*This post is in collaboration with HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams. I am honored to be working with a company that I truly love!
My 13 year old daughter recently took matters into her own hands and rearranged her room. She took down the decor that had been in her room since she was a toddler. She was tired of having a room that looked like a kid’s room and she was tired of waiting for me to update it. She climbed into our attic to find some unused home décor that I had stored up there and decorated her room by herself. So when I had the opportunity to work with HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams, I knew it was the perfect time to finally give her a more grown up bedroom that both of us loved. Today we are sharing our girls bedroom renovation!
She wanted a brighter and fresher room design with a lot of white. She also wanted an all-white bedspread…which made me a little sad to pack away her sweet toddler bedding (sniff)! I wanted to take down the paneling on her south wall since I felt like it was kind of awkward and out of place. She also needed a new dresser. The dresser she had been using was one we had picked up from Goodwill for $10 years ago. It was falling apart.
We updated the window casings and door casings with a simpler Farmhouse style casing that we had done in other areas in our home.
We carefully removed the crown moldings so that we could put them back up on the walls when we were finished.
We then added taller baseboards to replace the short ones that were original with the home.
We pored over so many amazing paint colors options and finally settled on painting the room with HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams INFINITY® Interior Paint & Primer in Sea Salt (HGSW3287) in a satin finish. We found INFINITY paint goes on so smoothly and has excellent coverage. I have painted for years (I grew up painting my Dad’s apartments every Saturday since I was 4), and I love how easily this paint goes on the wall. Since INFINITY is a one coat product, we only had to paint one coat on this wall to completely cover up the old yellow paint that was underneath the paneled wall.
We wanted to paint all the trim, crown moldings, baseboards and casings in a lighter color that complemented the sea salt wall color.
To help us in the color pairing process, we utilized the HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Color Collections which has 16 designer-inspired Color Collections, each with 20 paint colors that work together in any combination. Since Sea Salt is part of the Coastal Cool Color Collection, so we decided to select another color from that Collection and went with Eider White (HGSW4024) in a semi-gloss finish for the trim, window casings and baseboards and in a satin finish for the shiplap wall. Eider White is a smooth and creamy white with a slight gray tint. I LOVE it! It is so soothing and clean looking without being too bright!
To make it a little easier on ourselves, we painted the baseboards and crown moldings outside while they were off the wall. Then after we nailed them onto the wall, puttied and sanded the nail holes, we were able to run the paint brush over the nail holes in an easy pass of the paint brush without having to do all the detail work again!
We put up one wall of shiplap to create a nice accent wall in her room.
We painted it in Eider White (HGSW4024) as well, but in a satin finish (again, with just one coat using HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams INFINITY Interior Paint + Primer). It covers so well and I am so happy with how it turned out!
For the shiplap wall, we had to use a small craft paint brush to paint in the cracks of the shiplap first. Then we took a small smooth roller and rolled the rest of the paint on the wall.
We finished off the shiplap wall by caulking along both ends of the shiplap where it meets up with the adjoining walls before we painted the walls.
I love how it turned out! The colors are perfect and the room feels so much cleaner and brighter! I can’t wait to get the curtains hung and some decor up on the walls!
I love how paint can instantly change the feeling in a room! It is such an easy and inexpensive way to completely change up a room and give it an instant face-lift! Be sure to check out HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams and all their amazing paint color options available at Lowe’s!
Now I just need to figure out what to do with this awkward space behind her door. There isn’t room to put anything here because the door opens into the space.
Do you have any ideas that would work for this space? I would love to hear what you would do here!

Looks nice. How about hanging a floor length mirror behind the door?

Thanks Sharon! That is a great idea!
I think I’d paint the doors. I currently am facing the same situation in my bedroom and thing the dark wood really cuts up the space and makes it feel smaller. I rent, but have got clearance from my landlord to paint away, and just can’t wait to get both the sliding closet doors and entry door painted. Best of luck with what will be the fun part!
Thanks Teddee! I agree! Just need to get the husband on board :) Have fun with your project!
You could do a picture (photograph) collage behind the door. And, I would paint the closet doors. I love the paint colors – the room looks great.
Thanks Allison! We talked about painting the doors white, but my husband is very against it :). We will see. I agree that painting them would unify the room more…but he doesn’t love the idea! ;)
Or a chalkboard
Good idea!! She would like that!
I would put a large mirror behind her door – if she doesn’t now, she will soon want one!
We talked about that! She would love one!
P.s. the room is lovely – your daughter must be thrilled!
Thank you so much Terri! She does love it…It’s hard to get her out of it now :)
When I was a teenager I had sliding mirror closet doors. I would just sit in front of it to get ready. It was nice when you have to share a bathroom with lots of siblings. Plus it made my tiny bedroom seem way bigger. I vote mirror!
That is a good idea! And it would make it look bigger! It is pretty small!
A wall mounted full length mirror, would be great behind the door.
I think so too!
My teen loves her corkboard with notes from friends, pix with family, badges from cross country, etc. That space behind the door would be a great spot!
Oh! Good Idea!!
I love how it turned out. Very relaxing and spa like. I want to incorporate shiplap in my home. Wondering how hard it was to diy. Maybe you will do a post on it.
I am planning on doing a post on the Shiplap! Thank you for the kind comment!
I think either a really fun (maybe fabric covered) bulletin board (or two) where she can put pictures in one and another be an “inspiration board”?! Or a fun creative old ladder hung in the wall. A throw blanket on one rung. Use burlap string and tiny clothes pins for pictures, cards, drawings, art, etc…
Those are some great ideas! I didn’t think about a ladder! That’s a fun one too! Thanks!
My daughter has a similar door situation in her room… we bought a metal mini shelf with hooks coming down and she has her nail polish and sunglasses on her shelf and the hooks are great for all her scarves and belts….. she has mirrored closet doors which is really nice… but i love the wood and would have a hard time painting too!
another thing we picked up at target to put in her room was a large tree decal with hearts for leaves… it goes from floor almost to ceiling and she put it up herself and loves it! she has added framed pics of friends and an owl plaque to her “tree”… it really gave it her own personality and is still stylish and cute –because really, when you buy it at target how could it not be!
I would put a full length mirror on the back of the door itself. Behind the door, a combination magnetic board-chalkboard-bulletin board. I would probably not do mirrored closet doors…I think it would take some of the charm away from the room.
Cheryl- Great ideas! Thanks so much!
That looks great! Maybe hang a big macrame piece behind the door! (Guess what my current craft fad is, haha!) If you could get something in a light/natural wood in the room or a “nature art” piece with sandy browns in it you could tie the carpet in too, rather than just ignoring it. That way it’s not featured, but it is acknowledged and becomes invisible. 😁
Nice job!
Becky- Great ideas. Thank you.
