February Photo-a-Day Challenge 2014

It’s here!!  I have had several of you asking for the new challenge and I am happy to say it is here! I thought I would change things up a bit and that it would be fun for me to highlight some of YOUR photos from each challenge.  So I kept an eye out and picked just a few of them to highlight here from January’s Photo-a-Day Challenge. photoaday features labels square

Joining us for the first time? Here are some questions and answers that might be helpful to you.  We hope you will join us!

February-Photo-a-day-challenge

What exactly is photo-a-day you say?

Every month I share with you some photo prompts or suggestions for each day of the month.  You can play along by taking a picture of your interpretation of the prompt (or come up with your own if you don’t like it).

How do I play along?

You can share your photos through any of the social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, your Blog, Flickr, etc.

You can tag me @theidearoom on your social media sites too if you want me to be able to see it!  I love to see what my readers are sharing!  It makes my day!

Simply add the hashtag #theidearoom so that the rest of us who are playing can follow along and we can all see your photos.

What is a hashtag and how does it work?

A hashtag is the pound sign (#) followed by a word of short phrase (without a space) that describes or classifies your tweet or photo on Twitter or Instagram.  If you click on a hashtag you will be taken to a list of tweets or pictures all containing the same hashtag.

How can I see other people’s photos?

Once you’ve shared your own photo, and included the hashtag #theidearoom, simply click on the the hashtag.  You will be taken to a screen with everyone’s photos who have also added #theidearoom hashtag.  Go ahead and comment and like each other’s photos.  This way everyone has fun!

What if you forget a day…or 2…or 20?

Not a big deal…really! Just start up again.  You can play catch up, or just start again.  No one will care…I promise.  Heck…I skipped plenty of days when life got too crazy and the prompts are mine!!  Share with your friends and family!  Have fun.  The point is to get you to record your everyday moments.  To capture a small snapshot of your day.

But remember…The Idea Room is a family friendly site!  Let’s keep it that way people!

How to Enjoy Family Pictures

Do you have a love/hate relationship with having your family pictures taken?!? As a mom, I LOVE having the beautiful memories captured, but the process can be stressful when I have less than cooperative family members ruining my perfect pictures. I’m going to share some tips today on how to Enjoy, not just ENDURE family pictures.

How-to-Enjoy-Family-Pictures

{more images of this session}

My name is Kristen Duke, and besides being a mama to 4 fabulous children and wife to one handsome husband (who may loathe having pictures taken) I’m a professional photographer and DIY-er over at Capturing Joy.

Capturing Joy with Kristen Duke

Amy is one of my most favorite bloggers, an inspiration to me in many ways, who introduced me to this creative blogging world. I’m delighted to be here today, along with sharing family picture tips on several other blogs, so make sure you check out the links at the bottom of this post.

I’ve photographed lots and lots of families over the past 10 years, and let me tell you–it’s pretty standard that most of the husbands dread it, and the kids don’t generally like to sit still long enough to capture the winning shot. It’s my job as a photographer to have some tricks up my sleeve, but it’s your job as mama (most of you I’m guessing are women) to relax because we all know if mom is stressed, it reflects on everyone else. I know what it is like on both sides of the camera, and let me just tell you that your family is not the only one with rowdy children–it’s totally normal!

Here are some tips to enjoy your photo session more:

Before the Session

  • I suggest to my clients to tell the kids about something fun such as going out for ice cream after a photo session, in hopes it will bribe entice them enough to cooperate for a little bit.
  • I’ve started offering petite sessions (15-20 minutes) because many children just don’t have the endurance to smile and “behave well” for the full hour that most photographers spend. Yes, it takes weeks leading up to it, and hours that day getting ready, but you don’t need a full hour to capture greatness.
  • Ask your husband (with batted, puppy dog eyes) to please help you relax and tame the children, and cooperate himself. Grumpy dads really sour the whole mood. They aren’t all bad, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the smiling cooperative husbands out there (Amy’s being one of them, below)

{more images of this session}

During the session

  • If your photographer is snapping your kids individually or all your kids by themselves (without you), sometimes it’s best to just walk away and let them work their magic without you hovering.
  • Don’t be critical of your kids and how they look, only build them up.
  • Do not threaten them or hang the ice cream incentive constantly over their heads. It will likely stress them out more.

Just have Fun!

I know moms want the standard posed pictures, I do, too! However, I like to encourage taking FUN pictures, more candid in nature, kids (and dads) love it so much! One of the best compliments I can get is hearing a dad say at the end, “That wasn’t so bad, that was actually FUN!” Do you have a favorite treat such as cupcakes that would be fun to eat at the end of your session, and have in pictures, too? Do you like to play tag or another game? Does your toddler love “ring around the Rosie?” Capture this FUN in your session, and you will be happy to have those moments frozen in time. Below are some candid, FUN pictures:

Project Life

This post is sponsored by Project Life and American Crafts.

You guys! I am loving this Project Life scrapbooking.  I have mentioned before about my lack of ability for scrapbooking.  My scrapbook skills are stuck in the 1990’s and it takes me way too long to design ONE.SINGLE.PAGE.  Ain’t nobody got time for that!

PL 2

A couple of months ago, I started using Becky Higgins Project Life and I am LOVING it.  It is hands down one of the easiest and cutest ways to document your family photos.  The designs and layout are hip and adorable.  I used the Honey Edition for this layout.

PL 1

I am finally finding the time…and the desire, to get my pictures out of the old boxes and off of the computer and into an album that we can actually see and ENJOY!  And…they even come with helpful little hints…which are really helpful for people like me.

PL 10

For some reason, even though I am creative, I have a really hard time deciding how to arrange things in my scrapbooks.  It is also simple enough that it makes for a great Sunday activity at my house with my girls.  They LOVE to help me and would love to start a mini album of their own.

PL 11

The most recent pages I finished were dedicated to our recent family trip to Lake Powell just a couple of weeks ago.  Boating and camping are some of our favorite family activities to do together and it is so nice to be able to document them in a fun and beautiful way.

PL 9

After years of struggling about what to do with all of our memories and photos…I am so happy to finally be enjoying them again.

PL 5

Project Life is now available in retailers throughout the U.S., including Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Archivers, Craft Warehouse, Beverly’s Fabrics and hundreds of independent shops.  You can also find Project Life online at Two Peas in a Bucket and Scrapbooks.com.

For a full list of retailers, including international stores, please visit the Project Life store finder.

PL

Have you guys tried Project Life yet?  What do you love about Project Life?

*This post is sponsored by Project Life and American Crafts.  However, all statements, photos and opinions are mine.  I was provided the Honey Edition for review.

What if you forget a day…or 2…or 20?
Not a big deal really!
