This is the BEST Soft Sugar Cookie Recipe ever. They are the go-to cookie in our home when we need to make holiday cut out cookies.
SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE
Have mentioned before my LOVE for all things cookies? I have shared several cookie recipes here on The Idea Room over the years…and this is one of my favorites! They are made with sour cream. This sugar cookie recipe is the perfect cookie when you need to make cut out shapes. They don’t spread and hold their shape really well.
BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
These cookies are fun because you can add any flavor of frosting that you want. It tastes great with Chocolate frosting, Vanilla frosting or more flavored frostings like Peppermint Buttercream Frosting.
SOFT SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE
These cookies are so easy to freeze. You can make them ahead of time and freeze a large batch of them to frost for later. You can also freeze the dough. Just set it out on the counter and let it thaw before rolling it out to cut the shapes later.

I make sugar cookies all the time- I'm going to try these the next time I bake;o) They sound yummy!!!
I normally HATE sugar cookies! But I'll give these shot! (do you think it would make a difference if I used regular Crisco if I can't find butter flavored?)
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!
Oooh, thanks for posting this. I will be making them tomorrow once the kiddos get home from school!
You ROCK!
amy
I have a cookie jar to fill for a friend, and these would be great! Thanks for sharing. Jackie
I'm scared of the sour cream part! LOL! I love the sugar cookie recipe that my Memaw used to make, it has a bit of orange juice in it.
Thank you Amy for putting this up. I guess that I missed it. I am making these this week.
I made these for Halloween! Yours looked so much better than mine, but they did taste good. I actually mixed in some orange zest to half of the recipe and thought it was pretty tasty. I also found that I liked the cookies even better a day or two later. thanks for sharing!
I made these cookies on the weekend, using a leaf and a pumpkin cookie cutters, they turned out so cute! I love the recipe and will be using it at Christmas time as well. Thanks for a great recipe, it is now in my favorites!
Do you have an icing recipe that you prefer???
Yes! Yes I do. I have a buttercream recipe from Our Best Bites http://www.ourbestbites.com/2008/09/perfect-cupcake-frosting-and-filling/ and I have a frosting recipe for cakes that I really like…you can find it here http://www.theidearoom.net/2009/07/rainbow-layer-cake.html
They sound delicious and I’m definately going to try them. I’m worried about finding the perfect frosting or icing…
Is this recipe big enough for a fruit pizza on a large rectangular pan?
What icing do you use on the sour cream sugar cookies. I have searched for this recipe for years. Thank you.
How many cookies does the recipe make without doubling
This recipe looks so good so I tried to make it. After all the ingredients were in the bowl and I tried to mix it, there was too much flour. Maybe it should read 2 3/4 cups flour not 4 3/4 cups.?
Recommendations for freezing extra dough?
Place them on a silicone- or parchment-lined sheet. Freeze for an hour (or until solid) and transfer to a freezer zip-top bag. Squeeze out the air and freeze. Hope this helps.
Is the dough supposed to be stick? I found it handles better if I add an adfitional 1/2 cup flour. Dough is still slightly sticky but rolls out much easier
Cathie, yes it is fine to add flour as needed. Thanks!
Could you use butter instead of crisco?
Anne-I have not tried using Crisco with this recipe. Not sure how it would turn out.
I made this last night and they were delicious! Simple, easy, and super tasty. Satisfying and not overly filling. Loved this!
Albertina- So happy you enjoyed the recipe!
