I was recently invited by Minute Maid to take a small part in their #doingood campaign and their ongoing mission of taking a stand for parents. It seems that parents everywhere are dealing with the pressure to be perfect parents, whether that pressure comes from within, negative comments from others, or comparing themselves to impossible social media standards. Parents may find themselves asking “Am I doing a good job?”
Now, I don’t know about you, but I have felt the pressure to be the perfect parent. Many times, I am left feeling inadequate and overwhelmed. There have been some days where I feel like my best just may not be good enough…and I am going to bet that most…if not all of you parents have had similar thoughts and feelings.
Last week I was able to spend some time in Atlanta at Coca Cola Headquarters. Minute Maid hosted a beautiful discussion about parenting with Olympian Missy Franklin, her parents and a few other inspiring mothers.
The five-time Olympic medalist, Missy Franklin, is helping Minute Maid celebrate great parenting everywhere. She even surprised her own parents earlier this year with a heartfelt #doingood message. Grab the tissues and watch below!
We shared stories and experiences we have had thus far in our parenting journey. And although we all come from different backgrounds and have had different parenting challenges, I came away feeling so connected and uplifted. It reminded me that we are all doing so much better than we sometimes think we are.
Through the #doingood campaign, Minute Maid is reminding parents of all the wonderful things, big and small, they do to make a positive difference in their children’s lives.
And though we may not all be raising Olympians, we need to be reminded that when you put good in, you get good out! Don’t you just love that? I love how real and important that message is for all of us to hear, especially in a world with a lot of negative and over-saturated social media messages.
I felt so inspired by the messages shared, I wanted to come home and start putting this into practice. I wanted to spread the message to those around me, who may be feeling the pressure of not being good enough.
I created a simple printable that I could use to recognize a few of my personal friends, who I felt were doing great things. I attached the printables to some Minute Maid drinks and dropped them on their doorsteps anonymously.
I also took it a step further by sharing this message with perfect strangers. You guys…this was so much fun! I printed off several of the #doingood printables and then I left them in several places around my city.
How fun is that?! I left them in places that most parents would be able to find them…random places and in a few stores…
a package of diapers
children’s cold medicine
carton of Minute Maid Orange Juice
park bench
gas station pump
bus stop
in a grocery cart
on a mini van
box of cold cereal
canister of formula
on a package of pacifiers
at the library
at the soccer field
on the baseball bleachers
It was so fun anticipating who would find them and what their reaction would be. I am hoping that in some small way it will brighten their day and remind them that they really are doing the best job that they can. Parenting is hard…and everyone needs a little uplifting and support from time to time. All it takes is a little time and some action! I had so much fun, I think I will just keep several in my purse and leave them here and there.
And of course I would love for you to start sharing the message with those around you. I am sharing the printable in hopes that you might feel inclined to help spread the message of #doingood. To download and/or print the #doingood cards simply click on the link below:
