Tips for Updating your Laundry Room

*This is a sponsored post on behalf of Wilsonart.

We recently updated our laundry room and learned a few things along the way.  Our laundry room is a fairly good size…which is nice, but it serves as the main entrance in our home because the outside door is right by the driveway, as opposed to our official front door.

tips for updating laundry room

This means that extended family members, and the kids and their friends all use this as the main entrance.  Who wants their company parading through the laundry room?  We waited several years after being in our home before we finally made the laundry room a place that we could actually enjoy and feel okay welcoming guests in.  Why did we wait so long?

Today I am sharing with you some easy and inexpensive tips for updating your laundry room.  There are a few things you can do that will make a HUGE difference in the overall look and feel of your laundry room.

1 paint

Painting your walls can transform the look and feel of your home. You can make a small room look substantially bigger by using light colors or you can create a mood based on the paint color of your choice.  Paint is one of the most inexpensive ways to update a space.

Paint the trim a contrasting color or a nice crisp white color to create interest and give the room a nice finished look.

2 storage

If your room does not have enough storage, you may want to look for ways to add some shelves or storage areas so you can store items that add to the clutter.  The less clutter in your space, the more visually aesthetic your room becomes.  Clutter detracts from a calm and inviting feeling.

Laundry room lockers

Think about adding some shelves, or some creative bins to hold all that laundry that tends to spill over in the laundry room.

3 organize

An organized space also adds an element of peace and tranquility.  Organize your supplies by placing them in bins or containers or gathering similar items in one place.  This will help you by cutting out the searching and make your space and efficient area to work.  I always enjoy working in a clean, organized and clutter free area.

4 lighting

Update your lighting.  If your light fixtures are old and dated, think about replacing them with a modern and updated fixture.  If replacing is not in your budget, think about giving the old one a fresh layer of paint.  Spray it white or use a metallic spray paint to give the fixture a new life.

Add brighter light bulbs.  A bright and well light space will be more inviting than a dark and dreary room.  Isn’t laundry already a dreary enough task?

5 upgrade

Take your room out of the 70’s by updating your floors and/or countertops.  Wilsonart has some great looking laminate countertops and some great flooring options that won’t break your bank.  Options that look like high end products but without the high end costs.

6 decorate

Finally, add some fun décor to your laundry room.  This is my favorite part.  Just because the laundry isn’t a lot of fun doesn’t mean your laundry room can’t be pretty.  If you have to spend a lot of time in a room, shouldn’t you enjoy being in there?

Put up some fun shelves and add some flare and color.

Make your space your own by bringing in some items that make you happy.

All in all, with just a few simple updates you can transform your space into a place that you enjoy spending time in and you won’t mind if your guests walk in and out of!

All right, now let’s talk about how I made this laundry sign. I simply took a scrap piece of plywood that I had laying around and cut it so that it measured about 18 x 8 inches.

I painted it yellow and then antiqued it with Martha Stewarts Tintable Antique Effect and some brown paint. Simply mix the two mediums together and paint it onto your board. Then take a lightly wet sponge and remove it from the areas you want less antiquing effect.

I let the paint dry and made up this laundry sign template on my Silhouette CAMEO machine and cut it out on some black premium vinyl (which you can pick up today for a great price :)!!

Then I simply transferred the vinyl to my painted board.

This sign was then used to decorate the DIY Blogger House. Want to make one for your house? You can get this exact same template on the Silhouette online store. Just search for Laundry signs and you can’t miss it!

How to make café shelves

I hope you all had a great and relaxing Mother’s Day Weekend. We were lucky enough to have my Brother-In-Law and his family stay with us this weekend. Things were a bit crazy considering that there are 11 kids between us ages 14 to 3…!! But we had a great time playing with them. Now it is time to get back to work.

I had a lot of you comment about the café shelves we have in our newly updated Laundry Room. We made them and so can you. The best part is that they are super easy to make. Win Win for sure.  So if you would like some in your home keep reading…

How to Make Café Shelves:

1.  Find a pair  of Shelf Corner Brackets.

I used some from Lowe’s that we found in the molding aisle.  We went with the 7 inch size because that is the size that fit the best with the shelf we had chosen.  For one shelf you will need 2 brackets.  If you are making 2 shelves like we did you will need 4 brackets.

2.  Find or make a wall shelf.

We happened to find a nice pre-made shelf at Home Depot.  We loved the chunkier style of it and the that it has some nice decorative molding along the edges.  It was in the closet and storage aisle.

3.  Spray paint your shelves your desired color.

Spray paint was the easiest and fastest option.  Plus—I LOVE spray paint.  It makes me super happy.

4. Glue your corner brackets on the BOTTOM of your shelf.

Make sure that the back of the bracket is lined up perfectly with the back of your shelf. So that when the shelf is on the wall, there will be no gap between the wall and the bracket. You want them to look like they are holding up the shelf.

We used Gorilla Wood Glue.

5.  Be sure to adjust the bracket and place it in from the edge of the shelf.

We measured ours so that it was set in 4 inches from the side end on both ends of the shelf.

6.  Let Wood Glue dry completely.

We decided to make our shelves the same size but had debated about making the top shelf a bit smaller than the other one.  Ultimately we decided to go with two of the same size shelves.  I am really happy with how they turned out and feel like the brackets give the shelf a lot of fun character and interest.

Have any of you made any café shelves or something similar for your home? I would love to see them.  I would also love to see if any of you end up making some of these.  I always love hearing from you guys out there!

Laundry room Update & Lowes giveaway

This Giveaway is now CLOSED!

Hey guys! I am so happy to be able to share with you today an update on our Laundry Room.  This room has been a work in progress for WAY too long.  I shared with you in January mid way through our progress and asked for your advice. Thanks for everyone who shared. I did read each and everyone and even got a couple of emails with some great advice that actually helped push me in the right direction…so thank you.  I have the best readers!

We built the washer and dryer platform in January early this year.

We started the actual remodeling process on this room way back before Thanksgiving when we painted our lockers white.   I was really worried about painting ALL the cabinets white in this room, so I was struggling with trying to decide where to go next but knew that I was not happy with the final overall look of the room.

Then, we got crazy busy with the remodel of our kitchen and getting our wood flooring installed during December, January and February.  So this room just sat in limbo…waiting patiently (ha!) for its turn.

Well, I got the perfect burst of energy to finally get this room ship shape during April after Snap of course! As you know, I am one of Lowe’s Creative Bloggers and our challenge for this month was to give a room a new facelift.  Just the motivation I needed to finally tackle this room once and for all.

laundry room 6 wm

And I am really happy with the final outcome.  There are still a few things to get just right…like the items on the shelves and the right window treatment…but overall I am loving it.  I am so glad we were brave enough to paint the cabinets all white.  The room is so bright and fresh now!
