DIY Spring Paper Flowers

We have had so much snow this Spring that I decided to make my own flowers to help brighten up the cold and gloominess.  These are super easy and don’t take very long to make and really brighten up the room they are in.  They also can be used in a lot of different ways.  I thought they would be fun as cupcake toppers or as a decoration for a wrapped gift.  Or use the same concept of the flowers without the sticks and string them up on a string {or a string of lights} to make a fun springy garland for your mantle or in your daughter’s room!

Here is how I made them.  You will need the following supplies:

I used wooden beads that measured 12 mm.  This brand and size ended up fitting onto the end of a sucker stick PERFECTLY!  First I cut out some scrapbook paper {BoBunny Dots in various colors}, 2 flowers in each color.  Each flower has a front and a back paper to hide the stick in between them.

Cut a hole out of the middle of EACH flower {I have only shown 1 cut}.  The hold needs to be just big enough to fit around the bead…so about 12 mm.  I also made a few tiny slits around the inside circle so that it would slide over the bead and fit nicely without ripping.  Be really careful on this part as the paper rips pretty easily if pushed too hard.

Then I took this acrylic paint in the color Crocus Yellow and painted several of the beads and then let them dry.

Slide a stick into the end of the bead and then slide the paper over the flower and center it on the bead.  Use a thin line of hot glue around the back of the flower so that the flower stays in place.

Add the second flower so that both of the right ends of the scrapbook paper are facing outward and the stick is in the middle.  Use a small bit of the glue on the back of the flower to hold the two flowers together.

To prettify the sticks I cut a VERY thin straight piece of green paper and put a thin line of glue down on side of it and then twist the paper around the stick so that it is in a spiral all the way down.  Gently hold the strip in place to the glue firms up.  I just used a regular white Elmer’s School Glue.

Then I cut a chunk of grass out of my flower bed that needed to come out anyway and placed it in a cute bucket I have had laying around.  If you don’t want to cut up your grass, you can grow your own wheat grass yourself.  I have actually done that on one of my older posts which can be found here.

That’s it!  Pretty easy right?  And it was a fun and simple way to bring some spring and color inside.  It is sitting in my kitchen windowsill.  The grass should continue to grow if you are careful to keep a bit of dirt and the roots of your cut grass intact.  You will just need to add a few drops of water to keep your grass green and healthy indoors.  You may also need to trim the grass which is easy to do with a pair of scissors!  A fun activity that my kids get a kick out of doing!

What would you use these Paper Spring Flowers for?
