ORANGE ROLLS
When my husband and I were first married, we wanted to blend each of our favorite family traditions and create our a combination of traditions for our own little family.
My Mother-in-Law makes the most ah-mazing Orange Rolls. So amazing that Thanksgiving and Christmas at her house would not be complete without them.
ORANGE ROLLS RECIPE
These rolls made the cut and they are now a must for our Holiday dinner table. I wish you could smell how citrus-y and delicious they are…but you can certainly make some for yourself with this recipe.
Orange Rolls
These Orange Rolls are so delicious they will become a new favorite in your home. Perfect for Thanksgiving Dinner or Christmas Dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp Yeast
- ¼ cup lukewarm Water
- 1 cup hot Milk
- ½ cup Shortening
- ⅓ cup Sugar
- ½ tsp Salt
- 2 large Eggs beaten lightly
- ¼ cups Fresh Orange Juice
- 5 to 5 ½ cups Flour
- 2 Tbsp grated Orange Peel
FROSTING
- 1 cup Powdered Sugar
- 2 Tbsp fresh Orange Juice
- Grated Orange Peel from one orange
Instructions
-
In separate bowl, sprinkle yeast on water and allow to moisten.
-
Meanwhile, in mixing bowl, pour hot milk over shortening, sugar and salt and mix
-
Blend in eggs, then orange juice. Mix in ¾ to 1 cup flour and then add yeast. Beat in remaining flour and orange peel. Be sure to use dough hooks and don't add too much flour.
-
Cover bowl of dough with clean dish cloth, set in warm spot, and allow to rise until doubled. Punch down dough and roll out (1/2 batch at a time) on floured surface into a long rectangle that is about the width of the rolling pin. Cut dough with a pizza cutter down the center (lengthwise) and then into about 1 inch strips (width wise). Roll each piece into a round ball. Place two dough balls together and place into greased muffin tins and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
-
Bake at 400 degrees for 8- 9 minutes. Frost (see below) the rolls that will be eaten right away and save the rest in a ziploc bag in the fridge. Serve warm with butter! Makes about 45 rolls.
-
For the frosting, stir together all ingredients and brush onto rolls.
Seriously people…these are so good. Make some today and you will thank me!

These look amazing! Are they served in a savoury capacity or are they a breakfast or dessert roll?
Trish says
Orange rolls are more of a breakfast or dessert item. At our house they rarely cool – we devour them moments after they come out of the oven! Just glaze and eat while they’re still hot!

Amen and amen! :)
I think I will try these!! They sound and look amazing!! Thanks for sharing!!!
So excited to make these! Last year’s recipe was a total flop. These look amazing!
These look unbelievably yummy!
These look delicious! Wondering if I can use butter in place of the shortening??
THis recipe Is virtually identical to the very old Fleishmann’s Yeast cookbook orange roll recipe. That one uses Fleishmann’s margarine (nearly impossible to find in Chicagoland these days). It also has a sugar/orange rind mix sprinkled on the rolled-out dough, rolled and sliced like a cinnamon roll. Makes less rolls, but it looks less obvious eating 3 big rolls that it does 12 smaller rolls. I’m 44 and this recipe has been used every Christmas morning my entire life (and Easter)!!!
I wonder if that is where my MIL got her recipe! They have been using it for years as well and is one of my husband’s favorite recipes of his mom’s. Thank you for sharing this!
Which type of yeast do you use? The store had three different types. Also, when you say add the yeast, I an guessing that means with the water it is floating in? Sorry to ask such basic questions but I have never made rolls before.
What do you mean by shortening ? Crisco ? Butter ? Thanks !
Nancy- Shortening is Crisco. You can use any brand though.
Will definitely try them. Looks so yummy.
