Silhouette Cameo

Guess what I have been playing with this week? The sleek new Silhouette Cameo! I feel so lucky to have been given a Cameo to test drive and I have to tell you…I LOVE it. Plus it is super pretty! I had a couple of projects already in mind and was not sure which one to would be the chosen one for the maiden Cameo voyage.  But since I have been knee deep in grey paint and all that comes with remodeling our Master Bedroom and Bath…which I will reveal later…the project for the Master Bedroom won out.

And I am really happy with the final outcome.  But, let me tell you a little bit about the new Silhouette Cameo and some of my favorite features of it.

cameo 1

1. The Cameo can cut up to 12 inches of media so I no longer have to cut down a 12”x12” piece of scrapbook paper again.  It also gives you the ability to work easily on those bigger project that you might need to do.

2.  The Cameo has a new adjustable blade.  Instead of three blades, there is just one blade that can be adjusted to the correct cutting ability depending on the media you are cutting.  And since it just stays in one place, no more lost blades.  All you have to do is turn the dial to the size you need.

3.  The Cameo has adjustable rollers that guide your media into your Silhouette machine.  I can not tell you how many times I have had to load and unload my media to get it to load properly.  Now it is easily adjusted by unlocking this little lever and moving the rollers into a different position depending on the size of your media.  And…if your media gets stuck, no more pulling to get the media out.  Simply release the lever and the media slides out.

4.  The Cameo has a pause button.  LOVE this! Perfect for the times when you notice that you made a mistake at the last minute or notice that the media has not been fed properly or cutting how you want it.  This button saves time, frustration and your media from being ruined and possibly having to start over.

5.  The Cameo is a lot quieter when it is cutting.

6. If you already have the Silhouette SD, the transfer process was super easy.  I simply installed the program with the CD they sent me and everything just transferred over.  I did not have to do a thing.  All my previous files are now available for me to play with or use again on my new Cameo.

I was given a Silhouette Cameo machine to test and review.

I was in no way obligated to give a positive review.

But I really love this machine.

This looks great but so did the regular Silhouette and honestly, all I have ever had is problems with it :/ I did just contact Customer Support about the blade not cutting and was sent one of the nifty new blades (they are cross-platform I guess) and must say that it seems a lot easier than the 3 that came with the regular machine.

  3. Ana Victoria says

Just love it! Im planning to get one, and was comparing machines of this type for my projects! can’t wait to buy it :), great review! thanks

  4. says

Hi Amy! Thanks for a great (honest) review. I just received my Cameo today. I’m excited to use it. But, I have a question that I can’t find an answer for. Do you have any idea how thick the medium can be? For example, I would love to be able to cut self adhesive craft foam. Do you know what I’m talking about?

If you don’t know, that’s fine. I don’t expect you to. I was just hoping :) Thanks again!

  5. Paula F says

Hi Amy. I was wondering about how to use your promo code. You cannot order the Cameo from Silhouette America just yet so I was wondering how and where to use your promo code.

  6. Delores H says

I would be so excited to win this. I am looking for a new machine that will meet my need.

  7. wendy says

Cant wait till they arrive in South Africa I am changing from the Cricut, because I cant use sure cut alot anymore

    • Heleen Rossouw says

      Hi Wendy.

I live in Cape Town (South Africa) and received mine about 10 days ago. We returned from holiday yesterday and I am playing around with it non-stop. Still got a lot to learn as I did not have any other cutting machine in the past, therefore all is very new.

If you want to wait for suppliers is SA you are going to wait a long time, around here all stores just believe in the cricut and that were not enough for me, I ordered it online from USA, paid just below R300 ($37) import duties that is very reasonable to me, shipping were a lot buy worth it.

        Hi Wendy

I am very eager to buy a cameo as I have specific ideas for what I want to use it for…but I can’t find anyone who will do a demonstration for me. Would you be willing to let me see how yours works?I am also based in Cape Town and I could do with some advice from someone who has figured out the ropes all by herself.

If not, maybe you know of someone who does demonstrations?

        Thank you

        • Nicole van Rooyen says

Hi Heleen I made the same mistake and said Wendy when I meant Heleen…oops…sorry

    • Cecelia says

Hi wendy – I see that scrap-a-doodles has got stock in of the Silhouette Cameo – enjoy

  8. says

Hello I really want a silhouette cameo but my question is will it be able to cut paper piecing files by myscrapchick, scrapping bug designs and other businesses like them?

  10. Rebecca says

I am so excited that silhouette came out with this! I would LOVE one! Thanks for the giveaway!

  11. Cecelia says

My cameo is on order and cannot wait for it to arrive – had a look at the e-craft aswell, but the silhouette Cameo won!!!! Now I dont have to convert all my gsd and silhouette files to another program – whoo hoo – thanks hubby for making my new toy possible

  12. says

I have been looking at this machine (I own 4 cricuts!) And I am very intrigued! I would like to know where the online store is for Silhouette to buy files. I have been searching for about half an hour for this and haven’t found it yet. I was surprised that this is not even listed on Silhouettes site! If you have the information I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you,

    • Ursula says

      Hi Deb,
The online store is on your silhoutte machine, if you don’t own one i don’t think you can purchase online. Sorry! Ursula from South Africa ( I hope i am mistaken, keep trying)

  13. Debby says

do you know anything about using the Cameo and the blade depth when using sticky flock template material. Do you know if there is a wrong way to place the blade in the holder. does the larger black wing on the holder need to be in a certain position. I am having difficulty with it cutting the holes. I have had some luck setting the blade at twice the depth for regular template material and I hope this is not causing a problem with my machine.

    • Jogry says

I am interested, does the machine take 240V. I know that the american wiring is diffirent. I live on the island of Bali,Indonesia and we have the same electricity as in the Netherlands.

  14. Alie says

I’m getting a little confused with trying to figure Cricut vs. Silhouette and what they do. My big question is are you restriced with the Cameo to only the images you buy online or the ones that come with it? I would love to be able to scan a picture in that an artist friend of mine did and be able to cut it out.

    • says

Silhouette has a designer package that you can buy to upgrade that will allow you to use and make your own designs and download compatible files to use with their cameo.

  15. Elize Breytenbach says

I also need some one to do a demonstration on the Silhouette Cameo. Bought me one but not sure of everything.

  16. Debbie says

    Help please!
I jut received my cameo and was happily playing around, when suddenly I cannot seem to load the cutting mat, I load it and then it says “E UNLOAD”

What does this mean, and what am I doing wrong

  17. DG says

Ok, so I have owned the Silhouette for about two weeks now. It seems like a piece of crap! I have wasted almost a whole roll of vinyl and have yet to successfully cut anything. Customer Service has been of no help to me! Any suggestions?

  18. Liz says

Can you design an image in Adoble Illustrator and then either export it to the Cameo program or cut straight from illustrator with the cameo?

  19. Jen says

I really want this machine, but after watching some of the videos, I am worried I won’t figure out how to use it.
How did you ladies learn all of the functions?

  20. Elaine Reynolds says

I have had a Silhouette Cameo three weeks now. I absolutely HATE it. I have not been able to figure it out at all. I keep hearing how easy it is. I’ve conquered many things so I don’t understand why but I’m wishing I’d bought the Cricut and never heard of this thing. Right now it’s giving me the error message : E Unload. I’ve spent an hour trying to find what that means and what I’m suppose to do.

  21. Nan says

The unload E is what the screen displays once the paper is loaded. It then switches to E unload so if that’s what you want to do, just press the center button and it unloads. In other words, it is ready to cut now.

    • Nan says

There are numerous YouTube videos that explain most everything you can do. Start by searching for how to load the machine, then how to cut a shape. I learned in less than a few hours and can do pretty much everything.

Or you can google how do I (insert whatever you want to do) on my cameo. Los of blogs out there with the answers.
