Last week I shared with you the before photos for our Family Room Renovation in this post. Well, today I am excited to finally be able to share with you our Family Room Renovation Reveal! These projects always seem to take so long to finish…longer than you would expect them too. I imagine that has something to do with the fact that we have 5 kids, jobs and busy schedules that keep us from getting to things as quickly as we would like…but it’s done and I am so happy with how it has turned out.
I LOVE how bright and fresh the room feels to me now. The room before felt dark and pretty boring. The fireplace did not fit the overall look I was trying to create in our home. So this room sat pretty much untouched expect for the initial changes we made upon moving in. (You can read more about that here).
I wanted white walls and wanted to put up some shiplap to cover the walls which were really bad due to the original owners wallpapering directly on the dry wall…don’t do that…ever! It is a nightmare to remove. Paint the wall first if you are planning on wallpapering…you will thank me someday for that tidbit of advice. I am absolutely in love with the walls now! I need to find another wall to shiplap. I think I will add a shiplap wall in daughter’s room this summer because I love it so much!
Some of our family thought we were crazy for adding white walls (with shiplap). They thought it was too much white. Psh…they obviously don’t know me that well! I LOVE clean and white in my home. It makes me feel so happy! And your home should be a reflection of who you are and what you love! So just don’t listen to the naysayers. And you know what? I had a few of them tell me later that they actually loved how it turned out and they just didn’t have the vision we did (hehe!) ;)
This chair is now sitting where the fireplace was. I love that we are able to actually have a set up that works well in here. The fireplace and the window and door placements had made it so that the room could only be set up in one way. Now I can switch things up as I want when I want to make a few changes here and there.
This fun Card Catalog Side Table was a piece that we also renovated. My friend found it for me at the thrift store for $15! Can you believe that? She is the best. The Card Catalog was in pretty bad shape so we changed it up a bit so that it fit our space and our needs. You can see the before here and see what we did to fix it up!
I love family photos and wanted to be able to display some fun photos of our family doing the things we love…which mostly consists of boating and playing in the water. My handy hubby built some really simple Photo Ledge Shelves that we hung on the wall. It is so easy to change out photos now. I will be sharing a tutorial for the shelves here soon, so be sure to check back if you are interested in how he built them.
I LOVE Barn Doors and have always wanted to incorporate one in our main living space and we just didn’t have a spot where we had a long enough wall to make one work. So when we decided to take out the fireplace, I knew I suddenly had the perfect spot for my barn door.
We built the barn door to the exact specifications we needed. We will be sharing how to build a barn door in an upcoming post, so be sure to check back in for that if you have been thinking about making one. To see how to install barn door hardware, you can go here. The paint color on the Barn Door is Glidden Diamond Paint in Key Largo Bay.
We originally had some curtains in this room, but we framed out the windows with some nice Farmhouse window trim and I just love them so much. I hate to cover them up with curtains….so I am still debating about that. For now I am happy with them off of the windows.
We will also be sharing how we created the Farmhouse Trim Windows in an upcoming post! Looks like I have some work to do to get those posts out to you!
And finally, we have a tutorial coming for How to Shiplap your Walls. We did ours in a really simple way and it didn’t cost us very much to complete the whole room!
The whole room just makes me happy! It is so bright and clean looking. It looks like a completely different room. It is the room we spend a lot of time in together as a family and with the fireplace gone, it finally feels like the rest of our home aesthetically!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
xoxo
