Make this simple and easy Cinnamon Vanilla Homemade Sugar Scrub recipe. Sugar can break down layers of dead skin cells to exfoliate them away, smoothing the skin’s surface. With this layer removed the sugar can more efficiently speed up rehydration, which leads to better conditioning and moisturizing.
HOMEMADE SUGAR SCRUB
You guys know I love me a good sugar scrub. I love to play around with some of the different DoTerra Essential Oils I have and make sugar scrubs that smell delicious but also provide the benefits of the various oils.
I personally love the scent of Cinnamon AND the scent of Vanilla. They remind me of the holidays and winter time. So I decided to make a Cinnamon Vanilla Sugar Scrub…and let me tell you…this one smells so good! I think it is now my favorite so far.
CAN SUGAR SCRUBS BE USED AS A FACE SCRUB?
I personally don’t recommend using this particular cinnamon scrub on your face. Cinnamon is a hot oil and may be a little too harsh for your sensitive skin on the face but especially around your eyes. The brown sugar crystals are also a little larger and therefore can provide a harsher exfoliation.
WHAT IS A CARRIER OIL?
A Carrier Oil is an important aspect of an aromatherapy massage. The carrier oils can affect the benefits and usefulness of the essential oils. The quality of the oil can affect the color, scent, therapeutic properties, and shelf life of the final product.
Carrier oils affect the lubrication required for a massage, the carrier oil penetrates the skin and along with it, carrys the essential oils into the body.
WHAT TYPE OF CARRIER OIL SHOULD I USE IN DIY SUGAR SCRUBS?
There are several kinds of carrier oils or base oils that you can use to create a sugar scrub. They each have their own benefits and uses. You want a high quality oil that is fresh so that the shelf life of the product will last a long time and you will get the full benefits of the oil.
These are some of my favorite carrier oils:
- fractionated coconut oil
- coconut oil
- grapeseed oil
- olive oil
- jojoba oil
- argan oil
- almond oil
- avocado oil
- rosehip oil or rosemary oil
HOW LONG DOES HOMEMADE SUGAR SCRUB LAST?
A good body scrub made with high quality ingredients and essential oils can last up to 6 months if stored and used properly. Be really careful to not introduce dirty hands, fingers or a scoop into the scrub. This can cause bacteria to grow. Mold can also grow if kept in a very humid and moist environment like a shower or bathroom, without keeping it sealed in an air-tight container.
HOW TO STORE BODY SUGAR SCRUBS
Scrubs should be stored in a dry place to avoid growing mold. They also need to be stored in an air tight container, jar or mason jars. If stored properly they can be used for several months.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE A HOMEMADE SUGAR SCRUB?
I wouldn’t use a sugar scrub daily. Up to 3 times a week is the maximum amount of times I would recommend using a body scrub. Your skin can become really sensitive and may actually dry out if you are using it too often. Give your skin a break to get the best results.
HOW TO USE HOMEMADE SUGAR SCRUB
You will want to use these sugar scrubs on your tougher skin areas like your body, arms, legs, hands and feet…not your face. This is good for a body scrub and not a facial scrub.
To use, scoop a small amount onto clean, dry skin using dry fingers. Then, wet your fingers and gently massage the sugar scrub over your face. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm or warm water and pat dry. Skin will be smooth and soft and an amazing lingering fragrance.
HOW TO MAKE DIY SUGAR SCRUB RECIPE
Isn’t she pretty to look at too? I love the texture of this one. This cinnamon sugar body scrub is a little bit different than my other ones because I added some Raw Cane Sugar. This sugar has a larger granule and I love the feeling and the exfoliation it along with the smaller granules of the white sugar. You will need the following materials to make this scrub recipe.
MATERIALS NEEDED TO MAKE SUGAR SCRUB
- Coconut Oil or Sweet Almond Oil
- Raw Cane Sugar
- Granulated White Sugar
- Cinnamon Essential Oil
- ground Cinnamon (optional)
- Label (find it below)
- medium bowl
- wooden spoon
- cinnamon sticks
- wooden scoop
- glass jar or mason jar
- vitamin e oil (optional)

- 1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract or Essential Oil

Simply mix all the sugars and the vanilla and the essential oils.
Then gradually add the oil base mixing while pouring.
Add the oil until you are happy with the texture and consistency of the scrub.
I like mine a little on the non-oily side. But it is just a matter of preference really.
WHERE TO BY ESSENTIAL OILS
I have been a long time user of essential oils. I have always love DoTerra’s high quality oils and use them all of the time.

WHAT SUGARS CAN I USE FOR A SUGAR SCRUB?
There are several different types of sugars you can use when making a scrub. The bigger the sugar crystal, the more exfoliation the scrub will provide. I also like to think about the aesthetic when choosing a sugar. You can really pick and choose depending on what you want out of the scrub. You can also make several batches and switch up the sugars to see what combinations you like the best!
