DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RED VELVET AND CHOCOLATE CAKE
Sometimes there is a little confusion about what a red velvet cake is since people can taste chocolate in the red velvet cake. While red velvet cake is technically a cocoa cake, there is a key difference between standard chocolate cake and red velvet cake. Chocolate cake recipes traditionally use Dutch-processed cocoa, while red velvet cake uses unprocessed cocoa, a more acidic ingredient that produces a deeper, more intense chocolate flavor. Red velvet cake is also known for its signature bright red color, which is usually achieved by adding red food coloring to the batter.
CAN I USE CHOCOLATE CAKE MIX?
Yes! This will give the cake mix brownies a slightly different flavor…and they won’t be as rich as a red velvet cake mix will make the final brownies, but in a pinch you can swap out the red velvet cake for your favorite chocolate cake mix and add some red food coloring to give your brownies the red signature color. I would use a darker and denser chocolate cake mix if you are looking for a mix that will more closely mimic the red velvet flavor.
HOW TO STORE BROWNIES
Red Velvet Brownies are easy to store. Simply place cooled brownies in an airtight container and store for up to one week. I like to place them in the container and layer them if needed using a piece of parchment paper to separate them. If stored in the fridge they can last a little longer. You can also wrap them up in plastic wrap to store them.
CAN THEY BE FROZEN
Yes. These fudgy brownies can be frozen. They should be wrapped up tightly in plastic wrap. They can last up to three months if stored properly. To thaw, just remove them from the freezer and set them out in room temperature until they are thawed.
