Have you heard of Sea Glass Candy? It has become fairly popular with weddings and showers lately but I remember it as a kid. I have been wanting to make some for a while now, simply because the candy is so pretty.
Ingredients
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup water
- 3/4 cup corn syrup
- 1/4 – 1 tsp. flavoring oil
- Powdered sugar (to coat cooled candy)
1. Lightly grease jelly roll pan.
2. Pour sugar, corn syrup and water in a medium saucepan. Place over medium heat and stir until sugar dissolves.
3. Without stirring, boil the mixture until a candy thermometer reads between 300 and 310 degrees. (about 20-30 minutes.) Drop a small amount into ice water. If it separates into brittle strands its ready.
5. Remove from heat and let boiling subside.
6. Measure flavoring oil and pour into candy mixture. Also add food coloring if desired. Blend with a wooden spoon. **Be very careful when adding as it will let off strong smell and steam.
7. Pour onto greased cookie sheet or cake pan. Let cool.
8. Cover with wax paper and hit lightly with a hammer to break into smaller pieces.
Take the pieces and coat them lightly with some powdered sugar.
Package up so that it is pretty and give it away to a friend! I flavored mine with an orange flavored oil. Yum!

Oh I love how pretty that is Amy! I'm going to have to try that, what a great display!
I am making a batch today, pink and strawberry flavored for my daughters mermaid themed b-day party this weekend, thanks for your tutoril.
My friend makes this with cinnamon oil and colors it red. It is YUMMY!
That looks fun to make! I may have to try that out!
Fun! We used to make anise candy…it was the cool thing to have in high school.
Oh *WOW*! How cute to add a red/pink color and oil. One time I tried to make toffee.. and it burned. :( Maybe I need a better thermometer? It didn't even get to the temperature (on my thermometer) that it said to get to do on the recipe!
this looks so easy and you're right, they are pretty! I hope that you will link this up to my Show and Share linky party, going on all week. http://craftygeordi.blogspot.com/2011/01/hi-everyone-i-had-busy-day-yesterday.html
I would do orange, and cinnamon. I think root beer is good too. There are so many great options, and it does look great.
Imagine if you hade a Snow White party and these were some of the "gems" from the Dwarves' mine. Little girls would love it, my little boy would love it. (that is my kids' favorite scene in the movie)
I haven't thought about this candy in years! We used to make this when I was in middle school! It was so popular back then and the little drug store by us sold the flavoring. How fun!!
This is beautiful! And since we collect our own sea glass my girls will go nuts trying to make this! Guess I better go out and get a candy thermometer! Thanks so much for sharing! :)
AWESOME! I've never made candy… it looks like you're using a double boiler… is that right or am I just seeing things?
THANK YOU!

This looks so cool! I want to try and make some for my daughter's birthday party coming up! Great idea!
How exciting! It looks so yummy!
THANK YOU!! a friend of mine gave a batch to me and it was a hit with everyone in my family! Ever since then I've been trying to find the recipe for months… what a surprise for it to pop up here! Thank you soo much! :)
Here's a thought….Could I be you for just one day? I love all the ideas you pass one. I can't do about 98% of them, but I love them still!
Could we be ANY more alike? I am such a candy maker! I love it. And I busted my candy thermometer in the fall, and I haven't gotten a new one. I need to try this! I made lollipops last summer, and it was so much fun. Now we're gonna try this. And I MUST have that jar. Must. It's calling to me!
That is a great idea for a treat! What size mason jar is that in the last picture?? I would love to use these as a favor.
Our favorite real sea glass is blue or green. I'm going to make it in those colors and flavor with green apple and berry. So pretty!
I used to make this with my 4th graders to teach them about igneous rocks…hot lava turning into a smooth and hard rock once cooled. They thought it was AWESOME! Especially since they got to eat it :)
I have been goo goo ga ga over sea glass candy but have not made it yet. Yours turn out so beautiful and I am sure it tastes amazing too.

Where do you get your flavoring oil from???
We make this every december and my son calls it glass of candy lol. Yours looks so pretty and tasty
FOr those who are looking for the oils: https://www.lorannoils.com/c-6-super-strength-flavors-candy-oils.aspx?gclid=CKfDjIHx76YCFQwCbAodrVc8Aw
None of my local craft stores had them, but I was able to find them at a specialty cooking store and that is the brand they had.
To the OP… what kind of oils are you using? The LorAnn oils said they are 4 times stronger than regular oils and I don't want to over power my candy with the flavoring. Thanks so much!
I used LorAnn's oil. I actually really like it and have found mine at my local grocery store, Ben Franklin and Robert's crafts.
Jen – don't worry about it being too strong. The oil packages describe very similar recipes and indicate how much you should use for that oil. Either way, I found it to be pretty close to the recipe mentioned.
ENJOY! It's SO easy and fun! Oh! And I found if you score the candy with a knife while it's still warm, you can often break it into less sharp pieces by hand.
Thanks again for posting this! It's been great to make for my daughter's upcoming party!
You have one of the coolest blogs. Thanks for sharing your skills! These seem really fun to make. I LOVE the jar you put them in. Where did you purchase that? Please advise ([email protected]) Keep inspiring!
I found my jar at Ben Franklin crafts. I have also seen some similar ones at Roberts Crafts.
I love the Idea Room but when I was reading this recipe on my iPad an ad for Publishers Clearinghouse kept opening up on top of it. When I clicked the Select. Tutor to close it it would open right back up. I just thought you might want to pass this on to your blog platform.
