Have you ever tried a pumpkin butter? If you love fall and all things pumpkin, this butter spread is so delicious on your favorite toasted bread or english muffins. I have also spread a dollop or two of the butter on pancakes and my favorite waffles!
Fresh pumpkin butter is so easy to make and can also make a fun and festive gift idea for anyone who loves pumpkin spice and the fall season. I have also shared a delicious Whipped Pumpkin Butter that is equally tasty.
WHAT IS PUMPKIN BUTTER?
Pumpkin Butter is a sweet and creamy spreadable mixture of pumpkin puree loaded with seasonal spices. Cooking the pumpkin butter on a low heat all day caramelizes the sugars to give the spreadable pumpkin butter a rich and delicious texture and flavor.
There is actually no butter in pumpkin butter. So it is dairy free, vegan and gluten-free.
WHAT CAN I USE PUMPKIN BUTTER WITH?
Use your pumpkin butter just like you would a nut butter or an apple butter. Here are some of the most popular ways I have seen it used, or have used it with my family:
- spread on toast (my favorite wheat bread)
- spread on cinnamon raisin bread (my favorite way to eat it!)
- mixed into yogurt
- German pancakes
- spread on French toast
- spread onto pancakes
- waffles
- mixed into oatmeal
- spread with cream cheese on your favorite bagel
- on zucchini bread
HOW LONG DOES PUMPKIN BUTTER LAST?
You can store pumpkin butter in your fridge up to 3 weeks. If you freeze it in an air-tight container, it can last up to 6 months. To use it after it has been in the freezer, you can let it thaw on the counter for a couple hours and then be sure to move it into the fridge to keep it fresh.
SHOULD I USE CANNED PUMPKIN PUREE OR FRESH PUMPKIN PUREE?
You can actually use either in this recipe! Either one works great. I personally think the fresh pumpkin puree made from sugar pumpkins is a little tastier…but the convenience of canned pumpkin can’t be overlooked sometimes. I have used both and you can’t go wrong with either. They both turn out delicious!
SLOW COOKER PUMPKIN BUTTER
This recipe literally takes minutes to throw into your slow cooker. As it cooks for a few hours you get to enjoy the amazing smell of it simmering. Your whole house will smell amazing…and when you show up to a gathering of friends, later in the day, they will want to know why you smell so good!
CAN I ALSO MAKE PUMPKIN BUTTER ON THE STOVE?
Yes! I love how convenient it can be to throw everything into the crock pot and let it simmer for a few hours on low…plus the whole house smells like pumpkin pie spice for days! But if you need it quickly and enjoy cooking over the stovetop, you can have it made in under 30 minutes. Just simmer all the ingredients on a low heat for 20 minutes until the mixture has thickened, turned darker in color and has a shiny appearance. Be careful not to have your heat too high or you can scorch it easily.

About 2-3 weeks in a proper air-tight container!
Any preference on using honey or maple syrup? Or possibly half of both?
I think either one would be fine! I am not a big fan of maple syrup so I wouldn’t choose that. But either one would work great!
How long does it keep in the refrigerator? And does this recipe double well? (I am thinking of making it as part of a Christmas package for my kiddo’s teachers this year.)
It should double and cook just fine! I would keep it 2-3 weeks refrigerated in an air-tight container!
