PUMPKIN CHOCOLATE CHIP BREAD
With the kids back in school and the weather turning a little bit cooler at our house…I have been in the mood for baking some yummy goodness! My friend Stacy gave me a recipe she had that was supposed to be a Copycat Great Harvest Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread. She had tried it and really liked it, so I thought I would give it an “official” taste test of my own. I really do like to make sacrifices like that for the good of all ;)!
GREAT HARVEST PUMPKIN BREAD
I have tasted Great Harvest’s Pumpkin Bread and think it is really a pretty close comparison…but…my husband claimed that he actually liked this pumpkin bread better!! He’s a keeper that one! And the kids…well…they LOVED it!
CAN YOU FREEZE PUMPKIN BREAD?
Yes. Pumpkin chocolate chip bread freezes great in your freezer! Wrap up your bread tightly in plastic wrap and foil or seal in an air-tight freezer bag. I like to slice it into slices first if we are going to be eating it ourselves so that it is easy to quickly pull out a slice or two. You can warm it slowly by leaving it out to thaw before eating it or popping it into the microwave for 5 seconds.

CAN I SUBSTITUTE PUMPKIN PIE FILLING FOR PUMPKIN PUREE?
Pumpkin pie filling is pumpkin puree (and sometimes other gourds) flavored with spices like cinnamon, allspice, clove and ginger, and usually a sweetener. So pumpkin pie filling is super convenient when you are making a pumpkin pie.
Canned pumpkin puree is just plain pumpkin. I personally wouldn’t use pumpkin pie filling as a substitute in this particular recipe. It will change the entire flavor. I also can’t guarantee that the end result would be the same in texture and taste!
PUMPKIN BREAD ADD-INS
If you prefer different add-ins in your pumpkin bread here are some suggestions that would be super yummy in this pumpkin bread recipe:
- walnuts
- milk chocolate chips
- pecans
- white chocolate chips
- butterscotch chips
- dried cranberries
- blueberries
- chocolate chunks
- top with cream cheese frosting
GLUTEN FREE PUMPKIN BREAD

CINNAMON ROLL GLAZE ON PUMPKIN BREAD
This Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread Recipe great alone! But…I wanted to test out a Cinnamon Roll Glaze and see how that would taste drizzled over the top! Um…hello! So yummy! But I do love me some Cinnamon! The Cinnamon Glaze hardens slightly so you get a nice texture on the top and sides of the bread.
HOW TO MAKE PUMPKIN BREAD
After looking at the recipe, I immediately knew there were some changes I was going to make. First of all…the recipe called for 3 cups of sugar (for 2 loaves of pumpkin bread). Whoa! I cut out 1 cup of sugar and then made a few changes to the water amount and the spices. I am really happy with how the bread turned out and it still tastes great with a 1/3 of the sugar!
Combine all the dry ingredients and stir together in a large bowl and set aside. Mix together the wet ingredients by beating together in a large mixing bowl the eggs, butter and the sugar until they are creamy and smooth. beat in the pumpkin mixture and the rest of the wet ingredients.
Now take your flour mixture of the dry ingredients and slowly mix them into the batter. Once it is all mixed together, fold in your chocolate chips or any other add ins you are using.
We always add a few more chocolate chips that the recipe calls for…because sometimes our chocolate needs are more than what is called for! Then get ready for some pumpkin perfection!

This Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread Recipe tastes just like...if not better than Great Harvest Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread!
Ingredients
BREAD INGREDIENTS:
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups white granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cups pumpkin puree
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil or coconut oil
- 1/2 cup applesauce
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
GLAZE INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 Tbs Milk
- 1 Tbs Vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
BREAD:

Preheat oven to 350°F degrees.

Grease two bread loaf pans.

In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together and then set aside.

In a mixer cream together the pumpkin, oil, applesauce, eggs, vanilla and water.

Slowly mix in the dry ingredients while mixing continuously.

Mix in chocolate chips.

Separate batter into the greased pans.
-
Bake for 55-65 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Cool for 20 minutes in pans before turning out onto wire racks.

Serve or store in airtight container.
GLAZE:
-
Mix together well so that it is smooth and creamy with no lumps.

Drizzle over the bread.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 1 week in the refrigerator.

The bread turned out really delicious. Was wondering if I can turn some of the bread into biscotti. Pumpkin biscotti in the fall along with coffee. Yummy!

Have you ever tried this recipe with coconut or almond flour? I try to limit the amount of wheat flour I eat, but would love to try this recipe.

What oil did you use in this recipe? And does the applesauce have to be unsweetened?
Just an edit. 2 out of 3 cups of sugar is 2/3 the sugar not 1/3. Pumpkin chocolate chip bread signs delicious though.
