Have you ever sprinkled Reindeer Food on your front lawn on Christmas Eve to give Santa’s reindeer a little snack on their big, busy night? Magic Reindeer Food is a fun Christmas Eve tradition the kids are going to love! I love the extra magic it can bring during the holiday season! And it is super easy to make!
I love to give this to my little nieces and nephews at our annual GingerBread House Making Party for them to sprinkle on their lawn Christmas Eve night. They love it! My kids have even given this to their friends for a little Christmas present. It is such a simple gift, but one that the kids love to get.
HOW DOES MAGIC REINDEER FOOD WORK?
If you are unfamiliar with Reindeer Food…the premise is that you sprinkle it on your lawn on Christmas Eve night. It’s magic will guide Santa’s Reindeer to your home and provide them with a little nourishment to keep them energized to finish all the work they have to do. As the reindeer fly over your home on Christmas Eve, the magic will ensure Rudolph and his friends will be sure to stop so Santa can drop off his gifts!
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR REINDEER FOOD
There are a few items and supplies you might want if you are going to make some food for the Santa’s reindeer and reindeer feed bags as little gifts to share with others. I have created a list to help make it a little easier for you to put together!
- small canvas bags
- small cellophane bags
- bakers twine
- white card stock paper
- Cricut for stencils or print stencil and trace onto your bag with sharpie
- sharpie
- black fabric paint
- funnel
- edible glitter
- sprinkles
- red sugar, white sugar, green sugar crystals
- printer
- scissors
WHAT IS REINDEER FOOD MADE OUT OF?
To make the magic food for the sacks, simply fill your sack or baggie with a mixture of various ingredients (mix together in a large bowl) of any of the following, NO NEED TO USE ALL OF THEM:
- rolled oats
- oatmeal
- cheerios
- rice chex cereal
- corn chex cereal
- mini chocolate chips
- crushed or mini pretzels
- peanuts
- sprinkles
- red sugar
- green sugar
- white sugar
- edible glitter
HOW TO MAKE REINDEER FOOD
Stir and mix all of your ingredients in the reindeer food together and then simply pour them into your reindeer feed bags or another little baggie using a large funnel if needed. Its literally the simplest magic reindeer food recipe ever! haha!
You can attach the little reindeer food tag and reindeer food poem to them to make them extra special and to give as a little gift to your kids friends or others!
WHAT IS THE MAGIC DUST FOR SANTAS REINDEER?
The magic dust that is very important to include in your bag of reindeer feed are some magic sprinkles! I like to get the sugary sprinkles like these so they make your reindeer feed look extra special for the kids! But you can really make it anything that you want for your reindeer food! Stay away from using real glitters that are not edible to protect any wildlife or birds that may eat it or come in contact with it. Please make sure it is biodegradable.
HOW TO MAKE REINDEER FEED BAGS
I simply stenciled some small linen bags, which I purchased at Michael’s, with the image of a Reindeer on one side of the bag and the words “Reindeer Feed”. I am sharing the files for both stencils if you would like them. If you don’t want to make the little bags for the Reindeer Feed, you can simply put the Reindeer Feed in a little plastic gift bag and attach the reindeer feed gift tag.

REINDEER FOOD POEM PRINTABLE
I am not sure where this poem originated. The only place I could find it was on a conversation feed where people were sharing different ideas. This is the poem we have used for years. If you know the original source, I would love to credit it to them here.
Inside this special package is a treat
but not for you!
It contains magical reindeer food
and here is what you do.
Sprinkle this magical reindeer food
carefully on the ground.
And tonight if you are lucky
Santa’s reindeer will come around.
But here’s a secret I have to tell,
one you must try to keep.
That Santa’s reindeer only come
when you are fast asleep.
So quickly put your jammies on
and get a story read,
Then sprinkle this magic treat outside
and hurry off to bed!

Thanks Mique!
Not sure how to stensil the reindeer and words onto the bags? I’m sure this is a stupid question, but I’m confused!!!!
Sorrry!
Not a dumb question! I used my Silhouette to cut out a stencil…but I realize most do not have that machine. So I provided a pdf that you can print out onto cardstock paper and make your own stencil if you want. Just cut out the letters with an exacto knife and then use it to stencil the reindeer feed onto your bag with paint. Does that make sense?
I tried the stencils – yours turned out much nicer. The lettering was impossible, it was so small.
I was going to make the feed this week, great minds. Yours is way cuter anyway, lol! Love it!! Great staging and cute idea! XO
haha! Great minds! I don’t really believe that mine is cuter! You should still share yours! xo
So fun!-My new little neighbors are going to love this!
Thank you so much Leigh Anne! You are so sweet! I hope they do love it!
I have the same question, how do you stencil it on?
Margaret–sorry for the confusion. You can print out the pdf and make a stencil and stencil with paint onto your linen bags. I answered a little bit better on the earlier comment with the same question. Obviously I did not make that clear enough in the post! I will go and re-word it!
Such a fun idea Amy! I pinned it :)
xoxo
Thank you my friend!
My kids are going to love this! Thanks for sharing!
Such a cute idea!! Thanks, Amy!
Adorable. Thanks for providing all of the freebies too! I’ve been told santa may be bringing me a silhouette for christmas, can’t wait to be able to use it for all your cute stenciling ideas! Yay!
Oatmeal isn’t eaten by any wildlife here in Minnesota, so I doubt it is eaten by wildlife where you live. If you filled the bags with bird seed, peanuts or sunflower seed it would help the birds, rabbits and other small animals get through the winter months.
I love this idea! Could u please share the link for the free printable? I can’t find it in your FB page .TIA
Thanks for the tags. Going to use these for my boy’s class.
Can you tell me which fonts you used for “reindeer food”. I love those!
I would love to get the stencil for this! The link is not working. :)
Hi there! I just love this & would really like to get the printables, but for some reason the page is not found? Could you please check the link or send it to me? Thank you!
