Heather here from FamilyVolley.com with a few summer road trip ideas for your family.
Summer is a time for family vacations which means road trips! Road trips teach families great things. They are the perfect place to teach adaptation and negotiation skills. A detour, flat tire, stubborn sibling, all give us opportunities to navigate an unplanned situation which is really important in life. Aside from the unexpected comes the challenge of car boredom. What can we do to help pass the car trip time?
You have heard of the license plate game, but here are a few other Road Trip Games for you and your family.
Car Trip ABC’s
Pick a category such as breakfast cereals, vegetables, crayon colors, or disney characters. Go backwards through the letters of the alphabet and have each person come up with items beginning with that letter.
While you are at it, learn to sing the alphabet song backwards. It is a challenge and will take up time as you drive. Plus, it is cool to be able to sing your ABC’s backwards.
Going on a Road Trip
This game is all about your memory. One person starts with the letter “A” and says, “I am going on a road trip and I am going to take ________.” They fill in the blank with an object that starts with the letter “A.”
The next person says, “I am going on a road trip and I am going to take_________.” They need to say an object that starts with the letter “B” AND say the object that was said that starts with the letter “A” before them. So, by the end, the last person will be saying an object that starts with “Z” plus they will need to repeat all the other things that everyone has said before them.
Curious Questions
Car trips are a great place to get to know each other better. Ask fun and interesting questions and let each person in the car answer them. Kids and adults will love this one. Here are a few to get you started
Describe your dream vacation?
If you could be any famous person, who would you be, and why?
What are you most afraid of and why?
If you could be in a Disney Movie, which movie would it be?
Finish this Song
This game works a bit better with older children. Have someone start by singing/saying a line in a song. The next person has to start their line with the last word of the song line the person before them said. Keep going until someone can’t think of a line to say.
You can play this same game with stories. Have each person tell one line of a story. Watch how it unfolds.
Who Did It?
This was my very favorite game to play with my family.
Have someone make up a mystery such as “The Case of the Missing Bicycle.” There are two suspects in your mystery. Tell their alibis. One of the suspects has to be guilty so be sure you throw in a few sneaky clues as to who that is. For example, “Suspect A lived in Arizona and was out for a walk in August and the sidewalk was covered in snow.” It would be obvious that Suspect A was guilty because there wouldn’t be snow in Arizona in August.
Once both alibis are told, everyone in the car gets to guess who did it.
“Where are they Going?”
Have everyone choose a car on the road with you. Then each person makes up a story about where the care they chose is going. Make up all the details and have fun story telling.
The great part about these types of games it that they take time to play and don’t need any resources.
Add these to conversations, bathroom stops and food breaks and your road trip time will fly by.
