Summer is here and the heat has us looking for different ways to cool down. One of my kids favorite activities when they were younger was to make ice cream. Today I am sharing with you this fun recipe so you can make ice cream in a bag…
How to Make Your Own Ice Cream in a Baggie.
It’s a pretty simple recipe that makes a tasty Vanilla Ice Cream. We like to throw in some sliced strawberries or whatever fruit we have on hand. But you can throw pretty much any add-ins you want based on your own personal preferences.
This recipe is especially fun for the kids because instead of using an ice cream maker to churn the ice cream, the kids can shake the ice cream in the baggie to make their own. My kids would usually pull out some of their winter gloves so the ice doesn’t freeze their fingers off!
Ice Cream In a Bag
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup half and half
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup salt (kosher or rock salt works best)
Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full)
1 pint-size ziplock bag
1 gallon-size ziplock bag
1. Combine the sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly.
2. Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Feel the small bag to determine when it’s done.
3. Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, add mix-ins, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag.
Easy cleanup too!

This is a fun summer activity and a great way to cool off and enjoy a little treat on an especially hot summer day!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you have a great summer!! xo

I tried this using kosher salt, its works okay, but if you have rock salt it will freeze your 1/2 and 1/2 faster.
this is awesome..i just made this with my kids and we loved it. thank you
What is half and half? I am in Australia.
Half and half is half milk (usually 1%) and half cream
We will be doing this at girls camp for sure!! Question, have you made chocolate? If so, how!
Thank you!!
How fun! I love Girls Camp! I haven’t made chocolate but I bet you could just add some cocoa powder to it to make it chocolate.
