HOW TO STORE SUGAR SCRUB
Should last up to a month sealed in an air-tight container. Be sure to scoop with clean hands to prevent spreading germs and bacteria.
This recipe uses coconut oil that is NOT melted. If it is warm where you live you might need to set the coconut oil in your fridge. If your coconut oil is too hard, let it soften before mixing it for best results.

Does this recipe make only enough for one little mason jar like in the photos? Trying to judge how many batches to make.
It makes about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup. There was a little left over from the recipe than what is shown in the jar.
Just made a second batch, but substituted coffee grounds for the pink sugar, for the anti cellulite properties of caffeine…more of a peppermint mocha. Doesn’t look as pretty but yummy just the same
I bet it smells yummy though!
Could this scrub be used on the face?
Yes!
I don’t care for coconut oil. Is there anything else I can substitute?
Almond oil is great!
Autumn, Thank you.
Do you keep this in the fridge or cool room for it to keep the whipped look?
Do you have the labels so that I can print multiple of them on one page. . like all of the same size? I bought 4 oz jars so I was hoping to print a bunch on one page. Help?!
This looks yummy. Going to try this with lemon, using yellow food coloring and lemon essential oil.
You will have to let me know how they turn out.
How did it go with the lemon? I’m looking to make some lemon scrub as Christmas presents (I live in Australia so I want a nice summery scent)?
Lemon is great as well. It smells amazing!
This looks wonderful. When should you add the peppermint oil?
What if you’re allergic to coconut?
I did a batch of the peppermint and then decided to go out on a limb…I did Wild Orange and Eucalyptus. OMG…it is amazing. I made the sugar a very light green..
What all do you use this scrub for?
I use it so sluff off dead skin and so make skin feel soft.
I wanted to ask the same thing as Erica did.. does it need to be refrigerated to stay whipped? Or will a cool room work? Also, several people have asked when do we add the peppermint?
This seems so easy and I can’t wait to try, thank you
Thank You, you will have to let me know how you like it.
Every time I click on your older Peppermint Sugar Scrub link, my computer crashes. I’ve tried 5-6 times & it keeps crashing. Some kind of virus?
Hmm….I am able to access it just fine. I will look into it thought. Thanks for making me aware of the problem.
Can’t wait to make this. Love the labels too. Suggestion on making ‘peppermint’ on the labels red or blue to make it more festive and stand out more. Also more labels per page when printing out would be great. Especially for a make and take class or party.
Can u make this with any essential oil or just peppermint?
Thanks
She has asked that we only use this for personal use so I don’t think a make and take class would be appropriate using her design and printable.
As long as you are not selling them and it is just for a party, I am totally fine with you using them. Hope you enjoy the scrub!
Question? how do you keep it from hardening?
we just warm ours up in the microwave for a couple of seconds and it softens back up
I have some that I forgot about and it still is fine after it hardens.
Thank You. Good to know.
If you keep it in an airtight container it should not harden.
This was a great recipe my daughter in laws and I just made up 20 batches and used all different oils. All of them were wonderful except I don’t recommend the jasmine, it is too light of a scent and the coconut from the oil takes over. Thanks for the idea!
That is wonderful. Glad you are enjoying them.
Can I use just a regular wisk?
Yes but, it may take longer. Thanks and Enjoy!
Hi Amy,
I am making sugar scrubs for a small little retail shop we have in Sykesville Md. Should I add any type of preservative? I am not concerned about selling these within a month but I just am not sure it they will be used up in a month after they are bought. :) . Is that an issue? Should I have an expiration on a label i create with ingredients and weight on the bottom of my cute little jar? I LOVE you blog, what are your thoughts? Thank you.
I see no reason they wouldn’t last much longer than a month. There is nothing in there that’s going to spoil. Sugar lasts for years on shelves and coconut oil is used a preservative sometimes.
Ginget- It should last up to 3 months. Just make sure that your hands are clean when getting it out of the jar. Cross contamination could spoil it.
The scrub could be scooped from the jar with disposable small wooden spatulas.
Janet- Thats a great idea.
I love this scrub! I live in Florida and it’s always hot here. I made it this morning, but it’s a little soupy. Should I add more sugar and less oil?
Beth, I think I would try that next time you make it.
Can you use peppermint extract instead of the peppermint essential oil’s ?
Stephanie, You can use extract but, it would be only for the scent. Peppermint Essential Oil has more benefits that just the scent. You can find out more about it’s benefits here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003I6TOM8/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B003I6TOM8&linkCode=as2&tag=thidro-20&linkId=7ZRHB5YOVWLWYY6T&th=1
Last year I made these and their was a template for the round circle with the whipped sugar scrub on it….and it had pink on it……do you still have that. They were so cute last year. Thanks so much for posting this recipe.
Thanks for posting this recipe. I made this last year and every one loved it. Last year you had a little round template with the whipped sugar scrub printed on it. Do you still have that template by chance?
Am I understanding I am to use 1 cup of sugar in total? Thanks!
I replied to an email but might be a no reply.
I’m interested in making the sugar scrubs too. I’m confused on the liquid coconut oil vs solid.
Do you use almond oil in all recipes except for maybe coconut lime sugar scrub…I really wanted to make this one but the peppermint recipe sounded good for Christmas. I had read comments that the solid coconut oil gets hard.
Thanks
Does the red food coloring stain your skin at all? That was my only concern. Have not made this yet but really want to! Making it as a gift and don’t want their skin stained when they use it!
It really doesn’t. Thanks!
Hello,
Could you please clarify what type of sugar to use? The link doesn’t seem to work of me. Thank you!
Robin- granulated sugar
Do you use Fractionated Coconut Oil or Regular Coconut Oil?
Thanks
I made this recipe, the only problem is that it smells only coconut! Not peppermint at all :( Im wondering if I bought the right coconut oil…anyone?
Some brands of coconut oil may be more powerful smelling. You can switch to an almond oil and it should work just as well and not smell overpowering.
Thanks I will try it with another oil!
I used organic bought from walmart and cant smell the coconut at all.
Atrull-Great idea!
How long can be stored?
Rivianna, It can be stored up to 3 months as long it is sealed in an airtight container.
Hello, for all time i used to check weblog posts here in the early hours in the break
of day, since i like to find out more and more.
Hello, I stumbled upon your blog and wow, this recipe looks great! My friends and I own a small nail spa and we would love to feature this scrub for the enjoyment of our clients. I just want to ask if there is any way I can use the photos you published here (really nice photos btw) for a small menu, so they just know what the scrub looks like, as well as on our facebook page? Thanks and hope to hear from you soon, and thanks for sharing this recipe.
Hi !! Love the recipe , but my mixture didn’t whip…I live in India and it’s usually hot here….Solidified the coconut oil in fridge (it’s liquid in room temperature)…When I started beating it (with hand beater) it just didn’t become light and fluffy…It’s all liquid….Any suggestions? And I used granulated sugar… Xoxo
Divvya- Not sure what went wrong. Did you get the measurements right? So sorry.
I made this without seeing your recipe. A mix of lavender with the peppermint was nice. Then I added slightly fine coffee grounds to work on cellulites.
Thanks for sharing
Great tip. Glad you liked the recipe.
Love this recipe! Made it for Christmas presents last year and was a big hit! Amazing for all over body! Even my 15 year old son likes it! Made another big batch today!
Debbie- So happy your family enjoyed them!
I don’t really like coconut oil as it leaves my skin feeling greasy and I don’t like the scent. Do you think this would work with grapeseed oil (almost no scent and soaks in quickly)?
Yes! I use grapeseed and almond oil quite a bit in sugar scrubs!
Beth-Grapeseed Oil should work the same. Great idea!
Great recipe I’m going to make! I was just wondering when do you add the essential oil? Great work! Thanks.
Going to make this recipe! Just wondering when do you add the essential oil? Thanks!!
I just add it before whipping it up!
If you decide that the scent isn’t strong enough after making it are you able to go back and add more essential oil drops? Also how long is the shelf life of this? How many ounces does this make and what’s the total cost to make this? Btw you’re such a creative genius!
Xo
Also, if I wanted to make a cinnamon or a cinnamon vanilla one or just the vanilla one, what would I use instead of the peppermint essential oil?
Xo💖✨
Bambi- You can use Vanilla Extract or Essential Oil and Cinnamon Essential Oil.
Bambi- I think it would be find to add more essential oil if needed. The shelf life is about 3 months in a sealed container.
I made a batch of this and I think I’ll double to fit into 8 oz jars because it only goes halfway. I also didnt have Peppermint essential oil and tried extract. It smells nice but its not long lasting so I think I’ll get some essential oils. I also added 2 drops of Vitamin E oil to make it last longer. I love the feel of it when I tested on my forearm. I tried olive oil before and it was way too greasy and like the coconut oil much better! This is a pretty versatile recipe and I can add different kinds of colors and essential oils. Thank you!
Monica- Glad you liked it.
Won’t the food colouring dye your skin or the tub if you use it in the tub?
It shouldn’t but if you are concerned you can use fruit juice to dye it naturally.
could you tell me where I can find jars like these?
Kelly- These are just small canning jars that can be found at Walmart.
This is awesome! I am going to make some for my fellow teachers. They’ll love this!!
I think I’ll make some peppermint, lemon, and lavender. Lavender will be a good soothing, calming scent, and I know many of us are stressed out COMPLETELY this time of year!
Thank you for sharing the recipe!!
Allyson- So happy you found this useful! Thanks for following along!
I don’t like the smell of coconut oil. Is there another option or a type of coconut oil that is scent free? Thanks in advance
Nicole- Grapeseed Oil is a great alternative.
I am allergic to coconut oil, what could I use instead?
Michelle- You can use grapeseed oil.
Oh, my..this is amazing!! This will make a great gift!
Kristyn- Thank you so much!
This scrub sounds great! If I substitute almond oil for the coconut, will the finished product still have that whipped look?
Gina- It should work just the same!
Hi love this recipe! What do u think about super finely ground peppermint candy to mix in? Would that be ok or spoil the scrub? Thanks! Ur great!
Sarah- I have tried that and it works great.
Nice..will be making
Laura- So happy you are going to be giving this a try.
Do you have a recipe to make a larger batch or do you just double/triple/etc? Looking to make multiple at a time. I know sometimes when you multiply recipes they sometimes don’t turn out the same. Thanks! 😊
Robin- You can just double or triple the recipe!I have doubled it and it worked great.
Can I use fractionated coconut oil?
Kristyn- This recipe uses coconut oil that is NOT melted. If it is warm where you live you might need to set the coconut oil in your fridge. If your coconut oil is too hard, let it soften before mixing it for best results. Hope this answers your question.
Nice recipe where can I buy the jars?
Grady-They are just canning jars. I got mine at Walmart.
No matter the age, this makes a great gift for anyone!
Natalie- I agree!
Who couldn’t use some pampering right now?! Love this stuff!
Kristyn- It smells so good too!
Thanks so much for the recipe, we are going to make it for Christmas gifts. I love your polka dot spatula, do you know where you bought that?? I love polka dots, they are so fun!!
