour cream
1/4 cup milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
Topping:
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1. Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl.
2. Blend flour mixture and butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3. Combine sour cream, milk, eggs and vanilla and blend to mix well.
4. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients.
5. Beat at medium speed with a electric mixer until smooth and fluffy.
6. Spoon half the batter into the parchment lined baking dish. Combine pecans, sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle half over batter.
7. Spread the remaining batter over topping. Sprinkle with remaining topping.
8. Bake at 350 degrees in a 9×13 pan, for 35 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

This looks so yummy, I might just have to make this Christmas morning. We haven't been married long and still need to start a traditional breakfast too. Add this to the list of debating between Snickerdoodle muffins or cinnamon rolls…
i love that you say 3 more SLEEPS! :) Oh i'm so excited…maybe because this year Adam & I will get to be Santa & Mrs. Claus! Yay for baby's first Christmas!
And I <3 coffee cake! but i've never made it…I'll have to try it
Christmas morning we always have an egg, cheese and sausage casserole and a french toast casserole. Something savory and something sweet! The beauty is they are made the night before and all you have to do is pop them in the oven on Christmas day.
That sounds awesome!! I think I will make that one to go with our other stuff that morning. We always do eggs, cheese, sausage, and hashbrowns all cooked together and made into burritos. Yummy!
We have Monkey Bread on Christmas morning. It's warm and gooey with cinnamon and sugar! The kids usually drink sparkling cider as a treat and we make hibiscus drinks (champagne and cranberry juice). Yummy!
Last year Santa left those mini boxes of sugar cereal. Since my 3 kids are 4 and under this works well. However, growing up, my dad made breakfast with pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage. It all started the year my parents got married and his 7 year old brother mistakenly invited himself over at 7 am for Christmas breakfast. Every year since then, Dad makes breakfast for my grandparents and all his siblings families that are around.
Oh my gosh, AtOneWithHim could have answered this for me! I am making a yummy french toast casserole that you make the night before. It has a to-die-for nutty topping (if you like that sort of thing). I am also making "Farmer Casserole," an egg, bacon (or ham) and cheese dish that is also made the night before. Then we will be having fresh fruit with a citrus dip. I could go on but I don't want to take up too much space. I would be happy to pass on any and all recipes if you are interested. Merry Christmas.
The Cinnamon Coffee Cake recipe looks wonderful! One question, what size pan? 8×8 or 9×13?
Hey there Amy. This has been our family's tradition for years: http://thefoodees.blogspot.com/2009/01/christmas-morning-cheesebraid.html. Some work, but so tasty.
I think a strata would be good as well, given all the protein it would give.
Looks wonderful Amy, I'm a big cinnamon fan!
My family traditionally makes the cheese, egg, bisquick casserole with the beauty of making it up on Christmas Eve. Since I got married and now have 2 under 3 we're still looking for our Christmas Morning Breakfast tradition as well. (The hubs not a big fan of the casserole.) I'm going to try this cinnamon coffee cake…thanks so much for sharing!
We are a monkey bread family, at least while the kiddos are little. I get up and make it real quick and then it bakes as we open presents – yummy.
I make Pioneer Womans cinnamon rolls. Yum! Hoping that my house gets over the flu so we can enjoy Christmas this year… and those cinnamon rolls.
I absolutely love Christmas and all the traditions this time of year brings. We always have cinnamon rolls w/ vanilla and chooclate frosting-I know, I know, as if there isn't enough sugar that day (I use the "Clone of a Cinnabun" recipe @allrecipes.) and more recently we have added monkey bread. (We are carb junkies as well) Both can be prepared the night before and we put them in to bake while we open our Santa presents. Hope you find your traditional breakfast this year…or maybe your tradition will always be having something new!
This looks absolutely delicious!
Hi Amy Maybe I missed it but what size dish/pan do you use? Thanks!
This looks SO delicious! I also just noticed your site banner (I usually just read your posts from my email.) and it is AWESOME! Love the concept of growing ideas. XO
Breakfast on Christmas is one of my favorite family traditions… my dad makes Buckwheat pancakes before we can even start opening gifts, just like his grandfather used to!
I never met his grandfather, but I love the feeling that he's there with us through the tradition he started!

thanks for this, looks too yummy for words!
That coffee cake looks amazing! We always made Big Pine French Toast with a side of scrabbled eggs on Christmas morning.

It is fun, yummy, and gets everyone involved as you "construct" the pine trees :)
Amy, this looks SO GOOD. Our family doesn't have any breakfast traditions for Christmas, but since this is my son's first Christmas (and our first as a family of three) I think this will be a great reason to start one.
Christmas Coffee Cake! Weeeee!
We have a sausage casserole that is simply amazing. The special thing about it is it is only for Christmas. Makes you want it even more. My kids are off and on every year whether or not they like it but I think I will always make it for tradition. Looking for another option to add to the menu this year. I will have to run this one by my husband– anything that you can make ahead on Christmas Eve is ideal. My present to myself for Christmas is to not be in the kitchen ALL day!
we eat breakfast burritos x-mas morning. We make them a few days before so we're not cooking that morning and we have leftovers for a few days after. we love them.
we always have pigs in a blanket.
We always have beignets cut into Christmas shapes. At this point, the kids would throw a huge fit if we didn't. Of course we have to throw in fruit, too.
my mom always makes Waffles and we top them with strawberrys and homemade whip cream!! and of course bacon and sausage!!
here in the Caribbean we do savoury instead of sweet for Christmas morning. I usually make a Venezuelan Christmas bread that has a bunch of goodies baked right in ….http://breakfastlunchdinnerandpunch.blogspot.com/search/label/bread
I also make cinnamon rolls. I whip them up in my bread maker (clone of a cinnabon recipe from allrecipes.com) the night before, and they are ready to pop in the oven the next morning!

I make an egg casserole the nite before and throw it in the oven as soon as we get up. It takes an hour to bake so then we take a break from opening and eat. It makes the morning last longer taking the "break". It's really simple. Brown some sausage, mix about 10 eggs and milk together, put the sausage and a bag of frozen hash browns (I use potatoes o'brien) in a 9×13 pour eggs over and sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Bake @350 for 1 hour, yummy! Merry Christmas!
This is completely unrelated to this post, but I have been looking over your tile pendant tutorial. I am going to be making some necklaces with my moms group in a few weeks. I see that you only used the diamond glaze to secure the bails. Other places I have read that I need to use superglue. Do you find that the diamond glaze holds the bails securely?
Thanks!
Cassandra
Hi Amy,
Here in Australia we don't traditionally do sweet for breakfast, so we start our Christmas 'eating feast' with smoked ham on toast or croissants. We keep it light cuase we have such a big lunch to look forward to. Actually, we eat all day!!
Merry Christmas,
Kerryanne
I LOVE food on Christmas we have 2 big meals, breakfast and dinner – so we go BIG for breakfast. Search "Potato Crust Quiche" "Cinnamon Rolls" and "Mindi's Sausage Bread" on my foodblog http://www.breakingthereciperut.blogspot.com you won't be disappointed:)
I really enjoy reading your blog, keep up the great work! I love cinnamon recipes and look forward to trying this one. Several years ago I saw a Pampered Chef recipe for cinnamon rolls set on a cookie sheet in rows to look like a Christmas tree. I use 2 cans of refrigerated cinnamon rolls with the same idea (5 on the bottom row, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1 on top, leaving 1 extra I fit in somewhere). After baking, we decorate the "tree" with the icing that comes with the rolls and red and green M&Ms. Usually we do some bacon alongside too. For a savory idea, my favorite egg casserole is called Charleston Breakfast Casserole on allrecipes. I do a cheese version that is great for picky eaters, and it works well made the night before. I like simple things for Christmas morning because we eat such a big lunch and I want to be in on the Santa action!
we do the egg casserole thing too since it can be made the night before. i am all for easy
This is very similar to the recipe that I make. So dang yummy!
This Christmas morning, I've already baked some beautiful blueberry muffins and I'll serve them with fruit (kabob?) and a lovely egg,ham and cheese souffle in individual ramicans. The presentation is spot on and it's a breeze to whip together. One egg beat with a fork in the ramican, add a Tb of milk. Add chopped pieces of ham. Cook on High in the microwave for 1 minute, then flip over the egg in the ramican and sprinkle the top with shredded cheddar cheese. Cook for about 30 seconds more(you don't want it to explode!) Comes out fluffy and beautiful!
We each get our own wrapped box of Christmas cereal! I love it because I don't have to cook Christmas morning and can sit back and enjoy the festivities. I am always amused at how excited my kids get for their Christmas cereal! I do miss a big, yummy breakfast so we have begun to have breakfast for dinner on Christmas Eve.
