Silhouette Cameo

Guess what I have been playing with this week? The sleek new Silhouette Cameo! I feel so lucky to have been given a Cameo to test drive and I have to tell you…I LOVE it. Plus it is super pretty! I had a couple of projects already in mind and was not sure which one to would be the chosen one for the maiden Cameo voyage.  But since I have been knee deep in grey paint and all that comes with remodeling our Master Bedroom and Bath…which I will reveal later…the project for the Master Bedroom won out.

And I am really happy with the final outcome.  But, let me tell you a little bit about the new Silhouette Cameo and some of my favorite features of it.

cameo 1

1. The Cameo can cut up to 12 inches of media so I no longer have to cut down a 12”x12” piece of scrapbook paper again.  It also gives you the ability to work easily on those bigger project that you might need to do.

2.  The Cameo has a new adjustable blade.  Instead of three blades, there is just one blade that can be adjusted to the correct cutting ability depending on the media you are cutting.  And since it just stays in one place, no more lost blades.  All you have to do is turn the dial to the size you need.

cameo 2

3.  The Cameo has adjustable rollers that guide your media into your Silhouette machine.  I can not tell you how many times I have had to load and unload my media to get it to load properly.  Now it is easily adjusted by unlocking this little lever and moving the rollers into a different position depending on the size of your media.  And…if your media gets stuck, no more pulling to get the media out.  Simply release the lever and the media slides out.

cameo 5  cameo 6

4.  The Cameo has a pause button.  LOVE this! Perfect for the times when you notice that you made a mistake at the last minute or notice that the media has not been fed properly or cutting how you want it.  This button saves time, frustration and your media from being ruined and possibly having to start over.

cameo 3

5.  The Cameo is a lot quieter when it is cutting.

6. If you already have the Silhouette SD, the transfer process was super easy.  I simply installed the program with the CD they sent me and everything just transferred over.  I did not have to do a thing.  All my previous files are now available for me to play with or use again on my new Cameo.

cameo 4

Now for the other fun part…You can get your very own Cameo today using the promo code…IDEAROOM!

By using the Promo Code IDEAROOM to purchase your own new Cameo and your choice of starter kit all for $299!

All opinions are mine.

I was given a Silhouette Cameo machine to test and review.

I was in no way obligated to give a positive review.

But I really love this machine.

Safe Child Labels–Silhouette Tattoo Promotion

It is time once again for another Silhouette Promotion!  This time we were given some Silhouette Temporary Tattoo Paper to test out.

Instead of going with just a regular picture tattoo, I thought it might be fun to make a tattoo that was cute and functional at the same time.  Since we spend a bit of time at amusement parks and other touristy attractions in the summer time, I thought it would be nice to have a way to identify my youngest kids just in case they were to get lost.  I usually stick a business card with my husband’s cell phone number on it and a note to call the number if someone happens to find my lost child.  But the problem with that is that they child may not know or remember to give the stranger the card and it might never be found, despite us practicing it before heading out.  This way the information is right there.

tattoo found 2a

I also made some that had her name on it along with the phone number.  The fun part is that you can totally customize the tattoos with your own personal message.

To make your tattoos simply follow these easy directions:

1.  Download your favorite Tattoo shapes and pictures.

2.  Upload them to your Silhouette software program on your computer.

3.  Add text and modify colors to your liking.

4.  When images are how you would like them, make a mirrored image of the shapes and the texts.

To do this select Object from the top menu bar.

Then select Transform.

And mirror options (I chose mirror image right).

5.  Then print your images onto your tattoo paper (the white one) with your printer.  Be sure to select photo paper as your paper and the size 8.5 x 11.

tattoo_studio_program copy

6.  Then when it has printed out, take your clear sticky transfer paper (with the green background).

7.  Peel off the corner and line it up so that it fits perfectly in alignment with your tattoo paper.  Carefully peel away backing and smooth it onto the tattoo paper.  Do this carefully and then press it on with your rubber scraper.

Then load paper into your Silhouette Machine and cut it.  I cut mine at a speed of 3 and a thickness of 25.  It will require a double cut to go through both layers.  Then simply peel off the plastic layer and place the tattoo on the skin so that you just see the blank backside of the paper.  Hold a wet washcloth to the back of the tattoo for a few seconds and the tattoo should easily peel away from the backing and stick to the skin.

And guess what?  You can even make these without a Silhouette machine if you don’t have one or it is not in the budget right now.  Simply print the tattoos onto the paper and then cut them out the old fashioned way.  A little more work and effort, but hey…it works!

Silhouette Electronic Cutting Tool

dream pillow close

For this month’s promotion I was given some heat transfer material to play with.   I have been wanting to prettify my daughter’s pillowcase since it was just plain green.  This is the pillow she sleeps with at night and is not usually a pillow that is used on top of her made bed.  I just put it there to display it for the picture.

I used this white flocked heat transfer material that has some soft texture to it.

In my Silhouette program I typed up the word “dream” using the Aharoni font.   I enlarged the letters so that they measured about 3 inches in height.  Then when using the heat transfer material you need to remember to “mirror your image” so that it will iron on correctly and not be backwards.  I cut mine with the blue cutting tip on a speed of 3 and the thickness at 33.  I placed the heat transfer material into the cutting machine without the mat.  Be sure that the plastic coated side is placed down as you feed it into the machine.

dream pillow 6

Then I peeled away the heat transfer material that I did not need so that all that was left was the letters.  Take your iron and lightly iron the front of the material for just one second or two where you want your material to be on your item.  This just sets it in place.  Then I placed a cloth between the plastic layer and ironed the material onto the pillowcase.  Be sure your iron is not too hot.  Do not use it on a heat setting hotter than the cotton setting.  When it is securely ironed on, gently peel away the plastic layer.

dream pillow 5

That’s really all there is too it!  Pretty simple.  This is a quick and easy project that anyone can do!  And the possibilities for this material are endless.

So, if you are still wanting to get yourself a silhouette machine, now would be a great time to get one.

DIY Magnetic Silly Faces

silly faces 5

I recently shared this fun tutorial for Silly Magnetic Faces over on I {heart} Nap Time last week as part of a fun week of Silhouette inspired projects.  I know not many of you are able to have a Silhouette machine, but the fun thing about this tutorial, is that you don’t need to have one to be able to make these for your little ones.  All you would have to do is simply cut them out the old fashioned way.  To learn exactly how I made them you can follow along with the tutorial below.

I just recently was able to try out Silhouette’s Printable Magnet Paper for the first time.  I thought about making something more practical like cute labels for my family’s organization board, but I went for something a little more fun and creative…Magnetic Silly Faces!

magnet paper[1]

They were an instant hit at our house.  My daughter loved laughing at herself and the various ways she could make herself silly.  The best part is how easy it was to make and put together.

silly faces final 3

I simply started by taking a close up picture of my daughter and then downloaded it into my Photoshop program.  I was sure to take the picture with a white background behind her (a wall) to provide minimal distraction in the finished product.  Make sure to have the person looking at you straight on.

Crop your picture so that it is measures 8 x 10 and print it out onto a non-glossy photo paper.  Set it aside.

*You could make this smaller depending on what you would like, I wanted mine to fit in an 8×10 inch frame without a matte.  Do what works best for your needs.  You could also print it out so that it fits into a fun tin carrying case like they sell at scrapbook store for a more portable version.

In the Silhouette program I was able to download all of these fun shapes to use to make the silly faces.  With my daughters picture still up in the edit window of Photoshop, I measured how big I needed each object using the ruler grid.  For example, to determine how big the glasses needed to be, I measured where I wanted the end of the glasses to come on each side of her face and determined that the glasses needed to be 7 inches across.  Then I measured the height to be 3 inches from above the eyes to where I wanted them to sit below the eyes.

After determining the measurements needed for each item, I adjusted the sizes of each object accordingly.  It seems like a long process, but was actually pretty easy with this new Silhouette program.

*One thing I learned is to make them a little bit bigger than the actual measurements.  I wish I made mine each a bit bigger.  I will make the adjustments when I make these for the rest of my kids {because apparently it wasn’t fair that I only made one for someone else…imagine that!?!}

When you have everything ready, print them from the Silhouette program onto the Magnet paper in your regular printer.  Make sure that you load the magnet paper properly so that it will print on the white side.  Then place it onto your cutting mat feed that into your Silhouette SD machine and line it up according to your registration marks.  Cut the paper.  I set machine to a cutting speed of 4, a thickness of 22 and used the yellow cutting blade and it worked perfectly.

silly faces cutting

Now that the silly face pieces are cut you can take your photo and cut it so that it fits into a picture frame.  Then I took some sheet metal, that I had leftover from the same organization board I mentioned and linked to in the first paragraph, and traced the picture on it to know exactly where to cut it.

silly faces 2

Cut the sheet metal out with some tin snips.  Be very careful with this as the metal can be pretty sharp on the edges.

silly face 3

Place the metal sheet into the frame and place the picture on top of it.  This makes it so you can store the silly face pieces on the back when they are not in use and keeps them nicely hidden away.

silly face storage

Pretty fun and simple right??  I thought so!  There are so many different ways you could use these to entertain your kids depending on the different sizes you made them and whether you wanted them to be portable or not!

silly faces final 2

This one was my daughter’s favorite.  She thought it looked just like me!  I am hoping the jury is still out on that one!

         silly faces final 4

And when the picture is not being used to make silly faces, you can use it as a regular photo to add some fun to your child’s room.  Pretty versatile right?  Thanks Silhouette for providing us with another fun media to play and create with!!
