HOW TO MAKE ONE HOUR CINNAMON ROLLS
Sometimes baking with yeast can be intimidating! But don’t worry…these cinnamon rolls are designed to be easy and they work out perfectly every time we make them! Just be sure to read through the directions before beginning so you have an idea of the process.
MAKING CINNAMON ROLL DOUGH
- In a large bowl or in stand mixer bowl, combine the flour, yeast and salt.
- In a small microwave safe bowl (or glass measuring cup), combine sugar, butter, water and milk. Heat in the microwave until hot and butter is almost melted (1 min. 30 sec. on HIGH). Slowly add milk mixture into the flour mixture. Add egg and mix until a soft and sticky dough forms.
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees.
- If using a stand mixer, switch to the dough hook and set on the lowest mixing setting for 4 minutes or until the dough becomes elastic or knead by hand on a lightly floured surface for 3-4 minutes. Cover dough with plastic wrap and let it rest on the counter for 5 minutes.
ROLL OUT CINNAMON ROLLS
- Next, roll dough out on a lightly floured surface until it measures a 16×9 inch rectangle. Then, prepare the filling by combining all of the ingredients in a small mixing bowl except for the butter. Spread the butter over the top of the rolled dough, then cover with the filling. Tightly roll the dough and cut into 12 portions. I like to use dental floss for this… I also cut it in half, then fourths etc. That way my pieces are all uniform in size (you may have a few smaller pieces from the ends, just arrange them around the larger rolls).
- Place the rolls into a lightly greased 9×13 baking dish and gently press a piece of aluminum foil over top. Turn OFF your oven and place the covered rolls inside to rise for 25 minutes.
- Remove rolls from oven and turn ON your oven to 375 degrees. Once heated, remove foil and bake the rolls for 15-18 minutes or until the centers are lightly golden brown in color.
- Remove and allow to cool for a few minutes before frosting. While rolls are cooling, prepare the frosting by combining all of the ingredients in a small mixing bowl and beating by hand or with a hand mixer until smooth. Spread over the tops of the rolls.
ONE HOUR CINNAMON ROLL TIPS
There are a few things you can do to ensure your cinnamon rolls come out perfect every time.
- Make sure your yeast is fresh and not old otherwise your rolls won’t rise as high or as easily. You can store your yeast in the fridge or freezer to make it last longer.
- Let all of your ingredients come to room temperature. Warm up cold ingredients by allowing them to reach room temperature or warming carefully in the microwave. Cold ingredients can stop the yeast from rising completely.
- Don’t over-knead as this will make a tougher roll rather than a soft cinnamon roll.
- Oil your mixing bowl so the dough doesn’t stick.
- Flour your work surface.
- Roll your dough our thinner to get more layers of cinnamon in your roll if you like more cinnamon per roll.
- Use thread or dental floss (unflavored) to cut your rolls easily.
