Halloween Mummy Birthday Party

Mummy-treats

We love Halloween at our house as it is always a good excuse for a party.  So I am always on the lookout for new and fun Halloween Snacks and Treats.

Halloween-treats

My son has an October birthday and we decided to have a friend party with a Halloween theme. At our house we only do friend birthdays on the years they turn an even age. We went with a mummy theme.

We made the guests some mummy candy bars. We made those by first taking a rectangle of black cardboard paper and glueing two google eyes on it. Then we glued them onto the candy bar (a regular sized Hershey bar).

Then we took some white streamers about 72 inches in length for each candy bar. Then we glued on end of the streamer onto the bottom of the candy bar wrapper and then simply wrap up the candy bar. When finished glue the other end of the streamer to hold it in place.

We also made some mummy cupcakes. We used white chocolate chips for the eyes and placed them on a rectangle of black icing. Then I added a small drop of black icing to make the pupils.

Then I simply frosted the cupcake with icing in strips. These are some of the simplest cupcakes to make, but they are so cute.

We wrapped up some Gatorade and made some mummy drinks for the kids too. My son wanted to play capture the flag with marshmallow guns (for more about marshmallow guns see this post). They had so much fun. Then when the game was finished, the boys came in and made their own individual mummy pizzas.  You could also include some Mummy Oreo Pops or make these fun bendable Mummy dolls.

And finally, we made some mummy pretzels to go in the take home goody bags. These are super simple too. We took a pretzel rod and dipped it into chocolate. Then when the chocolate had hardened we added some eyes.

Then we simply drizzled white chocolate over them to make the mummy covering.

Halloween Mummy Pizza and Mummy Dogs

At our house, we have a Halloween feast. It is usually done sometime within the week before Halloween. I have already shared with you a couple of our feast items like the edible worms and eyeballs. For the main portion of the meal we usually make individual Mummy Pizzas or Mummy Dogs.

To make Mummy Pizzas just take some bagels and spread spaghetti sauce on each half. Place whatever toppings you would like on top of the sauce (ie. ham, pepperoni, pineapple, etc). Then take a stick of sting cheese and tear it into strips. Lay the strips on the bagel so that it looks like the mummy rags. Then place in the oven on broil for 5-8 minutes. Watch closely so that they don’t burn. We caught ours just in time! The best part is that each child can make their own just how they like it!

To make Mummy Dogs you will need some bread dough and hot dogs. We used a store bought tube of Pillsbury crescent dough. Wrap the dough around each hot dog so that they look like mummies. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Add drops of ketchup or mustard for eyes.

Halloween-food

I like to label all the food we eat at our feast with some marshmallow ghosts. I save them and use them each year. I just took some large marshmallows and added eyes with a Sharpie. Then I just printed the name of the food item on some red scrapbook paper and tore it around the edges and attached it to a popsicle stick which I inserted into the marshmallow. (I realize you could have figured all that out by looking at the picture…but just in case)!

I also found a fun link that has quite a few ideas for some Halloween cupcakes here.

Jell-O "Blood" Worms

Jell-O Blood Worms

These edible Jell0 Worms are a BIG hit for our Halloween Dinner. The first time I served these up the kids really freaked out. My daughter couldn’t even look at them at first, but after some coaxing and a little good natured teasing, she ate one. Then much too her surprise, she liked them.

They take a little effort to make, but I think they are worth it. Plan to make these at least a day ahead of time.

Jell-O Blood Worms

Ingredients:

100 flexible plastic straws

(The straws with a bendable neck make the most realistic worms by adding ridges to the worm. Place bendable necks of straws at the bottom of the container).

an empty, cleaned 1-quart milk or orange juice carton to hold straws.

(The straws will fill up to the height of the container, the taller the better.)

1 package (6 ounces) raspberry or grape flavor gelatin
3 envelopes unflavored gelatin
3 cups boiling water
3/4 cup whipping cream
12 to 15 drops green food coloring

waxed paper

Instructions:

1.  Combine gelatins in a bowl and add boiling water; stir until gelatins completely dissolve. Chill until lukewarm, about 20 min.

2.  Meanwhile, gently pull straws to extend to full length; place in tall container. Wrap together with a loose rubber band to hold straws together.

3.  Blend cream and food coloring with the lukewarm gelatin mixture. Carefully pour into container, filling straws.

4.  Chill until gelatin is firm, at least 8 hours, or cover and chill up to 2 days.

5.  Pull straws from container or, if you’re using a carton, simply tear the carton away from the filled straws. Pull straws apart. Run hot tap water for about 2 seconds over 3 to 4 straws at a time. Starting at the empty ends, push worms from straws with rolling pin, or use your fingers.

6.  Lay worms on waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Cover and chill until ready to use, at least 1 hour or up to 2 days. Worms will hold at room temperature for about 2 hours.
