Looking for a great Bath Salt Recipe? We are sharing our Homemade Bath Salts so you can learn how to make homemade bath salts for easy and fun gift ideas!
HOMEMADE BATH SALTS
Homemade Bath Salts are really easy to make and just take a few simple, easy to find ingredients. And, if you like to take baths, you know how yummy smelling they can make your bath water. Plus the salts have some great healing and soothing aspects for your skin.
CAN YOU USE EXTRACTS IN A HOMEMADE BATH SALTS?
You can use an extract in a bath salts. However, I prefer to use essential oils. Essential oils tend to be more pure and have a longer lasting smell and benefits because they are not diluted with other fillers and additives. Be sure you are using food safe and food grade versions of either an extract or an essential oil as you are placing them on the skin. The skin will absorb them into your body so you want high quality oils and/or extracts in your scrubs and salts.
HOW TO USE HOMEMADE BATH SALTS
You can use bath salts in a bath or a shower. Get your skin wet with warm water, then scoop a small amount of the salts into your fingers and scrub your damp or wet skin. You can use your hands, a washcloth or even a scrub loofah to increase the exfoliation. Scrub the skin in a circular motion to cover the entire area. Then rinse the area with warm water to wash away the excess salt for smooth and soft exfoliated skin.
HOW TO STORE HOMEMADE BATH SALTS
Be sure to keep your bath salts in a well sealed container. Bath salts should always be scooped with a clean utensil, spoon or clean hands. Keep the bath salt out of the humidity. So don’t store it in the shower. Store it in a dryer area and bring in the shower when you are going to use it and then return it to a different area so it can last as long as possible without spoiling.
HOW LONG DO HOMEMADE BATH SALTS LAST?
A bath salt with high quality ingredients should last up to to 3 months. Keep them sealed in proper containers and don’t introduce bacteria into them with dirty hands. Keep them out of the humidity so the salts and the oils do not spoil.
I LOVE homemade gifts that are functional AND pretty at the same time. I like to give things that I would actually like to receive as a gift myself…like this Homemade Bath Salts Gift Set.
These DIY Bath Salts also contain some awesome doTerra Essential Oils. These essential oils also have multiple benefits and uses depending on the type of Essential Oil you use.
INGREDIENTS FOR HOMEMADE BATH SALTS
HOMEMADE BATH SALTS RECIPE
Homemade Bath Salts Recipe
Looking For A Great Bath Salt Recipe? We Are Sharing Our Homemade Bath Salts So You Can Learn How To Make Homemade Bath Salts For Easy And Fun Gift Ideas!
Ingredients
- 3 cups Epsom Salts
- 2 cups Baking Soda
- 1 cup Rock Salt
- 4-5 drops Essential Oils 2-4 drops
- 1-2 drops coloring optional
Instructions
-
Add all the ingredients and mix together in a mixing bowl.
-
If you want more than one scent and color, separate into different bowls before adding the color and scent. Then you can have 2-3 different choices to choose from.
-
Let the bath salts dry for 24 hours before placing them into your decorative jars.
-
Pour 1/4 cup of Bath Salts into a warm or hot bath and enjoy!
I chose not to use any coloring as I wanted all of the jars to be similar and fresh and clean looking. I used doTerra’s Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint Essential Oils for my jars. You follow the directions for each flavor of Bath Salt and then just add the Essential Oil of your choice.
I love using doTERRA’s Essential Oils and have shared so many fun ways we love to use them in our home. There are so many amazing benefits of essential oils depending on which oil you use. So depending on how you are feeling, you can create these Bath Salts and add the essential oils of your choice for a desired effect!

I LOVE my DoTerra oils! I use them ALL THE TIME. I make my own homemade cleaning solution, (1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup water, 1 tsp Borax, and 30 drops essential oil), and change the oil depending on the season. My favorites are Purify or Lemon/Lavendar for the spring/summer and OnGuard for fall/winter. I also LOVE to put Citrus Bliss in my bath scrubs.
My favorite scent is Lavender!!
Love essential oils, especially for cleaning! Definitely going to have to try your homemade bathsalts recipe. Soaking in a hot tub is my nightly escape : )

Where did you get these great old fashioned milk bottles/with caps?
Thank you for posting the recipe on bath salts. I was wondering why you have baking soda as part of the recipe. Thank you for for a great post.
Baking soda is used in bath salts because of it’s cleansing ability and anti-fungal properties!
Is the baking soda necessary? Or just an added benefit?
is it necessary to use epsom salt? is there no substitute?
Epsom Salt seems to work best!
Is epsom salt tat is magnesium sulfate harmful 4 skin??
Menus of spa services can include massages,
body wraps, facials, salon services, and even guided meditations.
The second type of spa is those that take the fitness of the client
into consideration. Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after these treatments are its main benefits.
Where can I find the carton and milk jugs used in this craft?
The jars came in the little carton (4 pack). They are Starbucks Frappucino bottles and I found them at Target. Just covered the box with some fun paper!
I have used the Starbucks carrier before. How did you decorate!? Love it!
I will be trying this recipe…thank you! But I will be using Young Living Essential Oils….top quality oils!
I can’t wait to try this recipe!! Wondering if there’s another place I could find bottles similar to the ones used here since I’m wanting to make quite a few. :)
I like to use frappucino bottles or buy my bottles at hobby lobby. They usually have a large selection!
If you intend to present the bath salts as gifts, be sure to store them in a stoppered and labeled container to keep out moisture. if you decide a part is a cup: it would be six cups sea salt, 3 cups espsom salts, and one cup baking soda.
I have looked and looked and looked….. You don’t actually list the directions for the bath salts. The recipe is there, explanation of the different oils and their benefits, where you got your jars, link for labels and other product listing, but you don’t actually say how to make the salts. Am I just blind?
How do you let them dry for 24 hours? Do you leave them out in an open container?
Yes just in the bowl uncovered. Thanks and Enjoy!
I use these ingredients in my bath and mix it up right before. But my question is wont the baking soda remove the aroma of the oils if it sits in a jar for awhile?
Wow I love this idea. I love giving gifts that is something personal & made out of love. I’ll definitely will try to make them. Thanks for sharing :)
THanks, me too!
I see your projects everywhere! I love this. I didn’t think of it but I could reuse my milk glasses to put the bath salts in. Thank you for the post. I see your posts alot and I’m loving it.
Nichole, thank you so much!
Bonnie, just emailed you. Thanks.
Where did you get your containers?
I found them at Target. They are Starbucks bottles.
Hi :)
When you say 1 cup how much is that in Grams?
I would love to try this :)
Thanks for sharing!
Catia- That would be 128grams per 1 cup. Thank you.
the label links are not working.
not sure if they are still active
thanks
Siobhan- Just fixed the links. Thank you for letting me know about this problem.
