Flower Baby Mobile–The Shabby Creek Cottage

Hi there! I’m Gina and I blog at The Shabby Creek Cottage. I’ve known Amy for quite some time, and I am so excited to be here today. She is such an inspiration – and I’m honored to be sharing a project on The Idea Room.

Make-a-Mobile

Although I’m long past my baby years, my sister is *this* close to having a baby. I’m helping her get the nursery ready, and one of the things I’ve put together for my new niece is a baby mobile. It’s colorful & fun, and just so girly. And I’m going to share how I made it!

First you’re going to need a few supplies:
Tissue paper (I used 3 colors)
An embroidery hoop
Craft Paper
Pencil
Baker’s Twine
Hot Glue & Gun
Scissors
Ribbon & Trim
A paper punch
Card stock
Rubber stamp with ink
A metal ring (I used a drapery hoop with the hook removed)
First, you’ll need to make the pom poms. I could explain, but Martha Stewart does an amazing job. Instead of using wire, use the bakers twine to tie up the middles and leave a long amount on the ends so you can tie them to the hoop later.
To make the bees, stamp onto card stock, then punch out with a scalloped edge circle punch. You’ll need 2 punches for each one. Use hot glue to put them together, and sandwich the end of a long piece of ribbon in the middle of the two punched pieces. Once it’s together, you can tie it to the embroidery hoop.
Now let’s find the center to hang it from. Trace the inside of the hoop onto craft paper, then cut it out. Next, fold it in half, then in half again to get quarters. Unfold it and use the fold lines to find the quadrants of the circle, and use your pencil to mark the inside of the hoop.
Cut 4 pieces of ribbon about 24 inches long and tie each one to the hoop, using hot glue to hold them in place on the marks you made on the hoop. Bring them all together and tie them to the metal ring, and it will be ready to hang.
After you have it hanging, tie on the tissue pom poms, tie on the bees, and additional ribbon pieces if you’d like to fluff it a little more. Put the outer ring on, and add a bit of ribbon to it with hot glue if you’d like to dress it up a bit more.
The beautiful part is that you can customize it with different colors of tissue or stamps, ribbons and trims. It’s the perfect project to use up bits and scraps of leftover ribbon, paper and string.
