Make some Candy Cane Playdough for the kids this Christmas…or as a fun and unique gift idea. Sharing some Free Printable Jar Labels too.
PLAYDOUGH RECIPE
Last week I shared with you a simple gift idea for the kids or the kids friends…a Gingerbread Play Dough Gift Kit. Such a simple gift idea that is inexpensive but a great way for kids to use their motor skills and imaginations and get them away from the electronics. Today I am sharing another version of the Play Dough Gift Kit…Candy Cane Play Dough.
You can make this and give it as a gift…or you can fill the jar with the dry ingredients to make the Playdough and let your recipients make it at home. Either way, I think it is a fun and unique gift idea for kids.
HOW TO MAKE PLAYDOUGH
To make, you will need the following ingredients:
- Flour
- Salt
- Cream of Tartar
- Water
- Vegetable Oil
- Peppermint Oil
- White Glitter
- Red Food Color
DIRECTIONS:
- Mix all ingredients together
- Stir until ball forms and no longer sticky.
- Add peppermint and glitter and knead until fully mixed.
- Separate into two balls.
- Add red food coloring into one ball and knead until fully mixed.
- Set aside and let cool.
- Place into mason jar
- Print out label and attach with glue.
- Add ribbon and cane cane to jar.
- That’s it! Now you have a fun homemade gift!

Candy Cane Play Dough
Ingredients
- 1 cup Flour
- 1/4 cup Salt
- 2 tsp. Cream of Tartar
- 1 cup Water
- 2 Tbsp. Vegetable Oil
- 6-8 drops of Peppermint Oil
- White Glitter optional
- 4-5 drops of Red Food Color
Instructions
-
Mix all the ingredients together in a medium saucepan and cook on medium heat.
-
Stir constantly until it forms a thick ball that is no longer sticky. The play dough will peel off the sides of the pan when it is all done.
-
Let dough cool to the touch and knead till soft and supple.
Recipe Notes
*To make the two different colors (white and red), I made two different batches of Play Dough. You can cut the recipe in half...or just make it twice. Does that make sense? One recipe makes about a cup of play dough...or just enough to fill a small pint size mason jar.
CHRISTMAS GIFT
The recipe is my absolute favorite and it smells so amazing with the Peppermint Oil. I also love the addition of the glitter. It glistens when you play with it! The Play Dough should last for several months if kept in a clean, air tight container.

Super cute idea!
Such a fun gift idea!

This will go great with the coloring books that my daughter is giving to her friends. Right now playdough is her all time favorite. So she will love it. So cute!
Such a cool idea! Perfect for December! Thanks for sharing!
Can you use a plastic type jar? With kids I was hesitant to use the regular glass mason jar. Any idea where to buy cute plastic type mason jars?
Thank you and love, love, love this idea!
Yes! Plastic would be great and much safer!
I have made theses twice in the last week, both times I waited for it to cool for a few hours and both times I put them on an air tight container, yet both times within 3 days it was growing mold. What am I doing wrong?
Would peppermint extract be ok to use instead?
I think the idea is wonderful, anything to inspire and exercise little imaginations.
But is it wise to make something that shouldn’t be eaten smell like a goodie that they’d love to taste? I realize it’s non-toxic, but why put temptation in front of them?
Kelley, thanks for you suggestion.
What a fun gift for kids or something fun to make with them on Christmas! I bet it smells amazing!!
Natalie- It does make the entire house smell amazing.
I can see a couple of my children trying to eat this! What a great idea for my kids to give cousins!
Kristyn- It smells so good that they may want to eat it….lol.
